In Loving Memory of Dr. Wanda Hannon
June 13, 1952 – September 27, 2023
On the evening of Wednesday, September 27, 2023, Dr. Wanda Hannon passed away peacefully at UAB Hospital after her bout with pneumonia at the age of 71. She was the life of the party, known for her contagious laughter and a heart as warm as a cozy fire.
Wanda, a Mobile, Alabama native attended Vigor High, where she proudly embraced her "wolf" spirit and forged lifelong friendships with her knack for humor.
Her nursing career saw her don many hats, from LPN to RN, a Clinical Nurse Specialist, and finally, a PhD. In 1989, she started as a visiting school nurse and retired in 2016 as Supervisor of Health and Social Services for the Mobile County School System.
When not patching up patients, Wanda was a multi-talented artist, balancing clowning, sewing, painting, stained glass crafts, and cake decorating. She also adored the beach, where she'd soak up the sun and the sound of the waves with the same joy she brought to everything she did.
Wanda was "Nana" to five cherished grandchildren, and "Nana Wanda" to many others. She loved spending time with them, teaching them to dance, do crafts, and playing games that often ended with uproarious laughter.
Wanda was preceded in death by her husband William “Bill” Sundie, her parents Buford “B.J.” and Marian Pate, her sister Alice George, and former husband James Hannon. She is survived by her three children (Patrick (Moni), Benjamin, Michael (Stacey), three brothers (James Pate, Rodney Pate, Jody Pate (Stephanie)), two sisters (Diane Cochran (Danny), Paula Pate), her grandchildren (Tessa, Salome, Avery, William, and Ella), very close friends (Suzanne, Sam Houston and family, and Diana Collins), and a patchwork of friends and family who were woven together by her humor and love.
Rest in peace, Dr. Wanda Hannon. Your legacy of love, laughter, and unbridled enthusiasm will forever echo in our hearts.
Services will be held on November 11, 2023, at St. Vincent de Paul Parish Hall in Tillman’s Corner at 11 am.
The family is gracious to UAB Hospital, doctors, nurses, and all other staff who provided outstanding care and compassion.

It's our Christmas party at work today and I'm thinking about you. I will never forget the impact you had on my life, how you changed the direction of a recently divorce mom of three who had not worked really worked in 10 years. You were the best boss but more than that an amazing mentor and friend. I am forever grateful for God sending you into my life. I will forever tell whoever will listen about the mark you left on my life. I will miss you until I see you again.
