December 22, 2016

Bros. and Sisters, Badge # 4352 Wilfred Sampson of the Guyana Police force is now dimmed at age 103+.

He was an exemplary policeman , to whom the oath he took was paramount to anything else and that is the legacy he has left behind .

It is magnified in his children, grandchildren great grandchildren, his olleagues, friends and those who had the "experience", of being in his company or has crossed his path.

To those in the fraternity, you would understand the words "OLD POLICE" and the integrity and dedication to duty that they envisages. That was the life and the man--------- ------Wilfred Sampson

Wilfred Eustus Theopholous Sampson

December 22, 2016

Wilfred Eustus Theopholous Sampson was born on May 27, 1913 in Guyana.

At the age of 22, he joined the Guyana Police Force and was given the regulation number 4352. He worked not only as a police officer but was also trained as a fireman at the same time until he was recognized for his stellar work and chosen to join the special duty personnel wearing plain clothes in the Criminal Investigation Department. Throughout his time with the Guyana Police Force, he worked tirelessly to make ends meet as a father and husband whether raising and selling chickens repairing shoes or anything else.

When the police federation was formed as a way to represent police officers, who at the time has no formal representation and no place to voice their concerns, Mr Sampson was chosen as secretary of that organization. He worked side by side with persons such as Felix Austin the first Commissioner of Police to take over the Guyana Police Force from the British, and Carl Austin the second Commissioner of Police who came upfrom the ranks to the position of commissioner. All of the commissioners respected Mr. Sampson, for his professionalism and dedication.

In that era, police officers were not allowed to unionize. However, they were allowed to bring a "defaulter's friend" when they needed to be represented at any disciplinary hearing. Mr Sampson was the most popular representative. Passionate about fairness in the workplace, he became widely known as the "defaulters friend" even though he did not know some of whom he represented. He was seen as a true and honest person who stood up for justice in the colonal era.Mr. Sampson was not only a fighter figuratively but  literally as well. As an amatuer boxer representing the Guyana Police Force, he won the Welterweight Chamionship fight and received a silver cup. To this day he is often called "Champ."

Mr. Sampson married the late Eileen Harding in 1942 and was married for 51 years. He was the proud father of nine children, 24 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Sampson was a veteran of World War II. During his tour of dfuty, he was on a ship that was torpedoed. He was rescued and taken to Trinidad and Tobago. He answered the highest calling of citizenship, and over the years continued to inspire us all with the generosity of his service and the depth of his patriotism. We commend him for his selfness service and sacrifices as a veteran.

Today, it is only fitting that we celebratethe life of Mr Wilfred Sampson for he has truly distinguished himself, not only by his accomplishments and length of his great life, but also the impact he has had on the lives of so many.

It is fitting therefore, that we honor his contributions for he has enriched us all with his presence and has earned the esteem of us all.
