This memorial website was created in memory of William Arthur "Aka" Hodgins, 79, of Kīpū, Molokaʻi, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, in Kaunakakai, Hawaiʻi. Aka was born on September 18, 1941, to William Porter Hodgins and Wilda Alquist Hodgins in Lānaʻi City, HI. He grew up in East Oʻahu, in Niu Valley and Koko Head. Aka attended Punahou School where he was a member of the swim team, cross-country and track team, and graduated with the class of 1959. He attended Montana State College, where he studied Agriculture Production. After college, Aka served in the United States Coast Guard before moving to Molokaʻi to take on the position of Molokaʻi Ranch Manager for 23 years. During his time as Ranch Manager, Aka helped establish the Wildlife Park as an environmental project covering 1,000 acres suitable for African and Asian game animals that thrived on the West End of Molokaʻi. He created Molokaʻi’s kiawe charcoal and raised honeybees for the coveted Molokaʻi honey. In 1986, Aka began Noio Fishing and Trading Co., and a freight forwarding business on Molokaʻi. Aka loved the outdoors and spent most of his free time hunting and fishing. This love connected Aka to friends around the world and adventures in faraway places like Australia and Brazil.  His passion of fishing would find Aka competing in numerous fishing tournaments in the islands, from catching big game fish at the Kona HIBT and Lahaina Jackpot tournaments to trolling for pāpio on the island he loved, Molokaʻi. He was well known as a brilliant storyteller, and famous for his classic jokes and punchlines. He will be missed by all.

I worked for 7 summers at Molokai Ranch during my high school and college years. My Uncle David Rawlins helped get me a job on the Ranch that first summer after my Freshman year in high school. Me, Joey Joao and Guy Joao worked poisoning Kiawe trees at Punako iloli down Palaau. Aka let me work summers through high school. After graduating from high school, on the first day of summer work, after giving out work assignments for the day, Aka calls me over. He asks me what my plans were and I told him I planned to go to College. He smile, said good idea, then told me that as long as I was going to College, I had a job each summer on the Ranch. That was a tremendous help. College was somewhat affordable back then. With grants from my College, Kamehameha Schools and the Federal Government, my college tuition was about three quarters paid for. With the Ranch summer job and my College work study I was able to cover my tuition so that my Mom did not have to pay anything for me. Getting that College degree changed my life. I will forever be grateful to Aka and the Ranch. Aka was a good man, gruff, but don't let the exterior fool you. He loved the Ranch, he took good care of his workers, really cared about them, and threw the best June 11 party at Kaupoa house for the all the employees and family. Aloha Aka and Mahalo Nui!!!

Thank you for allowing my dad, Henry Borden, to work under your management at Molokai Ranch. He always spoke highly of you and was very grateful. Your kindness and trust, gave him the opportunity to become one of those great mechanics and handy person to operate those heavy equipment. As my dad called you, "Aka Hodgins". God Bless and may you Rest In Peace.
