He is survived by his wife, Betty Lyons Shirley, a daughter, Carol Shirley (Rusty) Ross of Thomasville, Ga. Two sons: Jack William (Allyson) Shirley of  Destin,Fl. Sean William Shirley of Vestavia Hills, Al and two step-children : Chris (Wanda) Oliver of Valley, Al and Cathy (Russell) Henry of Fredonia, Al. Grandchildren : Benjamin (Candice) Cooper, Andrea (Chris) Torres, Jacob Cooper,Zachery Shirley, Daniel Shirley, Hannah Shirley, Carter Shirley and three step-grandchildren:Raven (Watson) Nichols, Randalyn Henry, Cassie (Jeremy) Gordon. Seven great grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Shirley was predeceased by his wife, June Phillips Shirley. Dr. Shirley was born in Chattanooga, TN.

He graduated from the University of Tennessee of Dentistry in 1954 and practiced in the Valley area for 36 years. He was an active member of the Lanett First United Methodist Church , a member of the Methodist Men's Club, a past member of the board, served in several positions in the church, sang in the choir for many years and very active in the Emmaus Community. He was past president of the Valley Sportsman Club, Co- founder of "Sheltering a Vision" and worked on several Habitat for Humanity houses. He was a recipient of the Hannah Evangelistic Award. He was co-founder of Springwood School and was on the first Board of Directors. He served on 19 medical mission trips to foreign countries. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the Navy.
