His Life
December 22, 2022
William was born in Vallance Rd, Bethnal Green, London on 24 may 1922 to Rosa Jane and William Henry Squires.
Following the death of his parents, he lived at a Roman Catholic children’s society orphanage ‘St Mary’s for boys’ in North Hyde, Middlesex.
At the latter part of WW2, William was called up to serve in the British army…travelling to South Africa, Rangoon in India and finally on to Burma. It was beyond gruelling to fight in the jungle but our soldiers had the Gurkhas fighting alongside them, who knew the terrain well.
After the war,William, who loved dancing to the Big bands, met Ivy who he married in 1951 at St Faiths church, West Hill, Wandsworth, London.
Ivy & Bill lived at the elephant & castle and later Kennington, London…they had 3 children & a cat called Smokey.
Following their retirement from the Civil service, they moved to Epsom, Surrey and eventually to Cheam.
william passed away in 2011 at 89 years of age and Ivy passed away in 2020 at the age of 93 years.
They are buried together at Sutton cemetery, Surrey.
