His Life
January 15, 2012

Bill was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 4, 1928 to Walter and Cora Holst, and passed away in Bakersfield, California on January 14, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne. Also surviving are siblings, Dorothy, Walter, and Nancy, and their spouses; children, Walter, Richard, and Laura; step children, Karen, Michael, Kristina, and Robert; and many precious grandchildren. Bill's early adult life was spent as a seaman, which enabled him to travel the world and experience many adventures. He served in the US Army during the Korean conflict, and was stationed in England. Bill spent the last 30 years of his working life as an industrial photographer in the micro electronics industry. He was a talented photographer, and was especially skilled at portrait photography. After retirement, Bill enjoyed exploring thrift stores and collecting old photo equipment and German beer glasses. During the last few years of his life, Bill enjoyed researching his family history, and was able to gather quite a bit of information. Over the last seven years, Bill enjoyed the companionship of his three little dogs, who frequently accompanied him on outings. One of the major highlights of Bill's life was a six week European tour in 1985 with his son, Wally, and his sister, Nancy, traveling in his new Volkswagon van, which he picked up in Germany. Bill loved to travel, and together with Jeanne traveled throughout the US, and was able to visit Ireland in 2001, and Mexico in 2003 before his health started to decline. Bill accepted his declining health gracefully, never complaining, always hopeful he would improve.  He was comforted and encouraged by frequent calls and visits from family members, who were a great support during his last days. Thanks to the care provided by hospice, Bill's last few days were peaceful and comfortable. Many thanks to the caring staff of Mercy Memorial Home Health & Hospice, Mercy Southwest Hospital, Candice Home Care, GEMCare, Dr. Farrer, Hall's Ambulance, and Kern River Family Mortuary.
