Mr. Langley is survived by his wife of 75 years, Mrs. Nina Still Langley, his three daughters, Sharon Langley Tankersley, Victoria Langley Ford (Mike Ford), and Janet Langley Eason (Bruce Eason), and his sister, Imogene Langley Nichols. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Ginny Tankersley Thibodeau (David Thibodeau), William Curtis Ford, Christian Ford-Cannon (Stephen Cannon), William Joseph Tankersley, Lacy Eason Gullage (Jared Gullage), Amanda Tankersley Joiner (Brian Joiner), and Andrew Bruce Eason (Jenna Eason). Mr. Langley has ten great grandchildren: Benjamin Ford, Matthew Ford, Elizabeth Thibodeau, Joseph Thibodeau, William Tankersley, Ethan Tankersley, Patrick Joiner, Tucker Eason, Julianna Gullage, and Naomi Gullage. In addition, Mr. Langley is survived by many nephews and nieces.

 

Mr. Langley, born in Camp Hill, Tallapoosa County, AL on August 16, 1921, was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Hamner Langley and Flora Henderson Langley, his twin sisters, Lera Langley Hood and Vera Langley Bishop, his son-in-law, Joseph J. Tankersley, step grandson, Joseph J. Tankersley, Jr., and his great granddaughter, Lily Marie Gullage.


As a boy his family moved a lot throughout Alabama and Georgia. After marrying in 1941, Mr. and Mrs. Langley lived in Langdale, AL where he worked for his father in the carpentry business and later worked at Langdale Mill.


Mr. Langley (PFC) joined the U.S. Army in 1944 and served with distinction in Company F, 184th Infantry Regiment, 7th Division. He was a veteran of World War II, where he was deployed as a Rifle Marksman to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, and was awarded the Purple Heart after the Okinawa Campaign. For his outstanding service, he was awarded the Bronze Star. After his discharge he returned to Langdale, AL.


He attended school where he studied the Carpentry and Electrical trades. He and his small family moved to the Still’s family farm in LaFayette, AL in 1950, where he farmed and worked with Mr. Zeddie Allen and his sons as a carpenter. Mr. Langley started his own General Contracting business in 1968 until his “retirement”. He and his best buddies, Ralph Henderson and Nelton Gregory, bought a pulpwood truck, “Big Red”, and cut pulpwood just for the fun of it.


Mr. Langley was a member at Center Baptist Church in LaFayette, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School Director, Training Union Director, and Royal Ambassadors Leader. He also served on the Pulpit Committee and Cemetery Committee. He received a Leadership Award from the East Liberty Baptist Association.


He often freely gave of his time and resources such as when he built the facilities at Maranook Camp (formerly Maranatha), and has been credited as a mentor and great influence to young men throughout East Alabama. He spent his last years devoted to taking care of his sweetheart, Nina.


Mr. Langley’s personal interests included geography, fishing, map reading, genealogy, and Braves baseball.


Mr. Langley was a recipient of the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service Recognition Award, was a member of the American Legion, Post 141, LaFayette, and an Honorary Board Member for the Chambers County Museum.
