William "Bill" Knight of Alexandria, VA, died on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 following a stroke. He was surrounded by his loved ones. 


Bill was enjoying retirement after a long and successful career in IT and software sales. He started off in sales for Xerox, moved to Digital Corporation, and finished his professional journey as a director and then Vice President of Sales at Datatel. 


He and his wife Julie loved to travel around the East Coast to birdwatch and visit friends. Not one for sitting around, Bill was always active—when he was home, he loved to work in the yard, fish, golf with friends and family, volunteer with the Seaport Foundation and Mount Vernon, and play with his two grandchildren. He was a talented photographer, getting into the hobby when he was young and returning to it more in later years. He also loved cars and had a number of Corvettes throughout his lifetime. Bill made a mean Bloody Mary, his son’s favorite, and a great cheeseburger, his daughter’s favorite. The only time he would sit still was to have a glass of bourbon on the deck with Julie and enjoy their beautiful yard. He was a loyal friend and brother, dedicated father and grandfather, and loving husband. 


Bill is survived by his wife of 44 years, Julie Knight, and his two loving children, Joe and Beth, their respective spouses Kenna Costello and Ryan Girard, his grandchildren, Winnie and Teddy, as well as his brother, Robin Knight.


In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Seaport Foundation or Bush Hill Presbyterian Church.

Bill was my manger at Datatel and really one of the finest men I know. I'm so sad to be hearing about his death a year after his passing. Funny story: Upon learning his middle name began with "R", I asked if it was for "Robert". He said "Yes" and I responded back "So, you are a Billy Bob!!" He said with a big grin "Shut up Dave". 

I often tell younger people that the only relationship at work that really matters is your direct supervisor. I was blessed to have Bill.

Bill was a wonderful, dedicated volunteer at the Seaport Foundation who impacted the lives of many young people seeking direction. He will be deeply missed by us all.
