Over the years

February 14, 2016

I met Mrs. High in 1979 (my freshman year at A&T). She was from Windsor and I was from Edenton, only the bridge separated our hometown.  We were in frequent contact since 1979.  We (Donald and I) were there when she moved from Julian Street to the apartment. We help to host the Pinochle parties. She and Major Jr. attended my wedding in 1987.  My two daughters grew to expect a card (always Hallmark with gold seal) for birthdays every years. We become closer during the sickness of her Aunt Katie. I tried to be an encouragement during her many trips to South Carolina. And she was equally supportive to me during my mother's passing years later. I truly missed our Saturday nights.  When my home phone would ring around 8 pm Saturday, I knew it was Mrs. High calling.  We kept in contact for over 36 years and truly valued her friendship. Renee and Major Jr thanks for sharing your jewel of a mother with me and my family. I could call her anytime my daughters had math problems that we could not figure out.She would say let me write it down and I will call you back. She always did.  Both are  in college now, but I grateful to have had her as a mentor in my life. She ran a great race on this earth and now she is worthy of her reward in heaven.  I love Willie Carter High.

My loyal and dear friend

Windsor, North Carolina is our home, Willie lived in the Cedar Landing area and I lived in Saint  Francis.A little distance apart, but we always found ways to spend time  together. Our friendship started at a very early age, and very fottunately
it never ended.
We attended Mary Potter Academy in Oxford N.C.,and of course we were room mates.  That was fun because it gave us the opportunity to do lots of things together, such as going to dinning hall, doing assignments, playing games and just enjoying life.
After graduation, we went to different colleges.but our friendship remained stronng.  We had the kind of friendship that most people dream of.  Loyualty to each other.
We all have our personal and special memories of the mark that Willie left in our hearts,as she  displayed love to all.She was always the person that would go beyond the call of duty to be of service to others.
We ennjoyed talking about the experiences of  our children, grandchildren, marriages, graduations etc. I will always reflect on the past with these precious memories that we shared.
Willie had a remarkable sense of humor , and quick weit which I found refreshing and funny.
Most importantly Willie was my friend.
She was a source of inspiration and encouragement.
Had a  caring spirit and showed genuine concern and love for others.
A friend, a true friend, my confidant, a precious jewel, a joy in my life.
A christian woman of faith and displayed this in her daily living.
I will forever cling to the memories, and reflect on the past with joy, as she brought joy to my life.

Major Jr., Renee, Tim, Brian, and Tyus  You were the JOY of her life and her memories are precious. Keep  her memories alive.

Memories are the treasures that we lock deep within the storehouse of our souls.

I met Willie in 1949 when we were juniors at NCCU.  I knew her as a friendly person on campus, but it was after our 45th anniversary that I REALLY got to know her.  For the past 15 years we have met each fall and our relationships have become stronger each year.  Willie was such an important part of keeping this going and helping to strengthen it.  For these 15 years, I have looked forward to picking up the phone and hearing "Hi Bessie.  This is Willie Carter".  Then we would share stories, laugh, catch up on each other's families and just have fun.  Willie has been so supportive throughout these years.  She and my older brother knew each other through Mary Potter reunions and she never failed to ask about him and during his last years, she would go and visit him in Durham, send cards to him (she was a card sender for all occasions) and follow his progress.  Leading up to our NCCU reunions, she, Louise and I would have lots of fun planning each day and night and sharing memories.  I feel so blessed to have had this close relationship late in life.  "Willie Carter" will always be in my heart.  I miss you Willie.
 Your friend, Bessie

Why a Math Major?

January 14, 2016

Shortly after I retired, in 2015 I spent a lot of time with Mom, learning more about her life experiences, her desires and dreams, her disappointments, her likes, and definately her dislikes.  I cherish those time because I learned certain facts about my Mom that she had never shared with me before.  For instance, I asked her why she decided to change her major in college from biology to mathematics.  I expected to hear an explanation that involved career aspirations or a great love for the theory of mathematics.  Instead I was given an answer that if I had given her the same explanation when I was in college, she would have found it unacceptable.  Then she would have spent the next 10 minutes reminding me that I was there to learn and how much it was costing her for me to learn. Anyway, she told me that she changed her major to mathematics because she wanted to be outside talking with her friends rather than stuck in a biology lab! Made perfect sense to me...
