OBITUARY
Woodrow "Woody" Cook Jr. was born on June 12th ,1950 to the late Woodrow Cook Sr. and Eloise Maye Cook in Meridian, MS. He was the first of three children and often followed his mom around the countryside as she spread the gospel of Christ as a Bible Worker. He was baptized at age 12 by Elder Williams at the Ephesus SDA Church, Meridian, MS. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Allen and Luella Mamie Matthews Maye.

Although he never saw a Friday night football game, he played trombone all throughout his years at Harris and Meridian High Schools. By the time the class of 1969 graduated, Woody had already developed a love of computers and followed his dream to Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated with an Associates in Computer Science from Herzing Institute in 1972.

The new graduate needed shoes for the ceremony and stopped in Pizitz department store where he met a young, beautiful Mattie Smith-- that day he found the perfect shoes AND the perfect help mate. Mattie and Woody were in love, inseparable and soon married in February 1973. He worked as a janitor at the building where he would eventually be hired in order to support his growing family as first Danica and then Dayna were born.

Woody worked for UAB for 36 years. When he began his career in 1973, he was a key punch operator and as technology changed, he was promoted to Information Systems Specialist II. He loved UAB from medicine to sports to academics -- he missed nothing including Danica and Dayna's grades on the mainframe. After retiring from the IT department in August 2010, he pursued other passions.

Woody's interest led to Woody's Photography and Video Service and a position of House Manager at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. Not confining his talents there, he also acted in several local plays and theater productions. He sang bass for numerous quartets and choirs throughout Meridian and Birmingham area including the Ephesus Young Inspirations in the seventies, the King's Men, and the Evelyn S. Hardy Men of Distinction Chorus of 6th Avenue Baptist Church. He enjoyed singing for over 50 years with Bro. Perry Pride.

Every Sabbath you could find him in the sound booth at Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church with his right hand A/V man Wendell Timothy. He loved the Lord and had a huge heart for service. He was incredibly self-sacrificing and always willing to help his church as a deacon, minister of music and architect of the audio visual ministry at Ephesus taking them from cassette tapes to live streams.

Daddy will be missed for his Friday night meal of brown rice, broccoli, and vegetarian Swiss Steak meals. Poppi will be missed by grandkids-- the quality time that he spent with them at home, at birthday parties, at school events-- the mundane and the big events. Bro. Cook will be missed for thoughtfully chosen birthday cards, visits to sick and shut in, and the chocolate covered macadamia nut candy from Hawaii during Christmas. Woody C or "Junior" will be missed for his laughter, his dancing, his way of capturing the perfect photo for family, friends, and strangers. His humor, the way he loved his wife and daughters and his teams (the Lakers, the Cowboys, the Crimson Tide and the UAB Blazers).

On July 17th, 2020, at 10:55am, Woody transitioned while helping a neighbor. He was doing something that was second nature to him -- helping others. His lasting legacy, that spirit of selfless service, his love of family and living your faith, is what we have to pass on along with the story of his beautiful life.

Together we look forward to seeing him again including his wife of 47 years Mattie Cook, his daughters Danica (Herman) Davis of Huntsville, AL and Dayna (Travis) Heard of Birmingham, AL; his brothers Bobby (Mattie) Feagin of Birmingham, AL, Lester Cook of Meridian, MS; his sister Cynthia Cook of Meridian, MS; his grandchildren Janelle, Jeremiah and James Davis, Gabrielle and Travis Andrew Heard; three brothers-in-law Columbus Smith, Charlie (Marilyn) Smith, and Donnie (Debra) Smith; six sisters-in-law Candus (Errol) Sango, Dorothee DeJesus, Ziann Goree, Patricia Smith Turner, Geraldine Smith and Patricia Dawson Smith; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mattie, Danica, and Dayna, and family

I have played trombone in the Dawson Orchestra alongside Woody for four years. During this time, I got to know, love, and enjoy being with Woody for each practice and worship service we were together. I was heartbroken to learn of his passing, and I will continue to pray for you as you mourn for his loss. I’m sorry I was not available to attend his funeral service, but I just wanted you to know that he was really a one-of-a-kind, great guy and true friend to me. I will greatly miss his presence with us in the orchestra.

Today, Friday, 7/24/2020, I am absolutely Heartbroken. For, today is the Day my favorite cousin, Woodrow Jr Cook will be laid to Rest. Your death was So sudden. None of us were ready!! I shall miss our long talks; Calling you up to keep me awake to/from work due to my insomnia; your jokes, your laughter; words of wisdom and solace... You taught me Everything I know about photo editing. As the Family Historian, you cataloged, photographed, and videotaped Family events and special occasions for posterity. You always kept me informed about what was happening in the Family. You Loved your Family!! When Auntie was diagnosed with terminal illness, you agreed to go with me to Nashville to visit and cheer her up. You Loved your Church!! Never a Day went by that you were Not doing Something- mowing the lawn, changing a light bulb in the sanctuary, surveying water damage, fixiing or setting up audio/visual equipment, delivering food... The last time we spoke, the Thursday before you passed, you were at the Church pulling cable to install new audio/visual equipment!! You were more like a Big Brother to Me, than a Cousin. I am Still trying to wrap my head around the fact that you are gone. ONLY God knows WHY things Happen as they do. I shall Miss you dearly, my cousin!! The world is a better place for You having been here!! Love you sooo... Much!! Rest in Jesus, Junior Cook. Until that Great Gettin up Mornin. When, by the grace of God, we shall see each other, again. And, there will be No more dying; No more crying; No more sickness, sadness, Nor pain!! There will only be laughter, worship, and praise in the Heavenly Kingdom, Forever!! Help us, Father God, to hold onto THAT Hope, and to remember only the good times. Comfort and Keep us, is my Prayer, in Jesus' name, Amen.

I met Woody and Lorenzo when I was in high-school dating and later engaged to their cousin Leon. Leon and I never married, but I had grown to love Mr. Thompson, Ms. Emma, and Woody. I later met beautiful and sweet Mattie when she worked at Legion Field. I grew up next door to Bill Harris & family. Music put Woody & I back in touch. The last time we talked, we discussed quarantine survival with our grand children. I gave him directions to Shades Crest Rd where you can drive up on a high mountain and can see over the west side of Birmingham. I planned to call Woody to find out if he ever drove up there. He got a better view on his way to heaven. My brother & friend, I forever Agape love & miss you. I will see you when I get there.

Like many others who have left their good wishes and condolences, I join them in disbelief that this is happening at all. Mr. Woody was such a gentleman and always had a way to make you chuckle. It chokes me up writing this knowing that he is no longer with us. Mr. Woody introduced me to new things and taught me useful skills that I probably wouldn't have learned otherwise. I remember the day he sought me out to lend a helping hand to become more actively involved in the church services at Ephesus. He would always greet my family and I with a laugh and a smile, I can hear his warm laughter now...I loved being able to converse with him on Saturday mornings, the energy he had was contagious. There will definitely be a life-size hole here on earth without him. But, I know that Mr. Woody was a believer in the Almighty God, and according to God's word, I believe that we will see him again. My condolences to his family and all who knew him. May God watch over your family and give you peace through this time of trial. Rest in God Mr.Woody till we meet again.

Resolution of Respect
For
Mr. Woodrow Cook, Jr.
No matter what your trials are, or how big your mountain seems; The Lord is there to see you through; He’ll go to all extremes. So if your cross seems hard to bear; and you know not what to do; The One who loves you most of all will be there to see you through. We are in place in this world for a limited time, and with the breath of the infant, begin the race to the grave. A race everyone must run.

WHEREAS, in the providence of God, He has brought to a close, the life our classmate, Woodrow Cook, Jr., whose loss we mourn, yet we are consoled by the words of Jesus who said, "I will never leave thee or forsake them.”

Be it resolved that the T.J. Harris/Meridian High School class of 1969 bows in humble submission to Him who never makes a mistake. We remember Woodrow Cook in love, for his friendship, bright smile and zest for life, acknowledging that in some way, he touched each of our lives.

To the family, we know your loss is deep, and your sorrow is great, but we want you to know that we share in your sorrow, but more importantly, we recognize that this loss is Heaven’s Gain. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Humbly submitted on this 24th day July, 2020

There are some people who leave a footprint On your heart and in your memories . This journey started out many years ago during a tent meeting, where your family became my family. My homey Woodrow Cook jr. better Known as junior . You are missed by so many , the small congregation at Ephesus, was our lifeline. Provided a Christian foundation , and gave us love ,and direction . Because of them we took our places in society ,hopefully one day, to sit at Jesus feet.
Your sister shared with me that you were helping a neighbor, I’m not surprised . I’m thankful that God use you as an adult because I watched him use you as a teenager. Precious, memories how they linger !
My prayers go out to your daughters. I know about dad’s girls and your grandchildren how sweet. I will continue to lift up Mattie , it’s difficult when you lose a helpmate. God’s going to give us strength and carry them though. I admire how you looked after your sister and brother.
Yes we will miss that bass voice, the trombone, the beautiful smile, and a brother who was willing to reach out to any one and offer a hand . I think about the song may the “work I’ve done speak for me”. Well it’s speaking for you ! Farewell my friend with meet in the earth made new

My heart is so full of sorrow knowing that my dear friend Woody Cook has transitioned. I met him when I met my dear friend Harrison ‘Alex’ Watkins many years ago when I had to sing at Ephesus SDA Church. A lasting and beautiful friendship was born. Of the many times I’ve sang at Ephesus, I don’t think I’ve ever sang without his being there. That’s saying a lot. He was always so helpful and encouraging, and always made the sound great and eased my fears. He was a man of many talents and didn’t mind sharing them. Alex and I even did a tape that Woody recorded of us so many years ago. He was always a blessing to me. My condolences go out to his family whom he loved so much. I know God will comfort them with His peace as He promised in His Word. Woody will definitely be missed. It’s hard to imagine a world without him and not being able to call him. ❤️

Mattie, Danica and Dayna,

I am in such disbelief about my friend Woody. Everytime he saw me, he would kid me about being the youngest of Young Inspirations. He would say "they didn't know Paula could sing" but, you showed 'em(ha, ha). You rolled out with that song "Give Me A Clean Heart". I'm truly missing him as I write this...mourning the loss of a really good friend. So sorry for your loss too Mattie, Danica and Dayna.

Wow! I am still stunned and in disbelief. I remember as a child how Woody would pick me up from my parent's home for basketball practice. He taught me to carry the bass note and make the song my own. He was just an all around great guy. My parents loved Woody C and Mattie. Just hard to believe this great friendship has ended. Mattie, Danica, Dayna and family, we are deeply sadden by Woody's death. May God strengthen you now and days to come. Praying for you all.
July 23, 2020
Mattie, Danica and Dayna: And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Rev 21:4

Tears and heartbreak are natural and spontaneous at this time, but so is remembrance.

I fondly remember Woody’s faithful and joyful consistence in making a church presentation appear flawless as he worked behind the scenes. Although the speaker held little consequence, essential was Woody’s ability to calm anxieties and make audio and visuals spoken and sung for God, effective.  REMEMBER the good, and have faith in the future when God said there shall be no more tears.

Mattie, Danica and Dayna, your husband, father and grandfather was a wonderful god-fearing man, friend and neighbor to us. We feel honored and privileged to have known him. Please accept our deepest condolences. Leo and I met Woody more than 40 years ago. We all worked at UAB. Leo and Woody became friends and we formed a bowling team. We had lots of fun and bowled in the Sunday night league. Little did we know that some 38 years later, we would move across the street from Woody and Mattie. Woody was a blessing to us and just last Thursday night he called Leo to come over. He had some some produce to give us. He had a kind christian spirit and his joy was in helping others. I enjoyed our talks about decorating and I remember how proud he was of the home that he had with Mattie. He insisted I must take a tour. I am glad I did because I met sweet Mattie. Matter of fact, God blessed Leo to speak to him on Friday morning while taking his morning walk. Leo will miss Woody and their talks. He enjoyed spending time with Woody. I will miss seeing him greet his grandchildren each morning. But most of all we will miss Woody because his friendship was as good as gold. We could depend on him. We will continue to keep you guys in our prayers. Let us know if we can help in any way!

Woody will truly be missed. His smile, laughter, jokes, and love for music is what I will miss the most. He had a way of always making you laugh no matter what the situation was. We shared the love for music and always talked about our favorite singers/soloists, choirs, quartets.

I am still trying to wrap my head around this one.

Memories cherished forever.

To his family....Hold to God's unchanging hand.

Furthermore, his gifts from the Fruit of the Spirt {Galatians} 5:22-23 were truly displayed to everyone. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.

I guess I am still in denial. Every time I think about him being gone, I tell myself no. When I wake up each morning, I look at my phone for his text to me to give him a call when I have a minute to talk. I stare at the wall from the edge of my bed and say to myself that it just can't be. We have so many more things to do. Just last week, we spent several hours pulling cables in the church. I am so thankful that we did because I got to spend more time with him doing what we both loved.
I miss him. I miss my friend. I miss Woody. He made me laugh when I was frustrated with the church. He lifted me up and made me feel good about things I was working on. He always made himself available to help me when I needed it. He also made me feel good about being a dad as he would rush to get the last word in during our early morning phone conversations because he knew I needed to make breakfast and lunch for my daughter.
I will always admire Woody for how dedicated he was to the church. No one cared about his church more than Woodrow Cook, Jr.
To his loving family, Woody loved you all very much and spoke about you often. My thoughts and prayers and love are with you. Whatever you need, just call and I will be there.

Rest well my friend. Rest well.

Woody C., a true friend. Gone to soon! I will cherish his memories! His humorous nature… always had a joke or two to keep me laughing.  Woody loved Ephesus Church and as long as I can remember he was Ephesus Audio Visual Leader. He worked hard over the past few months to ensure new screens were setup in the sanctuary & monitors would be in the offices as we begin to return to church during this pandemic. My last encounter with him was Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at Ephesus Church regarding where I wanted my monitor to be placed on the wall. I am grateful for the longtime friendship we shared. I will truly miss his presence… I will miss him impersonating our former pastors… I will miss his calls to chat, text messages and pics of work he had completed at Ephesus Academy and Ephesus Church. His life was a blessing to many, his memory a treasure to all. He will be sorely missed.  My prayer and heartfelt sympathy to his wife, daughters, grands and entire family. Take your rest my friend, MR. COOK.

Woody was a man who was ALWAYS busy and helping someone. Most of the time you could find him at the church. It was important to him that everything was in the right place for the church he loved. He was funny and always had us laughing. I will miss him and our AV/Communication texts, chats and pow wows about what we could do to improve. He was a great help to my photography team. I could always count on him to get pics for me when others weren't available. Church won't be the same without him. Rest well my friend until we meet again.

To my beloved and faithful big sister, Mattie, nieces, Danica, Dayna, all of the grands and the sons-in-law, brother and sister, Lester and Cynthia. We have lost another icon in our family. Still in great shock and grief, I write and pray that Jesus will give us His comfort to get through this great loss. The death of Woody leaves a void that will take a lot to fill. Woody was funny, helpful and all about family. He was our original brother-in-law from 47 years and our family photographer. Missed deeply, we will focus on supporting his family.  Thank you Lord for the legacy and time you gave us with Woodrow Cook, Jr.

I was in the Dawson Sanctuary Orchestra with Woody. He was so warm to all and made everyone feel like they were the most important person to him in any moment. He went out of his way - although it was his way to love everyone and to show it - to support others by attending their recitals, taking plenty of keepsake photos, and on and on. He always made me and everyone else smile. We loved him and will miss him greatly. Truly Jesus could be seen in beloved Woody.

Red Chevy

July 22, 2020
For as long as I’ve known Woodrow Cook Jr he’s been at tall friendly gentlemen with a Million dollar smile. But I guess anyone that met or knew Woody could say the same...classic Woody. But it was Woody’s car that first caught my attention. Woody came to Birmingham driving a red 1961 Chevy Impala convertible. So funny now as I think back to that time how Woody and his car seemed a perfect fit...a smooth ride for a smooth young man! I wanted to ride in his Chevy as often as I had the opportunity. Woody was always happy to oblige.  From that time to this moment we have lifelong friends. But more than that, we became brothers. I will truly miss my dear brother Woody his smile his wit his candor his faithfulness. Until I see you again old friend.

Woody the Helper

July 21, 2020
I didn’t even know who Woody was or his name when he first started helping me back in the early 2000s. I was the Librarian for Ephesus Jr Academy and Woody was well...the helper. He was always helping out at the school in some way. We mostly worked together in the area of technology and information systems. Since we didn’t have much money back then we had to improvise and be very creative. Our solutions were probably borderline illegalbut Woody would always make it do what it do. He was the best and we were so very blessed to have him at our school helping out for DECADES! He will be missed on so many levels. What a legacy he has left for his family. Never forgotten
