Chan Kwan Yeuk Laan             August 18, 1920 to May 2, 2022

My mother, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kwan Fan Fat who started as a tea merchant in China and later, a real estate magnate in Hong Kong. Her name meant “like an Orchid” as her father loved flowers and had a beautiful garden.  Growing up in a feudal society was not easy. But her parents taught her to believe in education. Mom often said to all her daughters and grandkids, “Money is never wasted on education. Education gains Knowledge AND Knowledge is Power”!

Mom studied in Ying Wa Girls’ School and in 1938, she matriculated, and she went on to major in Economics in University of Hong Kong. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942. At that time, few women went beyond high school. (From the HKU library archives, we found out that she was one of the very few women admitted)! She married my father Mr. Chan Sin Ka and they lived in China during the Japanese occupation of HK. There, in the beautiful city of Nanking, their first child, Kenny, was born. (Kenny was named after the brother she lost in the war). Returning to HK after the war, she started to teach Geography and Math in Ying Wa, and stayed there over a span of 40 plus years! During this time, Mom collected a lot of colleagues as lifelong friends and inspired a great number of students.  For a brief while, she was the vice principal to the school. She loved her job dearly as it gave her the opportunity to educate girls to believe in themselves.

Mother loved her family, and she never forgot her roots. She was grateful to her parents and to the school that opened her mind. She was very active in all the fund-raising events and donated generously to the redevelopment of the school. She had one of the 2 Vice Principal rooms named after her parents as a tribute to them and her 4 daughters had the Geography room named after her in her honour.  Sonja toiled hard in all these activities to help extend mom’s belief in Girls’ Power!! Sonja helped in the process of publishing the redevelopment album and she served on the fundraising sub-committee.

Family was always important to Mom. She kept all her 4 daughters, 9 grandkids and 8 great grandkids united in strong personal bond. This close connection was also extended to a bigger circle which includes our cousins and their children, as well as children of her best buddies! Amazing, isn’t it? Even though they are spread-out all-over HK, Australia, Europe, USA and Canada, they never failed to call her, and always sent her birthday and Christmas gifts and well wishes! Together we celebrated many happy occasions like weddings, birthdays and Chinese cultural festivities.

Mom was quite a traveller before she turned 80. She left footprints all over Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and North America. She was proud of making to the peak of the Yellow Mountain in China!

As Mom advanced into her senior years, she started to return to her love of music and dance. She enjoyed listening to oldies hours on end. Her favourite song was Que Sera Sera which highlighted her view in life. She could waltz, rhumba, cha cha and rock and roll, often taking the man’s steps to lead!! She Line danced several times a week well into her nineties and one of her dance teachers even crowned her as the Dancing Queen!! She also loved mahjong and even taught her Filipino nannies the game! She played adeptly at the Blackjack table as well!! Hard to win her money though!! She walked 1080 steps everyday until she was wheelchair bound after a mild stroke in 2018 when she was 98! With tremendous zest in life, Mom never turned down any invitation to a party. She enjoyed all social gatherings and outings with many former students and our friends! She was popular! She was busy! Above all, she was youthful!!

Mom loved to celebrate birthdays with her friends and family. It became an annual event that we looked forward to. She wanted to entertain not just her own friends and family, but the kids’ and even grandkids’ friends who have named her Wonder Woman!! She organized a fun event for everyone and enjoyed spending hours purchasing many small gifts and wrapping them up nicely as prizes for her Bingo games. Yes, Mom was the Bingo Queen! Wait, there’s the memorable Chicken Dance as well. Even her little great grandkids participated!! Mom was truly generous to share her joy and laughter and she always infatuated everyone with positive energy!

Yes, Mom used to tell me she celebrated everyday as another birthday. Yes, she was not the one to complain about aching bones, decreasing activities, and increasing reliance on helpers. She embraced life with exceptional love and enthusiasm, a true role model to us all!

It is not easy to sum up 101 years of Mother’s glorious life in a few words. It is even harder to bid her farewell. In modern terms, she was a true influencer! I hope that the fond memory of her will bring strength to all of us! Mom would say, “You only live once, make the best of it!!

Thinking of you today and many other days, Pau Pau. Every time the kids eat a salty snack or chocolates, I remember them sitting and enjoying them with you. When I see an ice cream truck, I think of you being the first in line. Every big event with a dance floor, I miss your conga lines and bingo. When the girls get excited over neat stationery and toys, I remember the souvenirs and gifts you would bring me from your travels. You are loved and we’ll always cherish your memory.

Dear Miss Kwan
Today is Christmas Day and I think about you, of the wool socks you have knitted and donated at the Ying Wa alumnae dinner in 2013 . I have written a tribute in May this year about the socks as they are close to my heart . The socks are precious to me and I had them on after the 6 hour surgery and home rest after

I am wearing them today and they will stay with me for life

Miss Kwan, you are a legend to me.
I miss your smiling face at the school alumnae

There’s not one day I do not miss you.
I treasure the opportunity that I can house your ashes and you are greatly revered by all the family and friends who came to my house, especially the great grand kids who have learnt to bow to you and paused for a moment to honour you.
In life, you showered them with love
In death, you are still teaching them to pay respect
You are forever our model and guiding light!

In Loving memory of our beloved teacher, Miss Kwan
May I epxress my condolences to the family of Miss Kwan.May she rest in peace.
Ying Wa Girls School is my beloved school from 4 years old to 17 years old when I have left the school to go overseas. I have 2 younger sisters who are
the Ying Wa Girls too.
My best memory of Miss Kwan is in 2013 at the Toronto Alumnae dinner.I was at the dinner and bought the wool socks knitted by Miss Kwan for fund raising. My surgery took place a week after the dinner. Those socks were with me the whole time I was in the hospital and when I went home after for rest. Then the last few years when I was emceeing at the EYRIE fund raising galas , Miss Kwan was at the dinner table nealy every year with her friends and family. I can never forget the great energy and the dance she did with her friends. Once,I went up to her and danced a cha cha with her and Wow, what a fantastic dancer with elegance and she was around 96 years old.
Miss Kwan, you are a legend and I am so honored to be your student.

May you rest in peace.

A life deeply intertwined with Ying Wa, Ms. Kwan entered our school in 1932 before graduating to university studies. She was the only one in her class who matriculated and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts from The University of Hong Kong in 1942.

Her love for education and Ying Wa brought her back to serve as a Geography, Mathematics and Chinese teacher in 1951. Students were enamored by her warmth and laughter. Her lessons were never boring and her interactive approach to teaching was very progressive in those days. According to one of her former students, Ms. Kwan was akin to a mother to them. Always gentle and patient, her love and care were deeply felt by those privileged to have been taught by her.

In 1977, Ms. Kwan became Vice-Principal of Ying Wa. Her joyful disposition was truly infectious and colleagues spoke glowingly of her. She was always eager to help and fostered a professional and harmonious working environment here at Ying Wa. During her time, parent awareness and involvement was something she strongly advocated for. She worked tirelessly to make a difference by empowering parents with positive strategies and practices.

While her tenure ended in 1980, what Ms. Kwan left behind was a storied and memorable legacy – one that spanned multiple decades and left a positive impact on countless Ying Wa families.

In her long years of association with Ying Wa, Ms. Kwan had touched the lives of hundreds of students. She is survived by four loving daughters, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. All four daughters attended Ying Wa from kindergarten onwards and have remained over the years loyal and staunch supporters of Ying Wa, just like their mother.

Gone but not forgotten, Ms. Kwan will forever be fondly remembered by all at Ying Wa. May she now rest in peace.

‘Miss Kwan’ - 1954

Nobody cares for us the same
She’s the woman that I can count on
She’s my mother, my teacher, my friend.”

Grandmother's Red

"Wear red for pau pau's birthday," my mom had been saying every year since I could remember.

Red was more than a lucky color. It was grandmother's favorite. It was as bold as the 12-table parties she threw for the family on her birthdays, occasions that we looked forward to every year -- and gossiped about in between. It was the ruddy color of everyone's faces after enough drink. It symbolized for everyone my grandmother's generosity and the joy of our group celebration.

I'll also remember the green of pau pau's mahjong tiles, which were inevitably accompanied by the clacking sounds of her playing the 18 rounds with her many friends.

I think of grandmother and lavender, which she used to buy for me when she knew that I had trouble sleeping. She bought light purple essential oils and packets of dry flowers, which she lovingly pressed into my hands each time I saw her in Canada or when she flew to Hong Kong.

I also remember grandmother as gold -- the regal color of her necklace. Or the miniature spoon collection shat she gathered from her many travels around the world.

The memories of my grandmother will always be colored in Red. It was the color of the lai see she gave to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As well as the stacks of birthday and greeting cards she received every year from her students and family. Red was her smiling lips as she danced her favorite cha cha. For everyone that knew her, Grandma simply exuded the brightness and essence of vibrant crimson red.

I remember on a snowy day I gave Auntie Chan a ride to the nearby community centre where she practiced line dance regularly. I parked the car and walked her to the door of the classroom. When her classmates saw her, they immediately stopped talking and rushed towards her, greeting her while holding her hands, leading her to the bench and helping her change her snow boots. Auntie Chan, with her energy, her kindness, her willingness to help others, her humour and her wonderful smile, she will always be loved, respected and well liked by all kinds of people wherever they are.
Auntie Chan loved the game of Bingo and had hosted the game in the Chinese Canadian professional Xmas parties for many years. She was young at heart even at her 90's. I had invited her to a few of my singing and dancing parties. She was an active dancer there, more active than most of us.
Auntie, we will all miss you !

Saying goodbye is not easy, especially when it comes to Auntie. Auntie was an amazing lady, always fun to be around whether she was a dancing or bingo queen, and she did it all while looking so graceful and beautiful. Some of the biggest highlights of every year were her birthday and the LaSalle New Year's Eve parties where we always had a blast with her.
We feel privileged and lucky to, not only to have known her, but to have been able to call her our good friend.

Auntie, may you rest in peace. It's a great honor to have you as our friend. We will always remember your smiles, laughers, sense of humors and your signature dish- bean curd rolls (Tsat Tai).
You were always energetic on the dance floor, demonstrating leadership on the male steps, so we could follow your leads smoothly like a pro. Line dancing was a piece of cake for you, even if you missed a step, no problem, you could catch up with the beat in the end.
Your birthday parties were always "a great time" for everyone & became our annual events. Beside karaoke, chicken dance, YMCA, Macarena etc... The highlight would be the bingo game. Everyone was so happy to receive the prize that you wrapped personally for us.
Auntie you will always be in our heart, love you.

I first met Pau Pau in Toronto at one of her big, glamorous birthday celebrations. (I think this was 2014.) She was dressed to the nines with bright red lipstick and an aura of energy fueled by all her friends and family who surrounded her. Far before I married her youngest grandson Justin, son of Amelia, in 2020, I’ve always appreciated how welcoming she was. She is really unforgettable and sets the bar high for what a grandmother should represent. RIP, we love you PP!

It's taken me some time to process the passing of my beloved grandmother and come up with the right words to celebrate her life.

Pau Pau, you are the light of our family. Your presence would fill up an entire room, with your endless energy and witty sense of humour. One of my dearest memories is the trip we took together in the summer of 1997 to Hong Kong and China, where we got to spend some quality time together, meet your 8th sister and her husband, and also where I got to have my own personal English translator. It was on that trip that I really got the chance to embrace my heritage and where our family came from, meeting many extended friends and family who I had never met before.

We are so blessed to have had you as the matriarch of our family for almost 102 years, watching over us all. I am thankful that my children had the experience growing up with their great grandmother, and witnessing her love for the entire family. I know that you will continue to look out for us and guide us from above, and you will forever be in our hearts.

We love you so much, and will miss you...until we meet again. Dad better watch his wallet as you will soon have your Pay Day again with him in heaven with the MJ table all ready to go.

Love,
Kev

I still remember the funny yet inspiring story of 'A monk by a river' you shared with us in the morning assembly. What an amazing person and what a remarkable life. The legacy #4 Goo-Pau has left on our family is unmatched by any words that can be written. I hope we can celebrate her life well lived, remembering the good times we’ve shared as a family. Sending our love, thoughts, and prayers during this difficult time.

I am very saddened by
the passing of auntie Kwan.  She is well loved and respected by us all

Reading the tributes and viewing the photos was so intriguing. We only met a few times during the past 5 decades. Yet I can echo the same sentiment shared by others in those tributes. What an influential educator, philanthropist, loving mother and grandmother with such impact to her descendents and the people of Hong Kong!

My family is so blessed and proud to be related to Auntie Kwan's family. While her loss is being mourned by us, her legacy will stay in our hearts forever.

I will share this note with my children.  The site was designed with so much love and skills.  This is the best tribute to the past legacy of Auntie Kwan.

May her soul rest in peace! Please accept my deepest condolences.

Dear Ms Kwan,

I still remember your Geography classes and Maths ones. Besides admiring your cheungsams and high heeled shoes while watching you write on the blackboard or talk occasionally on stage at morning assemblies, I also enjoyed the fun things you said and your fresh ways of looking at life. You showed me new angles of seeing things. You were the one who opened my mind to the globe and Algebra.

Knowing Ame and Sonja all these years - attractive in looks and personality, brave, creative and responsible ladies that you raised them to be (and needless to say the same of Kenny and Monica), you must have been proud of your four lovely daughters and much comforted by the great love and care in their looking after you.

You were an inspiration, guide and support, not only to them, but to your big family and Ying Wa and us students.

We are honoured to have you as our teacher, and our 伯母 through Kenny, Monica, Amelia and Sonja.

You are greatly missed.

Rest in peace and love.

With deep respect,
Yuk Chun

I truly cherish all the times that I spent with my dear #4 Goo-Pau. Whenever I visited her in Hong Kong or Toronto, I will always remember her vivacious energy in conversation and on the dance floor!
She was always interested in what I was up to, and had a caring and generous heart. Not having any grandparents on my mother's side, she was the Kwan elder that I look up to the most.
I am honored and blessed that she graced my life. May she rest in peace.

Auntie Chan's zest for life was unmatched for any generation around her, young or old. Her kind and friendly nature could easily warm up the room. Her love and charm touched our hearts and many others around her.

Our deepest sympathy to Kenny, Monica, Amelia, and Sonja and your families. Auntie Chan's strength and grace was very apparent and dwells in all of you. We will miss our dear friend Auntie.

Her Life

Love,
Kev

I first met Pau Pau in Toronto at one of her big, glamorous birthday celebrations. (I think this was 2014.) She was dressed to the nines with bright red lipstick and an aura of energy fueled by all her friends and family who surrounded her. Far before I married her youngest grandson Justin, son of Amelia, in 2020, I’ve always appreciated how welcoming she was. She is really unforgettable and sets the bar high for what a grandmother should represent. RIP, we love you PP!

Over many years for every Christmas, Ms Kwan would knit colourful woollen slippers to gift to some of us in her circle of close friends and the Ying Wa family. Ms Kwan always remembered my shoe size, and would make sure to make mine slightly larger than the average. From one Christmas to the next, well into her nineties, she would be lovingly knitting and knitting amongst her many other activities. She had also made them for school fundraising at our Ying Wa alumnae gatherings. My treasured collection hoarded over the years would make for some hot auction items at a next event!
