LIFE, FAMILY & PASSIONS:

Zuhair was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1932 and immigrated in 1960 to the United States to further his education. He loved his Lebanese culture and enjoyed sharing all the best that it had to offer. He met and married Carolee in 1963 and soon after they began to travel the world together, ultimately visiting a whopping 47 countries and spanning 5 continents during their 57 years of marriage! He made numerous trips back to his homeland over the years and always shared fond stories of his time with family and days spent along the Mediterranean looking out at his beloved Pigeon Rocks, along Beirut’s picturesque seaside.

He was a great conversationalist who loved to share stories and incite curiosity in others with his vast knowledge of the world. No matter the subject, you could always count on him to be ready with an interesting fact or story. He spoke several languages and never shied away from using his linguistic skills on any willing participant. He instilled in his two daughters, Suzanne and Anissa, and his two grandchildren, Jonathan and Olivia, the importance of seeking out the goodness in others and learning about the world around them. Whether it was family road trips spent camping across the USA, cruising the Alaskan passages, riding waves in Hawaii or the vast array of European adventures - a new trip was always on the horizon.

His passion for cycling was second only to his love for his family. He could frequently be seen pedaling down the bike path with his flag flying high. He was happiest spending the day with the sun shining bright, the wind at his back and the beach by his side. We often joked about how many miles he must have pedaled over the years… Any guesses?

In addition to cycling, gardening was another passion he enjoyed. The fragrant scent of plumerias and tuberoses were among his favorite blooms bursting in the backyard. His fruit trees - and there were many over the years - (figs, loquats, grapes, apricots, plums, nectarines…) also brought him joy even though there was a constant battle with the squirrels over the harvest. As the years went by the garden evolved and a koi pond came and went bringing lots of fun times for the grandkids and a hobby for him to enjoy. He visited many lovely gardens both near and abroad and always appreciated the beauty of nature.

Ultimately, our father’s greatest gift was the love and care he gave so freely to us all. He was a loving and committed husband and father who led by example, and gave good advice. He was protective, yet willing to let us spread our wings and learn from our mistakes. He was proud of our accomplishments and never missed an opportunity to share them with others. He taught what it meant to have a strong work ethic and treat others with respect, to spend responsibly and save for a rainy day and to do what you love - but most importantly, he taught us to always put family first. For that and so much more, our family is truly grateful. I think it’s safe to say, for all who knew him, he left an impression on your heart and wisdom in your life in some way or another.

WORK:

Steve Jobs once said, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”  Loving what you do every day is a gift not many people can say they had but Harry did. It was not just the work itself, but the lifelong friendships he made along the way that brought meaning and purpose to his life. He began his career in Aerospace working for Continental Airlines as an airline mechanic where he worked for 20 years.  He moved on next to work at Hughes Aircraft Space & Defense program on the combat  AH-64 Apache Helicopter project. Harry spent the last 14 years of his career working at TRW Inc. at Space Park in Redondo Beach, CA in the (DSP) Defense Support Program. He was part of a team responsible for building and launching defense satellites for NASA into space from Cocoa Beach, Florida. He was proud and fulfilled by the work he did there and often said it didn’t feel like “work” because he loved what he was doing so much and the people he worked with. He retired happily at the age of 68 and enjoyed filling his days with his passions - family, friends, travel and cycling. His was a life well lived.

Zuhair “Harry” Shbaro was loved by many both near and far. He is survived by his wife Carolee, his two daughters, Suzanne and Anissa, his son-in-law Edward Obeda, his grandchildren, Jonathan and Olivia Obeda. I have been a friend of Anissa’s since I was a little girl. Anissa used to baby sit me! We are friends to this day and she never hesitates to take the time to talk to me, encourage me, and give me wise counsel. I have known the Shbaros for as long as I can remember.
When I think of the Shbaros, the first thing that comes to mind is the strength and wisdom of the women.
Carolee always invited me into her home in Westchester and there was always something to smell, such as the amazing cooking she was attending to or the fragrance of the candles and whatever other secrets she had up her sleeve to make a home feel inviting and loving, She even decorated my home and did a brilliant job! Carolee knows how to make a house a home. She always has an encouraging word to everyone she meets and a silent strength which has amazed me over the years. A truly classy lady. Harry picked an amazing woman!
Anissa has been there for me through thick and thin. A friend I can count on forever. Her strong resolve and love for life is evident in all she does. Her passion for the next generation and her teaching skills are top notch. Anissa gives her best to all she puts her mind to. She is a gem. Harry raised an amazing woman!
Suzanne has always been someone I look up to as a smart woman who is a hard worker, a caring person, and someone who has an amazing family and children of her own. Suzanne has a smile for everyone and a caring spirit. These qualities have been evident to me for years. Harry raised an amazing woman!
Olivia, who I am just getting to know is so bright and polite. An amazing future ahead. As the saying goes “The World is your oyster.” It was so great to talk to you at the memorial about all of your future plans and what great things you will bring to this world! Your Grandfather would be proud. Harry raised an amazing Granddaughter!
So, in closing, I think I respect Harry for many things such as his listening ear, his calmness, and his love of travel. But...as I reflect, I respect him most for the way he treated his wife and raised his daughters and grandchildren.
Thank you Harry for your amazing example and know the world will miss you.
And to the women Harry influenced, keep shining and know this is the type of man we need more of on this earth. ❤️

Harry was a God-send into my life when we moved next door to him in 1978. Knowing he was a mechanic, I never had far to go for assistance to work on my car, or any other thing I had going on. I can remember brake jobs lasting into the evening and Harry was with me all the time. I missed him when his employment would take him out of town, and I miss him now. I still need a 'supervisor'. I consider myself blessed to have lived next door to him. You were a blessing to our entire family, up one generation and down two.
Rest in Peace, my friend, and know we all miss and love you. You left big shoes to fill.

We will miss Uncle Harry so much and are sending our love from the East Coast. Some of my earliest memories are when Aunt Carolee and Uncle Harry came to visit. When he picked us up from school, the three of us girls “tricked” him into taking a bunch of wrong turns into dead ends and he played along masterfully, making big exaggerated turning motions with his hands on the steering wheel and saying, “Really? This is the right way!?” I remember him reading the Aladdin book to Lizzie and acting out the scenes with gusto and pronouncing the characters names properly in Arabic, only to be corrected by the 5 year old about the American movie pronunciation. I remember playing on the beach at his condo in FL with coffee cans and spoons. And I remember his “kick-sy, kick-sy” tickling game. But more than any of those specific moments, I remember him filling our time together with joy and teaching us that adults could sometimes create more fun than the kids could. I will miss him and cherish those memories and lessons forever.

Such a beautiful tribute that captures so well the essence of Harry! Mr. Shbaro was a part of all of my important life events: graduations, wedding, etc. he was like a second father to me especially since I spent so much time at the house playing with Anissa as a kid and later just hanging out as a teenager. I will always remember Harry’s ready smile, his vast wealth of knowledge/stories and his adventurous spirit. He has inspired me to go out and see the world and explore as much as I can. If I can only see half of what he did I think I’ll be doing okay! Family (and extended “family” like me) were so important to Harry which I saw in the way he was always interested in what I was doing, how my kids were and what they were up to. He cared so much about those he loved and I am grateful to be included as a part of the Shbaro family for all these years. Harry left an indelible mark on me which has already manifested itself in my desire to be a lifelong learner and world traveler. Each trip I take I will always think of his footsteps preceding mine, encouraging me to live life to the fullest. For this, and all of the love and support he has shown me throughout my life I am eternally grateful.

Sending our love and condolences from down under, Melbourne Australia.
We cherished every minute we spent with Zuhair and loved his free spirit.
Zuhair loved photography and always remember Zuhair asking us to wear red for the photo
My daughter Jenna referred to Zuhair as the uncle “who speaks funny”… not being used to his American accent.
I loved the story telling that Zuhair brought at his visits filling his younger brother Nizar (dad) with his adventures and wisdom on life. Mum’s cooking (Hind) was Zuhair’s highlight when visiting Australia as it reminded him of his mother’s dishes and his passion for the Lebanese cuisine.
Uncle Zuhair’s memories will always be in our hearts ♥️
Love you , miss you from your family in Australia:

*Malak, Khalil, Hassan & Jenna Sukkar
*Mirna, Dib, Mohamad, Haysam, Omar & Reda Kotob

What a beautiful slide show and tribute to Mr. Shbaro. I loved seeing him, his travels, and growing family throughout the years. I learned so much about him from your lifestory Anissa. Harry's daughter Suzanne and I became instant friends when we attended Cal State Northridge. The Shbaros became a second family to me. I can see in the slide show when I entered into their lives (late 80's-big hair). Mr. Shbaro always looked fit and very engaged in life. He was usually coming or going on a bike ride when I was visiting, and Mr. and Mrs. Shbaro were typically planning their next big trip. I feel so blessed to know this wonderful family.  I am so happy to see Mr. Shbaro again in these beautiful photos, and see him young and dashing, visiting other lands, and then as a beloved grandfather. You can see the love you have for each other in these pictures. Sending my love to Mrs. Shbaro, Suzanne, Anissa, Ed, Jonathan and Olivia. A thousand plumerias to Mr. Shbaro and you all

ZUHAIR TOUFIK SHBARO

Wedding Day & Honeymoon Trip ~

Zuhair and Carolee were married on August 3, 1963 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their honeymoon trip spanned several months and took them to sites across the globe. It ended with an extended stay in Beirut, Lebanon where they visited with family. This trip was the start of what would become a life-long love of travel for them both. They truly saw the world together.

Family Time ~
And then there were three... In 1966, Suzanne was born followed two years later in 1968 with the birth of Anissa, bringing the family unit to four!  We were very blessed to have a father who was so devoted to this family. He gave us the gift of his love and also his time. He was always there to make us laugh or dry our tears. He took us on family vacations, cooked us great meals, helped with our homework...(math), played ball in the yard, took us on bike rides and so, so much more. It was from these times that we learned our greatest life lessons.

Weddings ~
In 1997 my father walked both of his daughters down the aisle in two beautiful ceremonies. They were special days of celebrations with family and friends.

Work Years, Retirement Party & Travels ~
My father was one of the fortunate people who could honestly say that he loved his work. He had a long career working in the Aerospace industry beginning at Continental Airlines, then at Hughes Aircraft before retiring from TRW in 2000. During his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, cycling, gardening and do more traveling with Carolee and family.

The Grandkids ~ Papa
Having grandchildren was one of my Dad's greatest joys in life. He loved spending time with Jonathan and Olivia and was there for every milestone along the way. From their first tooth to their highschool and college graduations, and every birthday in between,  he was there to experience it all. They brought many smiles, love and laughter to their Papa throughout the years. He was so very proud of them.

More Memories with Family & Friends ~
There are so many wonderful memories of times spent together with family and friends. We know that many of you may also have photos of my Father and we welcome you to post them on this site. Please feel free to share a story or write a tribute if you'd like. All will be cherished and much appreciated. My family and I thank you for your love and support.
