Her Life

Mrs. Annie Anyagwo Imo was born in Amokwe Item to the family of Mazi Samuel Agu Ogali and his wife, Jenny on February 24th 1929.

Mazi S.A. Ogali was the first Item man to realize the tremendous advantage in sending his daughters to receive secondary school education. So his two daughters Oyidia and Anyagwo were the very first Item girls to obtain secondary school education.
Annie attended the Duke Town School, Calabar from Primary to Junior Secondary School. Next, she completed her secondary school education at St. Theresa’s College, Ibadan. She then studied at the United Missionary College (UMC) Ibadan to become a teacher. Since then Annie was a teacher par excellence all her life. Annie started her teaching career at the Edgerly Memorial School, Calabar. Next, she transferred to the newly established Union Secondary school, Ibiaku in present day, Akwa Ibom State. She was given the Eastern Nigeria Scholarship to study at the Goldsmith College, University of London.
When she returned to Nigeria with her Ministry of Education certificate, she was posted to teach at the Queen’s school, Enugu.
Since Annie’s marriage in December, 1958, she taught at the Methodist Girl’s High School, Yaba, Archdeacon Memorial Girl’s School, Elelenwo, Port Harcourt and became the first principal of Iponri Estate High School, Lagos.
It is of note to record that late in the 1970s, Annie as Mrs. Imo went back to the University of Lagos to study full time and obtain her BA. Hons. Education degree.
Annie not only taught english literature, mathematics and religious knowledge, but also physical education and sports.
In 1983 she was given the merit award as the best Principal of the year by the Surulere Schools Management Committee, Lagos State.
She served on the National and Lagos State Sport’s Commission. In Athletics, she served as a Coach, Team Manager and Member of the Athletics Association of Nigeria.
Annie served as 1st Vice Chairman of Badminton Association of Nigeria, 1975-1977 and in the Gymnastics and Calisthenics Association during the 3rd International Championship held in Nigeria.
Mrs. Imo was a Life member of Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International. She was also a member guide and co-coordinator of Friendship Bible Studies (Stonecroft Bible Studies).
Annie was the President of Item Women’s Union, Lagos (1973-1989); she was made Matron of the Union. She represented Item Union at the Bende Divisional Union, Lagos.
Annie was a leader in the Church (Girls Brigade). She was class leader at Hoares Memorial Methodist Church until she was elected Leader Emeritus (Elder) in 2005.
She was a role model to Item Women in Lagos. Others emulated her example to go back to school as mothers.
 As  a mother, she was beyond compare. Always believing in us, shaping and molding us, encouraging us in the way of the Lord. We will miss you mom!
