Grandma's Story of Meeting Granddaddy

January 5, 2014

I remember one day I asked Grandma about how she met Granddaddy. She told me a long story of how she ran away from home at age 12 because "there were to many mouths to feed" and she confided in me that she always felt guilty about her sister dying while she was babysitting her. She hitch hiked from South Carolina and told me of the many people she met. I was scared hearing about a 12 year old little girl catching rides with strangers but I guess it was a different time then. She ended up in Quantico where Granddaddy was stationed. She told me it was "love at first site" even though he was a great deal older than her. She spoke of how handsome he looked in his uniform and she felt privileged to be with him. She then shared with me that, at first, he would sneak her into the barracks at night so she had a place to sleep. I guess that got risky after a bit so Granddaddy paid for her to stay in a nearby hotel. She said she spent her time waiting for him to come and join her. She mentioned a particular dance that he took her too but they had to lie to get her on base because of her age. I don't remember the specifics behind this dance now but I just recall the sparkle in her eyes because not only was she escorted by Granddaddy but he had bought her a very pretty dress which was not something she was used to having coming from a poor family. She looked really happy as she told me that story. She went on to tell me about them getting married soon after but right now I can't remember the details. Maybe someone else can?
