Memories and Love from Dick Stanford's daughter and grandchildren

July 28, 2014

Posted on behalf of Dick Stanford's daughter Liz Swanson

Eric and I were both so thrilled to have Barbara as a part of our family and lives. She brightened the room with her very presence. Not only was she a gift to us as my father’s wife, she was an awesome loving grandmother to our children. Each of our kids wrote her a letter expressing their love to her before she died. Here are some of the memories and sentiments they expressed about their sweet Grandma Barbara: (Liz/Betsy Swanson, Dick’s daughter)

One of my favorite memories is when Grandma Barbara visited Colorado. We did so many things. We went to the zoo and saw the baby polar bears " Klondike and snow". We went to the botanic gardens and made beautiful magazine butterfly magnets. (I think I asked her to make those every time I saw her.) I also loved that red sassy sports car of hers. I thought I had thee world’s coolest grandma (And I did!) She made people around her feel like they were the most important people in the world.

I remember being in Grandma Barbara’s and Grandpa’s wedding and walking down the aisle carrying Grandpa’s little silver bowl with the ring in it just like Grandpa did for his own grandfather's wedding.  As kids it was always so fun coming to visit my grandparents at their condo, feeding the ducks and eating the "breakfast of champions" with Grandpa.  While Grandpa was more quiet, Grandma Barbara’s bubbly, loving personality always filled up the room.  She was always so considerate and giving. Grandma Barbara was the "hip Grandma" who would buy cool California style clothes for me to wear that I loved.  She always encouraged me to do things I loved to do too. I remember her sitting next to me and letting me use her art supplies to create a picture. At the time, I was into sharks and skulls but I didn't ever feel judged by her. She always made me feel free to be myself.  Jeff Swanson

Barbara the Traveler

July 17, 2014

If there was one thing that Barbara enjoyed, it was travelling.  I had the privilege of joining her for a trip to Hawaii.  We saw great birds and even better volcanic flows.  Our favorite shared memory was the boat trip we took to watch the lava flow into the ocean.  The heat set up water spouts we watched dance accross the water.

Barbara had so many fun stories about her travels with her "darling Dick".  I particularly remember the trip to China when luggage was lost.  She proudly recounted her ability to cope for the weeks it took for it to catch up.

Along with her friend Barbara Hughbanks, we made a few trips to Tucson for birding, good meals and Quiddler.  She was to have joined us this year, but as her health began to fail, she had to send her regrets.  Little did we know that this was a signal that her traveling days were over.
