Sunday Dinner

September 2, 2021
Every Sunday, we would have a family dinner.  Unlike every other day of the week, we would sit in the Dining Room instead of at the kitchen counter.

A typical Sunday dinner consisted of an Eye of Round Roast cooked on the stove in what I believe was originally a pressure cooker.  It was browned  first, and cooked in water with celery, onion, and a bay leaf or two.  When the roast was done, Mom used Kitchen Bouquet to darken the gravy which she thickened with a slurry of flour and water.

In addition to the roast, we normally had green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, bread, Cole slaw, baked macaroni and cheese, and either creamed corn or canned peas.

The creamed corn or canned peas were necessary because at that time I did not eat green beans, Cole slaw, or baked macaroni and cheese.  It was not until I was in my 20s that I tried the green beans and baked  macaroni and cheese.  I discovered what I had been missing for years.  I still cannot bring myself to try Cole slaw... Bleh!

After Mom passed, this practice ended which is really unfortunate.  I remember Mom telling me no matter where in the world I was, I was expected to call on the weekend.  Generally speaking, Sunday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. was a time when I could catch everyone at the house.

I miss those days...  Occasionally, I will cook this very same dinner.  It brings back many fond memories of sitting around the dining room table as a family.
