Uko Uche was born in Okon-Aku in Ohafia Local Government Area (LGA) in Abia State, Nigeria to late Chief Uche Ole and late Madam Nwadiya Ori Onyyukwu on June 20, 1947. He was 1 of 4 children from his mother, 1 of 15 from his father.
Uko Uche started a long journey in his education that eventually led him to the United States. After his Elementary education, he did Higher Elementary Training at Ididep, Cross River, Nigeria. Upon finishing at Teacher's Training College at McGregor College, he receieved the Nigerian Teacher's Grade Two Certificate, which was the highest certification a teacher could receive at that time. After several teaching positions in Nigeria as a headmaster classroom teacher in elementary and high school, he ended up teaching many years and many students. He migrated to The United States in 1980 to continue his education. He received his Bachelor's degree in Education, Master's Degree in Edcational Administration, and PhD in Multicultural Education in a Global Classroom.
Outside of his educational career, he was the first president of Ohafia National Organization (ONO), Dallas Chapter. He received the honor of Teacher of the Week in 1995 from Dallas Independent School District (DISD). He was also a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas.
He was also very dedicated to his family. He married Patience Uche on August 1, 1981 and remained married to her for 32 years. They were blessed with five children: Harry, Casey, Michelle, Nina, and Diana. He also had a daughter from a previous relationship, Ogbonne Ori. He also considered his dog Lycos a part of his family, having a friendship with him for 14 years.
Dr. Uko Uche, affectionately known to many as Greene, lost his battle with complications from a stroke on January 25, 2014. He will be missed by all. He is gone but never forgotten.
