13 - Lawrence Welk - Remember

Earl Richard Broderick was born on August 2nd, 1932 in Morris Illinois and passed away due to complications related to Parkinson’s disease on December 17, 2011 at his home in Sun City Arizona.  Earl was survived by his wife Ella, daughter Lauren and his two sons Paul and Mike.

Earl was referred to fondly by friends and family growing up in his hometown of Morris Illinois as “Bud”.  He was one of six children: Maxine, Nona, Barbara, Evelyn and Sonny.  He commenced pursuing his passion as an educator when he enrolled in college at Northern  Illinois University where he met his wife Ella.  He exhibited his tireless work ethic during his college years as he worked numerous jobs while pursuing his degree.

After graduating college, Earl and Ella married and he started his career as a teacher in Kirkland, Illinois before eventually joining  Garden Grove Unified School Dist. 1962 where he would remain until retiring in 1995.  He was a passionate educator and was a subject matter expert on topics related to US history, US presidents and the US Constitution; which came in handy when playing Trivial Pursuit, crossword puzzles and shouting out the answer when watching Jeopardy on TV before the contestants did.

Earl was a proud father of three children and a strong role model as he extolled hard work and educational values. One of his favorite part-time jobs was working in cash control at Disneyland. All of his children, including his five grandchildren all enjoyed the benefits.

After a fulfilling 35 year career as an educator, Earl and Ella happily retired in a small town called LaHave in Nova Scotia Canada during the spring, summer and fall. Every winter, then would return to their home in Sun City, Arizona.  During his retirement years, Earl transitioned from an educator to an author as he continued his pursuit of his passion of US history by writing 3 books containing interesting stories that were not typically in textbooks.  His books were entitled “Fabric of History”, “Moments in Time” and “Sea Through Shining Sea”.  Earl’s work and books were enjoyed by family and friends and can be found in Morris, IL local and school libraries.

Earl lived life with great passion, laughter and humor.  He was a diehard Notre Dame football fan and a season ticket holder for many years with the California Angels.   He could not watch enough Lawrence Welk and Andre Reiu shows.  Waitresses that possessed any resemblance of a sense of humor loved him.  He saved his greatest love for his wife of 54 years, Ella.
