Services for retired U.S. Army Col. Edward H. Heilbron, 97, of Temple will be 11 a.m. today in Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen with the Rev. Thom Lamb officiating.

Col. Heilbron died Tuesday, Sept. 17, in a Temple hospital.

He was born on July 25, 1916, in Chicago and grew up in Illinois. He graduated from Chillicothe Township High School in 1934. In 1938, he received a bachelor’s degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. and a Juris Doctorate of Law from Northwestern Law School in Chicago in 1941.

He married Jewel Huddleston. He served in the U.S. Army, 1942-1973, attaining the rank of 0-6 colonel in the Army Reserve. He served as Director of the Bradley Alumnae Association, and Chairman of The Council of Northwestern School Campus in Chicago. He moved to Florida in 1952; to Dallas in 1976; and to Temple in 1999. He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, has been an instructor in Senior Defensive Driving, and has been active with the Wildflower Country Club bridge group. He served as an officer for four years at The National Level of the Military Order of the World Wars; Vice President and Business Manager of Pine Crest High School in Fort Lauderdale; Director of the Fort Lauderdale Executive Association; and President of the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club; President of the Retired Officers Association; President of the Florida Council of Independent Schools; Director of United Way in Fort Lauderdale; Commander of the Dallas Chapter of the MOWW; Commander of The Texas Department of the MOWW; and the Commander of Region VIII.

Survivors include his wife; two stepsons, Ned Butler of Brenham and Gary Butler of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Terry Butler of Aspen, Colo., and Karen Foster of Denton; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Military Order of The World Wars, 435 North Lee Street, Arlington, VA 22314.
