Just Heavenly

September 3, 2020
Heber,

As you know we have shared way to many adventures to note down here. I look back fondly at that time of our lives my friend. I'll never forget when we got pulled over and ticked for speeding in the temple parking lot in Hawaii. Let's just say we were enthusiastic to serve the Lord.;) I know that you are still in the service of your Heavenly Father. Godspeed my friend. We love and miss you!

Heber's brain child

September 22, 2017

I bought a stand up paddle board in 2009 or so, and when Heber got on the board he was hooked. He quickly was looking for options, but they were on average to expensive. Soon there after he found an inflatable kayak, ofcourse as the practical guy that he was. He liked it but still wanted the ability to stand.

We were talking one day and said you need to make this...(The Photo) An inflatable cross between a kayak and a paddle board. Thanks Heber for the great Idea. This one is for you! Happy belated birthday!

How to get a date by Heber....

September 8, 2014

I was enjoying a month surf vacation at my uncles place across from sunset beach in Hawaii. Heber was going to school at BYUH at the time. After a priesthood meeting I decided to meet him on campus and he was going to show me how to get a date. I said ok have at it. So Heber approached some cute girl and said if I get those coconuts up there off of that palm tree will you go out with me. She accepted. So he took his shoes off, scaled the tree. Got to the top rattled around the coconuts and a few fell down. He then came down and opened them up for her. So there you go.

Colorado blues....

September 8, 2014

Don't as me how or why but Heber got a job as a cashier at a bank in the middle of nowhere at a bank in a remote mountain town in Colorado. He called me up one night while I was living in North Carolina and told me he was freezing cold. After talking to him about why he was freezing cold he explained that he was living in a van that he bought in some empty parking lot somewhere. Apparently he made a deal with the owner of the lot to park there. First of all let me explain. Heber was very frugal and did not like a bad deal and would do whatever he needed to do to save a penny or two. So this van had carpeted walls and he got a bed and blankets in the back but he had no heater in the van. So in the mountains of colorado in the winter time its probably fair to say that temperatures were in the negatives most of the winter. He was going to a LA fitness or 24 hour fitness to shower, shave, work out and for warmth. Other than that he was working at the bank. The rest of the time he said was solitary and cold. He didn't mind it but that night the cold got to him and he wanted to tell me so.

The dead Chihuahua

September 7, 2014

San Antonio Texas. I convinced Heber to come out and be a tech for the summer while I was selling pest control. One day while I was selling Heber called me up and was very emotional. He told me that he didn't know where to put the rodent bait for a service call that he had previously serviced so he put the bait in the garage AND the kitchen. He had just gotten off the phone with the owners of the company we worked for who had just been trying to appease the angry homeowner whose Chihuahua had ingested the poison. They were obviously not happy with him and got Hebers side and were coming in town to meet with him. Heber told me he was nervous he was going to lose his job and was explaining to me that nobody had ever told him not to put rodent bait in the kitchen. I told him where to put the bait and where not to put the bait. I assured him that everything would work out and that it would be fine. Well, so the company had to foot the bill for the vet and probably some kind of settlement for the dog that ended up dying. Heber did not lose his job and we lived to share another adventure together.

The Dances

September 7, 2014

My first memories of Heber and when we started hanging out was at Ricks College when he was violently convulsing on the ground at a school dance. I went over to ask if he was ok and if he needed help.  He said that he was just having fun and that was one of his dance moves. There was no doubt in my mind that this guy was wierd and that he may have a loose screw. It was because of those two conclusions that I invited him to hang out with us for the rest of the night. We had a lot of fun and made a true and lasting friendship.....

Another dance a few years removed we were in a dance club in San Antonio on the river walk and Heber and I were the only squeaky clean non drinking guys at the club. We were dancing and lightly socializing. Heber decided he was going to climb up on the rafters of the building and dance from a higher view. He scaled up the trusses and got up maybe 20' and started screaming and hollering really loud to the crowd's delight. Security came and got him down. We continued to dance and had quite a few admirerers after that. As a consolation Heber decided to get on top of a 6' speaker and dance away. I remember a couple of girls who were attorneys came over and wanted to hang out. We started to dance with them. They asked what we were on. We said we were on nothing, just having good clean fun. They didn't beleive us and wanted us to share what we had with them. We told them finally that we were good mormon boys having fun and were out for the summer working.

Bouncy Slide and Peanut Island

September 4, 2014

So there was some  activity for the kids at BYU Hawaii and Heber and i were there. It might have been a ward activity or something, i cant remember too many details. But i do remember they had one of those big blow up slides. As you can probably guess, Heber was not going to let the little kids have all the fun. So, as i stood there bored  and eating a kids treat or whatever, Heber suggests we play on the slide. For a while we  messed around practically deflating it while the kids were off somewhere else. After a while we found it was more fun to run at it full speed, jump up into the side of it and get shot back out from the air pressure. It was a lot of fun! The kids joined in by sitting at the bottom of the slide and getting launched as well. The parents of the children were not happy on the other hand! One parent  in particular rebuked us both pretty bad.  We felt kinda dumb at the time. I would do it again without hesitation however, but only with Heber. He was a kid at hart for sure and could really get you excited about something.

Another time Heber thought it would be fun to paddle a small raft from Laie Point to Peanut Island and go snorkeling around it.  He asked me to come along and so i did. We had a great time and saw some cool stuff. We found there is a cave that runs two directions and lets light shine through so you can see all the way to the end of one. We didn't go into the cave, but we saw the biggest fish or shark or something at the end of that cave.  On one side of the island the reef drops off very deep till its dark, on the other side it was around 15-20' and clear to the bottom. I thought it would be cool to dive a little deeper than i usually did to get a closer look at one of those eel things that was coming out of the rocks and i didn't equalize by pinching my nose and blowing or whatever. At 15' or so i blew out one of my eardrum because i'm dumb, and felt super sick. I was pretty much done for and would not have made it back if Heber had not pulled me all the way back to the point.

I really miss him. I'm sure a lot of others do to. Nice to have a place to write this down.

Thanks

I remember when James and I went with Heber to Laie Point. Heber decided to swim out to the farthest rock island and I was so worried for his safety. He was an adventurous guy. Well he swam out there and then dove under the rock to see what it was like. I kept praying that he would be ok and James kept telling me not to freak out. :) When Heber swam back to the Point, he had also brought a chunk of rock or metal from the depths of the sea which I was impressed that he could dive all the way to the bottom of the ocean to get. He was a real crack up guy and did the most outrageous things.  He and James were such great friends. We will miss Heber always. He was more like a brother to us. Rest in Peace Heber.

My go-to "Heber Stories"

September 3, 2013

I tell a "Heber story" at least once a month. Peoples favorite are: the one where Heber caught a chicken and gave it to a girl for her birthday thinking it would jump out and everyone would laugh, but the chicken got sick while in the box and when it was opened it just kinda laid there - all sick and stuff. All the girls got mad at Heber for it.

Another favorite is, when Heber got banned from Sunset beach for charging the line-up with a blow up raft. The lifegaurd took his name and everything. Or when Heber and I tried to watch tv for 24 hours straight. Turns out 24 hours of TV is a very difficult thing to accomplish.

I miss him a lot as I know many do. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I haven't forgotten him and I never will. He was an amazing larger than life friend to me. My sun drentched memories of college days on the North Shore of Hawaii always bring back bright images of his smile, his laugh, and the adventures that would befall you if you hung around with Heber Moulton...

Molokai

September 3, 2013

I found this note the other day that Heber had drawn during church one day just before his kayaking trip to celebrate his 30th birthday with Eric Phillips and it made me smile. It says in Russian "Thank you for not being against my trip to Molokai. I will be careful."

He loved that trip where he and Eric kayaked 30 miles around the north side of Molokai and lived off the land for three days.  Heber's kind of vacation!

Best times

May 10, 2013

Heber was one of those few people who I can call best friends.  The kind of guy you can always rely on - he was always there when needed.  The picture I uploaded is from the Food Fest at BYU-H - Heber helped me make 200+ Russian crepes that day for the fundraiser (the Russian flag was also his creation).  This is one of the pre-Olya pics... I know some people thought he had a thing for Russian girls, but I thought the Russian people just had a thing for Heber.  They were drawn to him for a number of reasons, but mainly because Heber loved everything about Russian people and accepted them the way they were when others didn't understand or judge... Heber was just very easy to be around, and he made people around him feel important and happy - never judged or criticised... I, for instance, didn't think who was Russian or American or something else around him - we were just happy college kids hanging out and having fun, doing crazy things that you could only do with your best of friends, someone like Heber, and the things that will come back in your dreams for the rest of your life (like snorkeling and hiking in Hawaii)... I miss those days and Heber... It's really hard to see your best friends go to the other side so early...

My Best Friend

September 30, 2012

Where do I even start? I'll start be saying that I am crying right now because I miss Heber. I have had a few people in my life that I could say were my best friends and Heber is one of them. I have not had a friend who I felt more connected to than Heber. I loved him with all my heart. I felt good when I was with him. We understood each other. We were kindred spirits.
I use the past tense on purpose, not because those things have changed, I know he is still Heber and I will see him again, but he is not here now. I can't call him. I can't plan on seeing him. I can't look forward to our next adventure. I think about him often. From the the very first time we met I felt like I had found a brother and a friend. We got along perfectly.
I find some comfort in knowing that he passed doing something he loved. I don't ask any "What if?"s or "If only"s. He was engaged in life and it was his time to go. I am thankful he left a legacy of literally diving in and doing the things he loved, and I am inspired by that legacy. His example helps me today to remember to always be engaged in life, engaged with people around me, and doing the things I love to do. But, I will never be okay that he is gone. I will always miss him. I will always wish he was still here. I will always wish I could pick up the phone and call him. I will always mourn his passing because I am selfish. I want my friend here with me in this life and when I think of him I will always cry. I miss him.
With Love,
Jared

Heber's 31st Birthday

September 23, 2012

If there was a day that I would say Heber Moulton had reached Nirvana it would have been his 31st birthday.  He spent the day diving at Waimea Bay where he frequently swam with dolphins and whales.  Hours later, he came to shore only to be greated by his beautiful wife Olya and steaks being grilled on his personal barbeque.  The afternoon was spent enjoying friends and Waimea's beautiful scenery.  The day was topped off with birthday cake and watching the sunset.   I have always loved this picture of Heber because I know he was as close to heaven as he could be here on earth.  Heber we miss and love you so much.  We are remineded daily of your adventurous spirit here in the islands.

Forbidden waterfall.

September 19, 2012

We came to Hawaii in 2007 and were able to spend some time sightseeing. One of the things that we were able to do with Heber and Olya was to go on this hike to a beautiful waterfall. The only caveat was that the path was supposed to be closed off for hiking due to falling rocks. :) That wasn't about to stop our tourguides though. Heber claimed they closed it for no reason whatsoever. :) All the way there we were chuckling passing "no trespassing- forbidden path" signs on every other tree. The waterfall definitely didn't disappoint- we'll always remember our little  adventure with Heber.

College memories

September 19, 2012

I first met Heber at Ricks College in Idaho. We even danced together at a campus dance (pre Olya, of course!)! Later we both transferred to BYU-Hawaii and one evening my roommates and I noticed something strange going outside in our front yard. It was Heber and his buddy climbing our tree! Definitely random.  He was also seen around town driving a car that he painted to look like a fish. Totally Heber style. I found out he served a mission in Russia and had a thing for Russian girls. When new, young, cute freshman Olya came on campus and I found out she was from Russia, I INSTANTLY knew it was a match made in HEAVEN! It was absolutely no surprise whatsoever when I found out they started dating and eventually got engaged. Truly meant to be.

September 19, 2012

Heber if we were all in Hawaii I sure hope we could go celebrate by eating for hours and hours at Camelia!!! Happy Birthday :)

Dear Heber,
34 years ago you came to this earth. I am sure the angels were rejoicing that day just as they were when you returned back to your Father in Heaven. How lucky I was to have you in my life and how much I miss you dear Heber!

I was remembering your last birthday that we celebrated together on Maui and I found this email that you wrote to your family that week:
" For my birthday we had some friends in the ward (Darrick & Kelly) that had a job (installs home theaters) in Maui so we got to stay at a nice place. While Darrick worked Olya spent time with Kellie, this allowed me to go diving where ever I wanted, and as long as I wanted - the perfect b-day gift. The highlight was diving a sunken ship - the carthaginian, Olya actually came with me since I brought the kayak.  Visibility was excellent, we had a good time."

That dive to Carthaginian was one of the most incredible things we did together. The water was so clear and I loved you teaching me how to dive. You were so proud of me when I could finally do it! After the dive we grilled steaks with the Hatches. Do you remember how salty our mashed potatoes were because we didn't have any butter! It was such a fun day, as it always was with you. You made everyone laugh and be a better person just by being around you! Happy birthday dear Heber!

Blessings

September 12, 2012

I found an old email that Heber had sent to his family on Apr. 20, 2008, entitled "Blessings". I love it. Here it goes:

"Hello,
Late on the 14th (day before tax day) I get a call from a member in the ward that says he never got his tithing statement mailed to him.  So, even though it was not very convenient I decided to go down to the church to look up his donations.  I doubted he had ever paid anything because I count the tithing every week and I never remember seeing his name in the paperwork, but I went to check  anyways because he asked me to.  Sure enough, no donations, I guess he was expecting a miracle or something.  Anyways, while I was down at the church I made a stop at the grocery store that is right next door. While there I found out that this was the last day to get free ice cream for all the accumulated points that I had received.  I was eligible for 3.  After buying what I had needed the clerk gave me 2 more certificates.  Now I had 3 already and now 2 more made 5 certificates for ice cream.   I thought to myself, this is what they mean by getting blessings for church service. (Had I not gone to church I would not have gone to the store and hence, would never had gotten my 5 ice creams)  Then after we got home we lined up our ice creams in the freezer.
Olya noticed that had we received 1 more ice cream we would not have had room to receive it.

We definatlely feel blessed, its hard not to be grateful when your freezer is full of ice cream.
-Heber & Olya"

We (Kris and I) got a call from Olya before Heber's 30th birthday.  Since we live in Texas and couldn't make it to his Mexican Fiesta, she wanted to see if we could send him something in our stead.  Since Heber always did crazy, wild and childish stuff with us, we thougth it appropriate to send him an instructional video on how to be a true warrior...(no connotations in this video).  So, this video was our attempt at wishing Heber a Happy 30th Birthday.  Miss you brother!!!!!!!!!!!

Fart Sounds

September 4, 2012

I know this may be a little irreverent, but I think Heber would laugh.

When my oldest son was about 6, he came home and told us of a friend of his who could make fart sounds with his hand and armpit. I have never been able to do it, but Merrily told him that her brother could. In fact, he could make fart sounds with almost any part of his body! So, Paul & Seth waited excitedly for their Uncle Heber to visit. When we pick up Heber and Olya from the airport, Paul immediately asked Heber to show him how, even before he was in the car. We tried to tell Paul to wait, that it was inappropriate, but Heber obliged and "PFFFT, PFFFT". Giggles ensued the whole ride back to our house. Then he showed them how to do it them for selves. Paul got it right away. After more persistent begging on Paul and Seth's part, Heber showed how he could make fart sounds with just his hands, then his hand on his ear, and finally, laying down with his shirt off, with his back on the floor. To this day, that is Paul and Seth's favorite thing about their uncle Heber.

Stairway to Heaven

September 3, 2012

Heber always had a way of turning the most simple thing into an adventure. Whether it was a peaceful walk in the woods or a hike; it always ended up being a memorable event. Heber was the ultimate tour guide. When Kris and I went to visit Heber and Olga in Hawaii he took us on an "easy" hike up some mountain know as stairway to heaven. That easy hike turned into a grueling 3 hour + hike in the dark with only one water bottle to share amongst us. Although I feared for my life during those hours it was definitly a memorable experience and am thankful Heber got us out of there with only a few bumps and bruises!

meat on the side of the road

September 3, 2012

I remember talking on the phone with Heber (I in texas, Heber in Hawaii) and he expressed his frustration.  He had cooked some kind of wild meat that was delicious, and was selling it on the side of the road.  He didn't understand why no one was buying any.  I said, "Heber, would you buy meat from some crazy guy on the side of the road?"  He replied, "I see your point."

A BBQ That will Saty in History!

September 3, 2012

How to take midair jump pictures, how to correctly light an American BBQ and the best Hawaiian munchies to eat. Some of the few legacies I’ll take from this great man! May you find peace with heavenly father and watch over your loved ones until you're reunited!

It was one of those beautiful Waimanalo days. We were on the beach with a dozen other couples. Heber was itching to go diving and I really wanted us to play some beach volleyball... the usual:) Then Heber spotted a whale about half a mile to a mile off shore. Within seconds, he was already swimming towards it! He returned about an hour and a half later with so much excitement and this video. He told me later that it was one of the most incredible experiences and that seeing the eye of the whale so close was a bit terrifying.

On September 19, 2008 Heber turned the big 3-0 and I wanted to surprise him with a big party at a Mexican restaurant (his favorite kind of food!). I invited 30 closest friends and pretneded like I had nothing planned for the evening and we were just going to celebrate by ourselves. When he came home from work, I suggested that we should go out to dinner to a Mexican place nearby (the one where all the friends were waiting). For some reason that night Heber did NOT feel like Mexican food and I had to come up with all sorts of reasons to convince him to go there. He was really surprised to see everyone there and we had a really great night!

I don't remember him being sad about 30. He said 30 is the new 20! He was just so excited for what's ahead and so full of life! We had so many plans and he was looking forward to the amazing adventures that we were sure awaited!

Knowing Heber's adventerous spirit, a friend suggested that he should apply to be on Survivor. We had so much fun making this application video. One afternoon we drove out to China Walls, large cliffs on the South shore of Oahu, where I filmed the last shot - Heber jumping off of 40 feet cliffs. He did it at least ten times to get the perfect shot and I remember thinking to myself that he had no fear!
