Jack's Life as We Knew It

July 26, 2016

Jack L. Meyer, 85, was born on September 12, 1930 in Houston, Texas. He was the second son of Alma Agnes Meyer (nee Riser) and John Henry Meyer. After graduating from Milby High School in Houston, he attended the University of Texas at Austin before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.  One of the proudest times of his life was being a part of the team that developed the Terrier missile system. This was the very first surface-to-air missile that could successfully shoot down an airplane. While in the Marines, Jack met and married Elizabeth Anne (Dixie) Rothwell of England. They married July 17, 1951 and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

At the end of his enlistment, Jack and Dixie returned to the University of Texas at Austin where Jack graduated with a degree in electrical engineering.  He spent his career building large and high-rise buildings that changed the skyline of virtually every major city throughout the United States.  His most recognizable projects in Tesxas include the Astrodome, DFW Airport and Reunion Tower in Dallas. Overseas he helped build The Voice of America (VOA) Relay Station in Morocco.

Upon retirement, Jack and Dixie moved to San Diego, California where they lived for 23 wonderful years. They only recently returned to Texas to be closer to their two children, son, Dr. Robert Meyer and daughter, Marsi Beall.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Dixie of San Angelo, TX; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Louellen Meyer of San Angelo, TX; daughter, Marsi Beall of Richardson, TX; grandchildren Vic and Vivian Meyer; granddaughters Chelsi Haile and Payton Beall; and great grandson Ledger Telthorst. Jack was also survived by his beloved dachschunds Sam and Cody.
