Who is afraid of Pokey?

March 22, 2014

I am Alphonso, Pam's husband and Pokey's brother-in-law. My first experience with Pokey was back in 1981. Back then I was afraid of Pokey. I was afraid of him before I even met him. Actually I was afraid of both Pokey and his father James Howard. I was afraid of James Howard because I thought that he was going to find out that I had sneaked and married his daughter while she was still in college without telling him or any of the family. I was a stranger and I had literally stolen her. I had heard that James Howard had a shot gun because he liked to hunt rabbits and that he carried a "hawk bill" knife. And, I had also seen that he liked to drink liquor and cuss people out, so I was afraid that he was going to try to kill me if he found out about me and Pam. I was still living in Savannah, Pam was in Macon at school, and I had never met Pokey who was in Atlanta with the family. Chance would have it that Pokey answered the phone when the marriage license office called to speak to Pam, so Pokey found out our secret and I was terrified. I played it off like I wasn't scared when Pam told me the news. But when I scensed that she was really worried that of all people Pokey was unpredictable, I feared the worse. It turned out that when Pokey discovered how me and Pam were both afraid that he would tell, he thought the whole thing was funny. So, when Pokey and Pam were together with their family, Pokey would speak out in front of James Howard as though he was about to tell that Pam had sneaked off and got married, but he would only fake like he was about to tell, just to see Pam go into a panic, just so he could get a good laugh out of the whole thing. I learned back then that that was just the way Pokey was. He wouldn't do anything to harm anyone, but he would go to great measures to get a good laugh at your expense.
