Grandma Joyce loved her grandsons in a really BIG way. She took her grandson John to and from school for many years, all the way up to high school, even up till her passing. A fond memory of John's is sharing a love of music with his Grandma. After picking him up from school, Grandma Joyce would say, "John, find me a song!" The one she wanted him to play was Pumped Up Kicks, and John would dial it up on the iPod, and she would sing right along, usually with her own version of the lyrics. What a cool grandma! I love the fact that she wanted to find things that they could enjoy together... like In-and-Out burger :)
Joyce was the church clerk and we talked about a new membership directory for a looong time. Finally we made a form asking for any changes in member info from before. When we got a number of them back, Joyce entered them into a directory program she got for her computer. Techie that she was, her computer crashed and she could not retrieve the work she had done.
She brought the directory program to me and asked if I could enter it again. I live close to John's school and some mornings when she took him to school she would call me and ask "is coffee on". I told her if it wasn't, it would be by the time she got here. She always called and "which street do I turn on now?" So I would go out and meet her by the street.
We would talk about things we were reading or about the directory or new people at the church. We finally got the directory printed out and went to meet pastor to make foto copies at the church. Joyce found some pretty flower photos and we decided which to use for a cover. Then she came over while we put them all together. We were pretty pleased with the results. I don't know how many people realized that Joyce and I did all of the labor. She was amazing.
Every Thursday several women of the church would meet at Joyce's house to read the Bible and pray. Sometimes there would be only one other woman and sometimes as many as five others. No matter how many showed up, we would read, picking up where we left off the week before.
When someone asked, "Why only women", the answer was that we could ask questions or discuss things that were relevant to us. Some things men just did not get. Joyce kept a prayer book to which we added names as we heard of someone who needed prayer. After reading, we would each add to the prayer as we went around the circle. No one was ever left out. Our children, family, friends, co-workers, and even strangers were prayed over.
We had read through the Old Testiment and are in Matthew now. It took five years to get that far. We were not afraid to stop and discuss anything we read. Joyce kept almost every translation of the Bible and we would use several to help understand. She also ordered books (or had books in her library) as we came to a new chapter or book of the Bible.
We have discussed continuing the Thursday night Women's Prayer group. I know that Joyce would like that. It would be "wonderful".
