obituary

January 21, 2014
Lucille Wong Frederick,70, passed away on December 24, 2013 at Cornerstone Hospice House in The Villages, FL.  Lucie was born on June 4, 1943 in Szechuan, China to H.F. Wang, MD (a surgeon) and Edith Thompson Wong, R.N. (an Episcopal Medical Missionary). She lived in China for one year during the Japanese bombing.  Her mother escaped with her over the Himalayas to New Delhi, India and boarded an American Troop Carrier to Los Angeles.  The ship was diverted to New York City where they found competition stiff to secure train seats to L.A.  After two years in L.A., they rejoined her father in Tai Pan, Taiwan where her brother Richard was born in 1947.  Her family returned to California in 1950 just in time for the centennial celebration of California’s statehood.   Lucie graduated from Duarte High School in Los Angeles in 1961.  She attended Chatman College in Southern California and graduated from California State University at Sacramento in 1966 with a Home Economics degree.  She taught preschool for several years and spent 12 years as an Air Force wife stationed in Delaware twice, Taiwan, and California.  Her son, Steven Edwin Montgomery, was born in 1968 in Delaware.   Lucie met Stephen C. Frederick in Dover, DE and they married on April 7, 1978.  They relocated to the Wilmington area in November 1978.  She was employed in Ethan Allen stores and Winterthur Museum and Gardens.  She retired to The Villages, FL in 2005 after 23 years at Winterthur where she initiated the decorating services using their reproductions and assisting clients with integrating reproductions with American Antiques.  Her rooms were published in Colonial Homes and she was interviewed on Good Morning America.   She enjoyed playing Mah-Jongg and word games, golfing, reading, and kayaking. In their later years, Lucie and her husband Stephen were also enthusiastic and dedicated students of mindfulness meditation, Buddhism and Buddhist studies.  These earnest and shared pursuits brought them much joy and meaning as well as comfort during this difficult last year.   In addition to her parents and stepsister, she was predeceased by her husband, Stephen on May 28, 2013.  She is survived by her son, Steven and wife, Mary, of Lomita, CA; brother, Dr. Richard Wong and wife, Leslie, of Portland, OR; stepbrother, Michael Wang and wife, Lisa, of Corta Madera, CA; stepdaughter, Aimee Jane Frederick and her partner, Greg Montagnino, of Point Arena, CA; stepdaughter Cecily Frederick and son-in-law, Steven Glinberg, of Madison, WI; four grandchildren:  Adalaide Hawk and Grant Frederick Montagnino, Mara Joy and Anabelle Claire Glinberg; sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne and Richard Iovino of Harbeson, DE; sister-in-law, Jeannette Whipp of Fall River, MA; nieces and nephews; and many dear friends who were so supportive during her illness.
