Her Life
July 12, 2012

Maggie was born on March 10, 1944 in Scotland Neck, North Carolina to the late Catherine Kearney Clarke and Norman McKenzie Clarke Sr.  She was called to rest on July 5, 2012 at the Center of Hope, Scotch Plains, New Jersey.

Maggie attended the Halifax County Public Schools and graduated from Brawley High School in 1964. At an early age she was nurtured in the faith at Union Baptist Sunday School and Mary’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church where she actively participated in the choir and other youth programs.

As a teenagers, Maggie loved to dance and listen to R&B music broadcasted from WLAC - Nashville or Teenage Frolic from the Raleigh area. Upon graduation from Brawley High School, Maggie moved away to Baltimore, MD and then later to Newark, NJ. For about five years she worked for Mattel Toys prior to starting a family and marriage to Jimmy Reid.

Due to health reasons, she returned to North Carolina in 1976 to the Chapel Hill community and a few years she moved to Daytona Beach, FL before returning to Chapel Hill. Maggie became a member of First Church of God, Carrboro, North Carolina where she initiated outreach programs and served on the usher’s board.

Maggie received CNA training and became a primary caretaker for her dearest friend, Sallie Johnson Stepp. Making deep friendship is the hallmark of Maggie’s faith. She also adopted Thelma Jones as a very close friend and sister. They travelled together at most family reunions, vacations, and holiday gatherings.

She became a member of New Covenant Christian Church prior to its name change to Anointed Christian Church. Maggie was a telephone evangelist and she loved to talk, and talk, and talk. She could talk to everybody and when she called - you heard this - Heeeeeyyyyyyy!

She was the coordinator for every Rainbow and Harvest Tea.  She organized and planned the Women’s Fellowship programs.

Food was the center-piece of her leadership and recipes were relished and coveted by all. She was a wonderful mother and grandma and these duties led to her relocation to New Jersey in 2007 to be with family and grands. Shelby, Sydney, and Cameron energized Maggie but she loved to spend summers in North Carolina.
