I Wonder...

November 4, 2012

I drive by a high school and I wonder if you marched for Homecoming.  Did you go to prom? Did you play an instrument, a sport?  Did you graduate?

It's Valentine's Day and I wonder if you ever had a secret crush.  Were you in love.  Were you married?   Were you miserable in a relationship?  Were you lonely?

It's the summer and I wonder if you loved the ocean, as I do.  It's fall and I wonder if you loved the crisp air, or apple pie.  It's winter and I wonder if you ski.  I don't.  The boots hurt.  I sled, though.  Did you?  It's the Spring and I think of new beginnings.  I mourn for you.

When I see my children I wonder if you had children.  Did you want children?  Were you happy as a child?  My daughter is looking at colleges.  Did you attend college?  Did you have a job?

I'm at a winery and I wonder if you were old enough to drink the wine I just ordered.

I wonder about so many things.  I wonder what you looked like.  What color were your eyes?  Were you a spiritual person?  What was your nationality, your ethnicity, your world?

What was your disposition.  Did you like to laugh?  I love to laugh.  Did you find joy in little things.  Was your glass half empty or half full?

Did you suffer in life?  Did you suffer in death?

There are so many things I don't know.  I don't know your name. You are part of me.  Your spirit lives on through me.  I'll never stop wondering.
