Rahul Chopra Honorary Fund in support of Blue Leadership Collaborative
Rahul cared deeply about representation in Democratic politics. He knew that training diverse leaders who are culturally competent to take their careers to the next level is one of the best ways to give campaigns a competitive edge. We are proud to share that we have established a memorial fund in Rahul’s name to support Blue Leadership Collaborative. BLC hires, trains, and retains diverse leaders to manage Democratic campaigns.

Obituary

Rahul Chopra of Washington, DC, passed away unexpectedly on March 11th.

Kind, hilarious, and deeply irreverent, Rahul’s laughter will remain in our hearts forever. His energy, optimism and passion in work and life will be sorely missed by his friends, coworkers, and family all around the world.

Rahul was born in Vancouver, Canada, on October 24th, 1991, to Vijay Paul and Abha (Jindal) Chopra, and grew up in Sunnyvale, California. Rahul scarcely knew life without his brother Jay, his companion since the age of twenty months. Despite crying when he realized Jay was a permanent member of the family, the two grew to be inseparable, often fondly called “the Chopra Brothers” for their zest, synergy and collaboration.

Although Rahul was born with a visual impairment, he never let it limit his potential. He had an innate sense of curiosity and a keen sense of observation that led to him becoming one of the top political operatives and researchers in the Democratic Party.

Rahul always had a strong interest in politics and society. In high school, he was captain of the speech and debate team, and won several awards for public speaking, even delivering one of the two commencement addresses at his graduation. He was nominated to attend California Boys State where he was not only successfully elected city judge but also voted best judge for that summer.

Rahul took the next step by attending UC Irvine, where he majored in political science. Rahul’s love for policy and advocacy knew no bounds both inside and outside of the classroom; in addition to making the Dean’s Honors list multiple times, Rahul was also active in numerous extracurricular programs that balanced his love for continuous professional development and social enrichment. From bhangra performances to student government he was known across a campus of more than 20,000. He left the day after graduation for Washington D.C. to participate in an internship program.

Coming to our nation’s capital, Rahul was determined to build a career that would make the world a fairer and more just place. Starting out as an intern for Dianne Feinstein and then Mike Honda, he went on to work in the U.S. Senate, American Bridge, across various senate campaigns and multiple cycles at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Rahul's joy throughout all of these jobs was a desire to build a better society and to mentor the next generation of researchers – always with a knowing smile or kind word.

In 2022, Rahul served as Senator Mark Kelly’s research director. He was proud to play a central role in helping Senator Kelly prevail in one of the most competitive Senate races in the country, winning by nearly five points, and allowing Democrats to protect their majority in the Senate.

Most recently, Rahul served as the research director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, where he utilized his encyclopedic knowledge of congressional politics and rueful love for the House’s chaos. Rahul was incredibly proud of the diverse and talented team of 40 he built at the DCCC and took constant joy in seeing them grow and succeed.

Quick to smile, Rahul was warm-hearted to all. He was kind when nobody was looking. He was instinctively focused on those around him--the kind of friend who, if he saw you on the street, he’d drop whatever he was doing to say hi and check in. He did it with his kindness. He did it with tenderness. He did it with his signature laugh that friends could recognize immediately across the room. This is what set Rahul apart, and because of that he had a wide circle of loved ones and admirers.

Rahul loved a good time, good food, good conversation, and all things Star Wars. He truly lived each day to the fullest. Rahul was a beacon of joy in our lives.

We will miss him dearly. Rahul was taken from us too soon due to undiagnosed diabetes and complications from pneumonia. We will always carry his memory with us.

I met Raul in the summer of 2013 when we interned for Senator Feinstein together and lived in the UCDC dorms. I will always remember Rahul’s sense of humor, infectious warm, and insatiable energy. In the competitive world of DC political interns and during a period of life when I felt unsure of myself and excited for my future, Rahul was a positive force and someone I will remember forever. I was able to visit him about 5 years ago to catch up in DC and remember being so proud of the life he built for himself. — Jane Koch (Huson)

Rahul, that little boy with a cheeky smile, love for food, the very special connection with Jay and that uncanny ability to hear a whispered conversation across a crowded room. That's how I will forever remember you Rahul. In this very short time, you touched many lives in countless ways. You left behind a legacy of laughter and cherished memories. Rest in Peace young man. Abha, your son made you proud.  My condolences to the Chopra and Jindal family.

Rahul, I am still in shock that you're are no longer here. I will miss our meet-ups especially when I was living in NYC and you in DC. Back then, when we first started our careers, I would not hesitate to travel to see you! Wherever we met up, a bar or a restaurant for fancy pasta, seeing you was like time never passed. And that one time touring DC with Tashi, my husband Casey and his friend Richie, it was so fun!

Every time I saw you it felt like being home. You just got me. It did not matter how long it was since we last saw each other, we could always pick up talking smack about our college days and D Sig, the way we would, and we were so good at it! And you would tell me about your work, and how DC never rests because you had work, but then you had networking events too! You were always so busy, but always made time for me. Thank you.

I'm going to miss your banter. The tone of how you speak and your laugh.

I want to thank you most for supporting me even from a distance here in Cali. After I gave birth to my baby, you told me I am "doing a great job as a mom". So many times, no matter what that I was "doing a great job". I can tell you have an amazing mother, one I would hope to be like because of how incredible you are! (Much respect to you and your family!)

It's amazing you can provide so much relief, affirmation, and reassurance in the difficult times, with just one message, after a while of not seeing eachother. You are the definition of a good friend.

I was so looking forward to you meeting Lourdes... i wanted to tell you how she loves Charmander and the way she talks now she sounds like a Pikachu. And tell you i am taking her to see an eye specialist and all that. And i learned from you, that my role will be to help her combat ableism and reframe how she thinks of herself and that she will never be limited in what she can do. I will make sure she knows that she can do anything! And pursue her dreams the way you always did.

One day you will meet her, and I will see you again. I love you and miss you! There's no one like you! *tight hug!*

Rahul,, I have a fond memory from a long time ago when you and your brother adapted the fellowship of the ring into a play for all of us kids at Jeena (nerds, the both of you :-) ). You cast me as orc #2, and both of you laughed when I delivered your stage direction *snorts* out loud.

I feel lucky I got to meet and spend time with you and Jay when we were kids. So sorry to hear you are no longer with us in the physical. Sending you, Jay, Abha aunty, Paul uncle, and the rest of your loved ones so much love. <3

I had the good fortune to meet Rahul for the first time during covid. Little did I know it would be my only time with him. In the short span of an evening dinner, I remember him being so affable, kind and witty. His gregarious presence filled the room with laughter and his passion for equity resonated with mine. I sincerely hope we meet again in another lifetime and I know we will effortlessly pick up from where we left off. Until then, see ya later and rest in peace you beautiful soul, Rahul xx

So heartbroken by this news, and for all who loved Rahul. He was one of the first friends I made when I moved to DC, and I will forever be grateful for his openness, empathy, and humor. He introduced me to so many incredible people, invited me to concerts, suggested new restaurants, and even when I moved away he was always making time to check-in and schedule chats. No matter what was going on, Rahul found a way to bring laughter and ease to a conversation. His warmth and kindness will always be remembered.

I am so saddened to hear of Rahul’s passing. We attended UCI together and met each other freshman year in the dorms. He was such a kind, funny, and intelligent person. We (Trevor and I) always joked that we were waiting for Rahul to take over the world (in the best way). Sending our thoughts and love to Rahul’s family. Rest in peace my friend.

Rahul was one of my first bosses when I started in political research and I couldn’t have asked for a better one. Not long after meeting and knowing that we’d both be on the IE team, he reached out to get to know me and what I wanted to do in research. I learned so much from working with him. He was so supportive of my professional and personal goals, empowering and encouraging me in the workplace and writing me a letter of recommendation when I applied for graduate school. I could always count on Rahul for good advice or a good time. I will miss him.

In Loving Memory of our Friend

I have so many amazing memories with Rahul - from hanging out and going out in DC all the time in our early 20s (see blurry cell phone photo), to celebrating weddings together in our early 30s - there has never been a dull moment with Rahul. I'll always remember countless brunches and dinners as we explored DC from 2014-2015, driving to visit CMU during Jay's senior year, going to see Trevor Noah in NJ in 2017, and celebrating Dillon & Anna's wedding together last April. And I want to echo what was written about his 'signature laugh' which I'll never forget - it'll always make me smile. Rahul had such a positive impact on so many lives, and he'll always be in our hearts. We'll miss him so, so much.
