Ghost of Christmas Present

November 5, 2013

One of my favorite stories to tell on my dad was this.  For Christmas, one of my favorite decorations was the candles dad would put in our windows all around the house, including my bedroom.  I would keep those candles on all night and fall asleep with them on.  One holiday season, it may have been New Year's Eve, mom and dad went out and left my brother and I at home.  My brother was old enough to be our "babysitter," so it was just the two of us. I had fallen asleep in my bedroom and my brother was asleep downstairs - and when my brother is asleep - nothing can wake him.  I, on the other hand, was a lighter sleeper, which turned out to be a good thing for my parents.  It turned out that they had forgotten to take the house key with them and my brother had dutifully followed my parents instructions to lock the doors while they were gone, so they were locked out.  Unfortunately, though, this meant that they had to wake me somehow.  My dad found his way up onto the garage roof, and then on the front porch's roof, up to my window and started knocking on it until I awoke.  What to my wondering eyes did I see, but my dad staring at me through the candlelit window with a nice synthetic orange glow saying, "Jul!  Wake Up!!  Open the door!  We forgot the key!"  I ambled downstairs and opened the door for my parents and all was right with the world again.  But it sure was startling to see this glowing orange version of my dad's face pressed up against my bedroom window frantically banging on it to wake me up!
