Without a doubt, Verne is one of the nicest people I have ever met.  Playing golf with him was such a pleasure and I enjoyed everything I ever did with him.

I am sure he will be sorely missed by many people including me.

My condolences on hearing of Verne's passing. As a Beloiter he was always supportive of his alma mater when I was the football coach here. When times ocurred he would recall the good times as a student and the rivalry we had when Kenosha played my Beloit teams. He will be missed. May God be with you during this time of mourning.  John Heineke

Great coach

I always remembered when the Bradford tennis team had meets away from home, Coach schmale would drive his car with many of us in it. In those days many trips were taken in personal cars (1959-1961). Coach had this old car that he loved and we were always worried about making it to our destination.  Coach would just laugh when we expressed doubts . We were jammed in the car like sardines and he only had tiny windows to open. Only one time a problem -- dead battery . We had car jumped. I learned a lot about life and sports from coach schmale. I still have some wonderful pictures of him with our team in those years and news clippings.

Rather than one story, I'd like to share several memories I have of my Grandpa.

I had the amazing opportunity to travel across Europe with my Grandpa. I will never forget how caring he was to me and my Grandma during that trip. Everynight he would come to our room (he was sharing a different room with my uncle) and check on us, say goodnight and give my Grandma a goodnight kiss. He was up for anything while we were traveling and never complained, even when we got lost in the streets of Paris and ended up walking over four miles to get back to our hotel!

My grandparents made every moment my sister and I spent with them special. Often times, even when we were very young, they would bring us out to fancy restaurants where we would have kiddie cocktails and dance with my Grandpa after dinner.

My son and daughter spent some special time with their GG (great grandpa) Verne this past winter. When we would visit him, he would be sitting very upright in his chair and would smile and watch the kids play. Inga would bring her GG Verne games and place them on his lap where they would play with them together. He would hold her hand and say sweet things to her.

My Grandpa had a calm, subtle, strong presence that was a great balance to my Grandma's intensity. I'll remember his big, strong hands and his debonair demeanor. He was also classicly cool in a way you just don't see anymore. He was a gentleman right until the end, telling me how lovely and wonderful I was everytime I would visit.

We love you very much Grandpa and will remember, admire and miss you forever.

Love,
Megan, Jake, Ivan and Inga
