His Life

His Final Journey

December 26, 2014
When diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, E.V. was given six months to live.  With the help of chemotherapy, visiting nurses, and the long-term care of his wife Nancy and son Charlie he lived significantly longer.  His care was also greatly assisted by Charlie's partner Debbie Odom, Charlie's daughter Nicole, and family friend Lane Morgan.  He passed  on December 5th, 2014 at Presbyterian Hospital of Rockwall surrounded by Nancy, Charlie and his youngest son Barry.

The family is extremely grateful to the skilled care and great humanity of the emergency room staff at Presbyterian Hospital.

The Return to Texas

December 26, 2014

In 2008, E.V. and Nancy returned to Texas to live very near their son Charlie and granddaugher Nicole.  E.V. missed Colville, but made the best of living again in Texas.  He enjoyed sitting out on the porch, working out at the YMCA, keeping up with current events, and spending time with his family.  He was in good health until a series of set backs started in 2012 that culminated with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2013.

Colville

December 26, 2014

In 1993, E.V. and Nancy arrived in Colville.  There E.V. found a place that suited his sensibilities.  He loved the cool summers, the rolling hills and the small town atmosphere.  He also loved being a grandfather to Stacey's son, Jacob.  While living in Colville, he started and was a co-owner of United Country Real Estate of Colville.  He loved being in the real estate business as it helped him indulge his lifelong love of architecture.  He spent one year as the President of the local real estate association.  In all, he and Nancy spent 15 years in Colville.

Moving & A Health Scare

December 26, 2014

After living a couple of years at Greer's Ferry lake, the family began a series of moves that would take them across Arkansas, New Mexico, and Texas.  Most of that time, E.V. worked as a district sales manager for CPS Corporation.  CPS focused on sales of giftwrap to department stores and other retailers.  Near the end of the family's stay in Richardson, TX,  E.V. underwent brain surgery to remove some growths.  It was successful and he had no recurrance.

With all children grown and on their own, E.V. and Nancy then moved temporarily to Houston, Texas.  They followed this a couple of years later by a move to Colville, WA where E.V.'s youngest daughter, Stacy, lived.

Mid-Life

December 26, 2014

After returning to Marianna, E.V. was reintroduced to Nancy Lewis through his childhood friend Richard (Dick) Lewis who was Nancy's younger brother.  Nancy had also attended T.A. Futrall High School.  Nancy and E.V. married June 30th, 1968.  The ceremony was performed by the Reverend Jim Randle who was a high school friend of E.V.'s from Marianna.  Nancy had a son from a previous marriage, Charles (Charlie) Jones and she was also temporarily the guardian of Rick and Kay Lewis.  After marrying, E.V. and Nancy had one son together, Barry Crossno.  For a time, this made seven children under one roof.

The family stayed in Marianna until the NAACP boycott of Marianna (1971-72) made their three businesses unviable.  They closed the businesses and moved to Greer's Ferry, AR.  While the boycott had been emotionally difficult, financially damaging and at times dangerous for members of the family, E.V. later asserted that the loss of the businesses was worth it if it helped advance civil rights.

Early Adult Life

December 26, 2014

E.V. left Marianna to attend Mississippi College and then transferred to Mississipi State where he moonlighted as a DJ at a Jazz radio station.  While at Mississipi state, he met and married Jan Cargill.  Together, E.V. and Jan had three children Lisa Crossno (now Muenow), William Crossno, and Stacy Crossno (now Hofman).  After marrying Jan, he entered the United States Air Force for a four year enlistment.  In the Air Force he was promoted to Staff Sargeant, was part of Air Force intelligence services, was part of a unit that tested the security of strategic air command bases, and became an instructor.  He was stationed out of Keesler Air Force base in Biloxi, MS. After leaving the Air Force he went to work for Playtex Corporation as a salesman.  During these years, he, Jan and their children lived in Jackson, MS.  E.V. and Jan divorced in the mid-1960s. After the divorce, he returned to Marianna, AR.

Childhood

E.V. Crossno, Jr. was born to E.V. (Jack) Crossno, Sr. and Mattie Elizabeth Miles on August 14, 1935 in Memphis, TN.  He was raised in Palestine, AR where he attended 1st grade and then moved to nearby Marianna, AR where he finished high school.  He played the tuba in the T.A. Futrall High School marching band where he was co-captain his senior year.  He also enjoyed participating in class plays.  As a teenager he spent many hours working on his father's farm as he put it, "watching the sun rise and set over the steering wheel of a John Deere tractor."  It was also during this time that he developed an appreciation for jazz.  He played in a small jazz ensemble associated with the high school band which was directed by John Henley.
