The Loss of a Good Man

September 14, 2015

I had the distinct honer of knowing and working with Jim since 1998.  We were both new to the County at that time.  One of the key things that got my attention early and has always been present was JIm's commitment to his work.  There was no question that Jim took great pride in his commiment and integrity toward doing the job, and doing it right.  Yes, Jim could be a little "gruff" at times, but deep-down inside it was because he cared.

In the later years I had the opportunity to work more directly with Jim, to get a better sense of his personality and what was important to him.  What clearly stood-out for me was his commitment to his wife and family.  Whenever Jim talked about them you would see his eyes light-up, his chest fill-out, and that special smile would come across his face.

To Jim's family, always know he was a man of integrity and character.  Enjoy the fond memories that you all shared.

I met Jim shortly after starting my career in the Parks Dept. with Kitsap County in 2001.  For the next 14 years we worked together on too many projects to list but it's safe to say that we shared the absolute joy and pride in completing projects for our "customers", both the public and County employees.  Although we had our differences of opinion on a regular basis and had many heated "discussions" the outcome was mutually agreeable to both of us.  Jim was definitely old school and had strong opinions about the way things should be done.  He drove me crazy at times but I'm sure it was mutual. He had the gruff manner and the voice to match but underneath all that was a very caring man, especially where his family was concerned. I will never forget his extraordinary strength and work ethic he exhibited these last three years as he battled serious health issues.  He loved his job and took such pride in finding creative ways to get things done with rarely enough budget.  His "filing" system can not be described but he never failed to find any document that I asked for.  Rest in peace, Jim, you fought a tremendous battle.   I will miss you.
