Her Life

The daughter of the late Benjamin D. and Carolyn Young Henry, Mrs. Merritt was born in Willisville, AR.

She obtained her Bachelors degree from Arkansas A M & N College and her Masters degree from Columbus State University. She was retired from the Muscogee County Schools as a classroom educator, her final tenure at Benning Hills Elementary School. She was a member of Holsey Chapel CME Church where she served as Vice President of the Lay Council, Director of the Board of Christian Education, Pastor's Aide Board, Mass and Sanctuary Choirs, and with Missionary Society. She also taught Youth Bible Study and Catechism. 


Following retirement from the school system, Mrs. Merritt continued serving as a tutor. 


Survivors include: her husband of 50 years, 1SG (Ret.) Ernest Merritt; three sons, Karl L. Merritt, Sr., Stanley W. Merritt (Shelley) and Michael L. Merritt; six grandchildren, Andrenise Gibson (Edzra), Autumn Merritt, Jocelyn Smith (Germele), Michael Merritt, Karl Merritt, Jr., Quentin King; great grandchildren, Amaya Smith, Alonah Smith, Avery Gibson, Sonai Smith, Auston Merritt and Elijah Gibson; a sister, Irene Green (Henry); a brother, John Henry; a host nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
