His Life

Peter's Legacy

September 21, 2014

Peter is known for his gentle soul, his ever-giving spirit, and his unwavering loyalty to his friends and family.  He has touched the lives of many people over the years and he holds all of his friends, family and colleagues very dear.

Peter was born in Guangzhou in 1946 and spent most of his childhood in Hong Kong.  He embodies many of the traditional ideals of his generation who grew up in this era, such as his fierce devotion to family.  Peter moved to North Carolina to finish a Master's degree at North Carolina State University in Textile Sciences.  From analyzing cotton, to fishing, to singing Elvis Presley music, Peter quickly grew accustomed to life in the South as well.

He met his eventual wife Monica in the late 1970s and they married in 1983.  His son, Alex, was born a year later.  Some of our fondest memories as a family have been our travels to places all over the world together.  In 1993, our family moved to Irvine, California where we currently reside.  Over the years we have fallen deeply in love with life here in Southern California.

2002 was a pivotal year for our family when Peter was initially diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer.  It was a very difficult time during which we had to re-evaluate our priorities in life.  First and foremost, we realized that we took each other for granted at times and that we had to put aside distractions in life to spend more quality time with each other.  We felt tremendously blessed when Peter's disease went into remission the following year and he had a full recovery.  During this second lease in life, he was able to see Alex walk two graduations, as well as many of his loved ones pass key milestones in their life.  He again resumed his traveling and vacations, but his highly anticipated Mediterranean cruise & family reunion was unfortunately interrupted by some bad news.

It was a chilly morning in 2011, when we found out his cancer had recurred.  Ever the strong fighter, Peter underwent another round of radiation and chemotherapy.  He completed a clinical trial at Baylor for an adjunctive immunotherapy.  Even during moments of pain and difficulty, Peter would always ask how other people were doing.  He always put other people's needs in front of his own.  Peter wanted a comfortable and dignified end, and thanks to the powers that be, he died peacefully in his sleep on September 21, 2014 around 3 am.

We will always remember his legacy and we would like to celebrate all the happy moments in his life.

The slideshow from his reception will be available online afterward.
