Good things come to good people...there is no doubt why Werner had so many good friends.

This website was created in memory of our loved one, Werner Tobler.  Given he did not want a service, we felt this website would be a good way of sharing stories and photos.  You are welsome to post stories (under the stories tab) and photos so his friends and grand daughters can learn more about his wonderful life, friends and relatives.  Feel free to poke some fun at him...he would like that.

If you would like us to post something for you, please email Lisa.

"Ingrid and I are very sorry to hear of Werner's passing.  He was such a hard worker and I always enjoyed his stories of fishing on the Revelstoke Dam. I will always remember the times we went x-country skiing with some of the other employees from Armstrong cheese and some of the wives up at Larch Hills and Silver Star.  He always had a big sandwich for lunch to enjoy! We will all miss him and know he is remembered fondly by his co-workers.  Please contact us if there is anything we can do to help you Lisa at this difficult time.

"Ingrid and I are saddened by Werner's passing. I worked with Werner for almost twenty years and he was a great leader in the Cheese Plant and always did more than his share. In the coffee room and on the floor he had many interesting stories of fishing -Hammer Lake and Revelstoke Dam and up north with Patrick. But most fondly we will remember the cross- country ski trips up Silver Star with our wives and others from the Plant as he lead us down Silver Qeen trail and then stopping to eat one of his big sandwichs. Werner, you are missed."

"Hi Lisa, Patrick and Family.  Wow what to say as there is much to tell.  We have had so many good times with Werner and Lisa.  Especially when we were camping together.  We would all listen to Werner's life stories as we were gathered around the nightly campfires.  Of course we had to taste his wine and have a piece of cheese. He had the most incredible stories. I especially like the story about his working in the sugar cane fields in Australia.

Werner was always more concerned about everyone else rather than himself.  A very humble man and a very generous man. He would give the shirt off his back to someone in need.

Werner took great joy in creating the best cheese in the world. He was proud of his accomplishments as "head cheese-maker" in the numerous awards he received.

He loved his life and he loved his family.  He was very proud of Patrick and found great joy and  contentment in his life with Lisa.

We will miss the stories around the campfire but never forget the laughs and fun that we had together."

"Dear Lisa,
We remember Werner as a person who appreciated so much what other people did, whereas he contributed so much more himself for the community.
It is only 10 years ago we first met Werner. It seems we know you both much longer.
While increasing the number of farm buildings around our farm-stead, you both would stop by and Werner would try to talk me (Marc) into the red walls for the out-buildings, to go well with the melcher green roof. I did listen to him, but never followed up on that advice and kept them brown... It remained the basis of a pleasant banter we carried on.
I learned water-witching from him, an "art" I never believed in and now perform regularly myself...
Werner may be gone from the neighborhood, from your life, but no-one will take away the fond memories we have of him.
Liefs en sterkte!
Sietje en Marc"

"One of the truly wonderful people in the world and I was lucky enough to have him as a neighbour for 30 + years. So kind & caring. He built the most beautiful piece of paradise here on earth for his family & treasured cows. I am so grateful to have know him and for him sharing his pasture with my horses. Magoo and Maddie (dogs) also loved their adventures over there as they never knew when Werner might have a treat for them. Loved our many conversations and water pump lessons. I was not ready for this. I will miss you dear friend. RIP Werner

"Dear Lisa & Pat
Our hearts are saddened by the news that Werner is no longer with us. When we received the request to send our thoughts of Werner in an email, our words were the same from us as they were when we talked to our son Dwight.
Werner was a very genuine, honest, compassionate neighbour. Whatever he did, he put a lot of thought into doing it. He always took pride in what he did, whether it was cheese making, cattle rearing, crop harvesting, or holiday planning.
Werner will always be with us in our memories. From thoughts of him taking pride in your garden to trying to farm the wet lands of your place. From spending time talking over a few drinks to discussing places the two of you had been , to the places you planned on visiting.
So as we go on in life without him we know that something will happen to cause us to think of Werner and the times we have had together.
Bill & Darlene Corbett"

We talked, ate, swam and toured together for the rest of our time there.Since then we have enjoyed their welcoming hospitality many times and have shared in their joys of the grandchildren and family times which they fondly recounted. We will sadly miss Werner.

"I will always be grateful for having know Werner Tobler. Many of my fondest memories growing up on Stepney Road include him. Learning to skate on his pond in the winter, riding his cows in the fields in summer, his stories of how the robins can hear the worms under the ground in his garden, he and Lisa taking me fishing, visits to the sausage maker in Summerland, and of course, the warm cheese curds brought to our house straight from the factory. He was one of the most giving and thoughtful people I have ever known. I will miss his strong wine and even stronger cheese, his enthusiastic companionship when fishing and camping and his sincere joy in being a part of my life. I am truly sorry that my own child will never meet this man, who played such a wonderful role in my life. He will truly be missed."

"I will always remember Werner fondly.  He was a great cheese maker, a thoughtful farmer, and an excellent wine maker.  I remember walking the side lines during our son's soccer games, and yelling ourselves hoarse at their hockey games, skating on the pond at the farm, and especially hearing him and Lise laugh.  He had the most contagious laugh!!
He was so proud of his son, Patrick, and of his lovely granddaughters.
I believe the reason our boys turned into such wonderful fathers is because of the terrific example they got from their Dads.
The last time I saw Werner, He and Lisa came to Chilliwack last summer  to pick blackberries to make wine.  We picked 70 lbs.!
Rest in Peace Werner and have a glass with Bill!"

"We will fondly remember Werner the happy 'rancher, cheese maker, chef and winery brew master.' I will not forget our first visit to the farm - finding the place and crossing the homemade log bridge to get to the house. We marvelled at the excellent garden and being welcomed by several cats. Werner was proud of his barn, calves and hay bales in the back.

He also enjoyed his camper travels and his stopovers at our cabin enroute to Whitehorse. One evening we sat out on the front deck and he reminisced about 'the olden days.'  He told us about his youth and 'seeking his fortune' - his Australian venture. From Switzerland to Melbourne was quite a distance for any young venturous man indeed.
Werner loved the Yukon. He talked about 'north of '60' all the time and was always wanting to venture north. He definitely maintained that 'venturing northern spirit.'

Carole's Mom and Dad loved to visit Armstrong. She flirted with Werner and they enjoyed great food. Papa always wanted 'seconds' when served Werner's brew and Granny would quietly scold Pa for being so thirsty. It was quite a fun evening visiting the Ranch.

We will always remember our fond days with Werner and Lisa.

"Hard to accept that Werner's gone and we'll never hear his laugh again.  Head thrown back, guffawing, eyes twinkling.  He was so smart on so many subjects.  And so kind.  When my father died in 2003, Werner made a lovely birdfeeder for me, came over, and installed it.  To this day, every day when I refill the "Werner feeder" I think of him.  And always will."

I feel so sad for you Lise, that you have to miss him so soon.
You are in my prayers, and I wish you much love and strength."

"I have known Werner for as long as I have had memories.  Lise is my Godmother and Werner and Lise were often at our home, or we were visiting them at their farm in Armstrong. He and Lise have been a part of all the pivotal parts of my life, confirmation, graduation, my wedding etc.   When I think back, the memories I have of Werner, many of them are memories from being at Werner and Lise’s farm:  as a young child I was always excited to go to the farm and climb on the hay bails, walking around the fields to see the cows with Werner, walking in his big rubber boots, warning me not to step in the cow patties; looking down at the pigs in their sty; skating on their pond in the winter; pointing out turtles along the stream and ponds on their property; Werner proudly showing us his bird sanctuary that he made in one field and pointing out a Heron that would hang out in it; Werner explaining how he took care of the newborn calves; and Werner warning me about the electric fence and laughing at me when I touched it.

It was a highlight going to the farm and as I grew older, I grew to appreciate all of the hard work and love he put into his land and his cows..   I always thought it was really cool that Werner was a cheese maker and I loved hearing him talk about his job at Armstrong cheese and vividly remember him showing us his trophies for making award winning cheeses (to this day, I always think of Werner when I buy Armstrong cheese from the store!).

Werner had the best laugh, which was the same, even as he grew older. Even as I grew up, moved away to Edmonton and started my own family - Werner was always happy to see us and would greet us with a booming “Hey, Melanie how are ya?” and would give me a warm hug.  He always would ask how we were doing and I appreciated his genuine interest and care about us.  It was fun to watch him play with our kids, Naomi, Dahlia and David and from seeing that, I knew he was an amazing Grandfather.  Brooke and Kate, your Opa always talked about you when I saw him and I knew he loved you very much. He would show me pictures that he had on his camera with pride.  Patrick, I remember him telling me about the work you were doing, in BC and then up in the Yukon; about your family and the life you had up there.  He was so proud of you.  Lise, I loved how you and Werner would tease each other and laugh so much together; you were such a sweet couple. Werner, I love you very much and I will miss you.  I will bring my children to your farm to tell them about you and the memories I have.  When I think of you, I’ll picture you in your jeans and t-shirt, with a baseball cap, outside on your farm, laughing.  We love you.

Lise, Patrick, Robin, Brooke and Kate - our hearts are so sad for you.  We pray that you find comfort in the many memories you have of Werner.  We are praying for you and send our love from Edmonton. God bless you. Love, Melanie (Alan, Naomi, Dahlia and David)."
