The Ament’s were and still are my number 2 family. I was 3 when we moved next door to them on good old Glen Drive. Darrell worked for the city off Anaheim Blvd. I remember going to his office and then watching all the Ringling Brothers Circus animals came off the train next to his office. It was so exciting watching the animals start their walk to the Convention Center. I always felt like we were VIP, because of Darrell’s office was right there and we always had a spot to watch from. One day he brought home the new TV video system, PONG!! He set it up and let all us kids play it for hours and hours. We thought it was the coolest thing ever! Todd and I had a little business adventure, selling avocados. But, we couldn’t reach them all. So, Darrell having that engineering ability, made us the first avocado picker. A hoe, 2 wooden broom handles and a bucket! It worked perfectly! He should’ve patent that!!! Thanks for taking me camping every Easter to the beach too!!! I love you my brothers from another Troy, Todd and Tim. Thank you for sharing your dad with me. I love you all and I’m sorry for your loss, our loss

I was the first foreign exchange student living with Darrell and Rosie (Glen Dr, Anaheim), and the year was 1973. It was a fantastic time in my life. We kept contact for many years. We met many times in Sweden and in the US after that. I was very much part of the surprice get-together and party we did in June 1990 (Darrell's and Rosie's 50th Birthday).
Darrell and I had close contact for many year, however we lost contact the last years (I tried contacting him but understand he was sick).
We have had so many moments, so much fun, done a lot of good work together.
Most of all I have a lot of good memories going back 47 years!
I will cherish all this for the rest of my life!
Rest in Peace, Darrell!

Thank you for sharing this difficult time with all of us who love you all so much. My memories of the 60s and 70s are the best part of my life. Our neighborhood was like no other, and as neighbors my family could not have had a more incredible family to share time with. You guys are the brother's I always wanted, and Rosie and Darrell are the parents I admired. These years are the memories I will forever hold onto when remembering times with Darrell. All of our world wide brothers and sisters as we became such a large extended family sharing so many good times and tears as we all grew and went our separate ways. I love you all so much. my thoughts, prayers, love and hugs are with you all. I love you so much. Loss is heartbreaking. Much, much love my dear "family". I love you, Leigh

I grew up with the Aments and considered Darrell as my Godfather and Troy, Todd and Timmy as my Godbrothers. We had wonderful times living next door in Mission Hills, camping and Jeeping and just spending time together. I would go spend time with them in Anaheim and was the "daughter." After graduating from high school, I was invited to travel to Europe with Darrell, Rosie and Todd where we went to visit all of the exchange students. It was a great time and Darrell and I were the ones who wanted to see all of the Museums. What an intellect and he was one of the reasons I went to college. Rest in Peace "Dad" Love you, Lori

Dear family and friends:
Thank you for getting online today to join me in remembrance of my beloved husband Darrell.

Darrell went to heaven at noon on August 23, 2020.

Derrell went to work in China after his retirement and we met by chance and by fate. Then we joined our hands and our hearts in marriage.

The most fortunate thing in my life was to meet Darrell. Only after I met him, had I truly realized the happiness and joy of being loved.

Later, I followed him to his hometown of America. From the east to the west of the United States, we have seen different sceneries along the way.

He introduced to me all the way his families and his country.

The year after we settled in Riverside. Derrell was hired by the Riverside City Government as a City Consultant.
He also volunteered to serve as a member of Riverside International Relations Committee.

Darrell particularly cared about and was supportive of Chinese associations and organizations. He made great contribution to the international relations and friendship between Sister Cities between China and the US.

In 2008, during Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan China, some of the houses in the mountains where we had stayed on vacation were all buried by the mud slides during the earthquake, Darrell cried when he heard the news. He immediately took me to the Rescue Donation center.

Darrell had great love in his heart, he was kind, and always willing to help others. He was honest and unright . His life was filled with light.

In his heart, all peoples in the world are children of God, they are all equal, and they should all live in harmony.

I love Darrell and his noble and selfless character.

Darrell was very considerate and meticulous. He cared and loved me in every way possible which helped me adapt to this foreign land quickly. Following him, although far away from my own homeland, my heart no longer wandered.

He used to say to me: "My darling, I don't know how to do housework, so I will be responsible for complimenting you every day and making you happy." I also joked with my friends, "see what an easy job he has chosen in our house of just saying some sweet words every day and they make me happy and keep doing housework!"

To my great amazement Darrell really kept his words and praised me every day. Year after year, day after day, he never failed to tell me "I love you. my beautiful wife" , until he could no longer speak towards the end of his life.

This long-lasting dedication, this deep love, still warms my heart as it always does!

Dear Darrell, now you have gone to heaven but left behind your everlasting love which will forever accompany me. You will always live in my heart!

Your loving wife, LanXiao

His Life

Darrell Lee Ament

September 8, 2020
Darrell was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as the oldest son of his parents Edwin & Mae Louise Ament.  Darrell is survived by his three sons Troy, Todd and Tim, his wife Lanxiao, his ex-wife Rosie, his sister Beth and brother Ed.

Growing up in Kent, Ohio Darrell studied political science & economics at Kent State University.  He was married to Rosie Nighman and in 1961 their first son Troy Michael Ament was born in Ravenna, Ohio.  Darrell, Rosie and Troy set out in their Volkswagen Beetle and drove across the United States to San Fernando, California where Darrell began studying for his PHD degree at the University of California Los Angeles.  In 1964 Rosie and Darrell welcomed their middle son Todd Matthew Ament, born in the city of Lakeview Terrace.

In 1967, Darrell started what would be a 27 year career with the Anaheim Public Utilities Department.  This job led to Darrell and his family moving to Anaheim and shortly after their youngest son Timothy Mark Ament was born in Bellflower in 1968.  During the 27 years with the Anaheim Public Utilities Darrell lead six different divisions including becoming the assistant general manager of the finance & administration department where he would help to negotiate over $15 billion in bonds for water and electric capital projects that would be instrumental in lower the costs of these vital services to the citizens of Anaheim for years to come.  Darrell also led a city study team called "Powerful Partnerships" with the charter of retaining and attracting businesses to Anaheim and these efforts helped to attract 25 new business and over 3,300 jobs.

Darrell and Rosie hosted 17 exchange students from around the world over 15 years, acting as inspiring ambassadors for the United States and more importantly acting as positive roles models for their family and friends around the importance of accepting people from differing cultural backgrounds and from around the world.

In 2004, Darrell remarried to Lanxaio and the two of them lived in China for a couple of years, eventually returning to the United States and moving to Riverside.  Lanxaio and Darrell quickly established themselves in the community and were involved in many community programs, again centered around international students and relationships between cities from different countries.  Lanxaio cared for our father in the last few years of his life as his health declined and dementia began to severely impact his ability to live independently.

Outside of our father's career and family, one of the defining aspects of his life was his continued passion and commitment to volunteering across numerous organizations throughout his life.  It was this selfless passion for helping others that truly defines his character and his commitment for treating people from all nationalities and from all walks of life with interest, compassion and respect.  Our dad was quoted in a local newspaper article written in 1990 to celebrate the return of 15 exchange students for our parents 50th birthday.

"It's been a wild two weeks.  The most meaningful thing I have learned is that love transcends international boundaries.  We have a wonderful family all over the world - we love them like our own"  Darrell Ament 1990

Those words from our father exemplify the father, man and global citizen that he will be remembered by and what we encourage everyone to strive to be in all of our lives.  Our father's family extended well beyond the traditional family unit and he loved and cared for others as if they were his own.

We will miss our father, but his memory lives on through our actions and through everyone that he positively interacted with in his life.

Here is just a short list of the organizations that our father was involved in throughout the years.

  • Council Member, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, San Fernando, California, 1966-67.
