Ditch Pran, a survivor of the Killing Fields in Cambodia, passed away of pancreatic cancer on March 30, 2008. This man went through so much in his life but he didn't let anything stop him. Pran, a journalist working with an American reporter Sydney Schanberg, was captured by the Khmer Rouge and held hostage for four and a half years. Pran was forced to be a field worker for the Khmer Rouge while in captivity. He was also forced to hide his educational background in order to stay alive. Through all of his struggles and challenges Pran never gave up and he fought his way to freedom. When Pran returned from the Khmer Rouge's control, he reunited with his family in the United States, he became a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and he also founded the Dith Pran Holocaust Awareness Project. His goal was to help in educating people on the history of the Khmer Rouge regime. At the age of 65 in a New Jersey hospital Pran lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. Although Pran lost his battle with cancer, he won the battle against the Khmer Rouge.
