TRIBUTE TO  EMERITUS PROF. E. A. ADEYEMI.                          Baba Adeyemi, E. A. was indeed a Professor of Professors. A very humble leader who touched many lives as a lecturer, supervisor and examiner accross the length and breadth of Nigeria and beyond. As my examiner at the bachelor degree and supervisor at Phd degree levels as well as mentor in the academic career, I was greatly privileged to have met such an enviable and highly inspiring personality and mentor with enduring passion and commitment. Adieu, the patriarch of Architecture in Nigeria. May the Lord give the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Prof. J. A. Fadamiro, FUT Akure

TRIBUTE TO A COLOSSUS

I thought I first got to know about Professor Adeyemi, shortly after I took up appointment at the University of Ife, in 1985. It was in the context of learning he'd been "schemed" out of coming to Ife, when he was re-locating south, after leaving ABU. However, many years later, I was proved wrong...

My first real contact with him was in 2001, during my Sabbatical Leave at FUTA, when he was just winding up his tenure as VC there. I found him very courteous, warm and generally paternal. It should not be surprising that years later (specifically, in 2006) - and having interacted with him on several other platforms - I sought him out to write a "foreword" on a book I had co-authored. With his characteristic simplicity and kindness, he gladly obliged.

About seven years further down the line, I was overhauling paper junk in a chest, and came across the letter of admission I had been issued by ABU to read Architecture, way back in 1977 (after I had already started at Ife); to my intense shock, I found it had been signed by Professor Adeyemi - in his capacity as Dean of the School! I quickly called him up to share my surprise. Characteristically, he laughed modestly and remarked, "it's a small world!"

Our beloved Father-in-Academia, saying you were a worthy role-model would be a gross understatement. To say you were an epitome of humility and diligence, would be saying the obvious. That your position as mentor and general encourager will be difficult to fill in many lives, begins to address the sense of monumental loss many of us feel. Our consolation is that your life-impacting legacies abound - and will endure.

Adieu, Sir; may you truly rest in peace...

THE ODYSSEY OF A COLOSSUS
Celebrating one of the highly acclaimed Architects of the 20th and the 21st Century

I grew up knowing our Uncle, the erudite Emeritus Professor Ekundayo Adeyinka Adeyemi, FNIA (popularly simply referred to by everyone as Professor Adeyemi or Prof), the first Professor of Architecture in Nigeria and Sub Saharan Africa, the first Nigerian Head of Department of Architecture at ABU as a repository of immense knowledge, wisdom, kindness, humility, an extremely loving and devoted family man who was greatly endeared to his people. He was an efficient Administrator, Father and Grandfather to many in the profession of Architecture. He was a particularly phenomenal Teacher, Teacher of Professors and of Teachers, a peace-loving colleague and a very good friend to all. Professor Adeyemi who I call (Daddy being one of my fathers and mentor) would always call me to ask after my Dad’s well-being while my Dad was still alive enquiring, “Yinka, Egbon mi nko?” (meaning: How is my big brother, and hope that all is well with him?). Both brothers loved themselves to bits, just like blood brothers. He earned the utmost respect of my late Dad. He often called me his namesake, and it gave me a sense of great pride to bear the same first name with such a great man.

Anyone who ever passed through Professor Adeyemi as a student could write a whole book on him and all that he impacted on us. The impact of his footprints are still evident at The Zaria School of Architecture/ABU community past and present, likewise at other higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. He devoted his life to training Architects. My entire ABU class of ’86 have fond memories of him as we often reminisce about him on our WhatsApp platform. My classmate, Amina Ahmed reached out to Prof last year and they chatted very often, she asked him to give her a Yoruba name as she was one of his daughters. She often informed the group of her chats with her father. I found it difficult to break the news to her when Prof passed on. He taught every class Professional Practice, and taught our class History of Architecture and Structures at no notice for long periods whenever the Lecturers designated to teach those courses were on leave. He was dedicated to his calling-Architecture, imparting knowledge at every opportunity. As our Head of Department in the 80s, we found this towering personality most approachable and he was the ultimate solution provider to any all knotty issues that were brought to his attention. Most importantly, he was that HOD known to “allow you to be yourself” to design any and every innovative project idea, to which he gave every guidance, support and encouragement, to become tangible realisation. Interestingly, he appreciated the simple ideas and would ensure that they were well curated and not mediocre. My utmost gratitude to the great sage, Professor Adeyemi who believed in us and empowered us with diverse knowledge that prepared us for today. His teachings greatly emboldened me to traverse several areas of Architecture.

Daddy, besides your Architecture family, the larger community of Christ’s School, Ado Ekiti Alumni Association also celebrate you, up School!!!!! You stood beside us at your brother’s funeral in Church at Aramoko-Ekiti to render the school song, “Christ is our Cornerstone” very proudly on the 30th September 2021. Thank you sir. You are a revered Christ’s Scholar sir, and I have to quote the school motto, “Not in name only, but indeed and in truth, for the sake of Christ, whose name we bear”.

My dearest Mummy, Bukky, Tola, Dare, Bimbo, Doyin, Jide and Lola, rest assured the comforting arms of the Lord is around you always, and all is well. Daddy, Father in a million, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace, amen. Good night Daddy.

A Tribute to my Granduncle.

It's hard to believe you are gone I was still planning on coming to Ekiti during the Easter holidays so you could see your great-granddaughter.

Your life is remarkable and challenging.

You were always so welcoming, hospitable, and approachable.

If one didn't know your accomplishments, a chance interaction with you will never make them suspicious.

You were so down to earth.

What a challenge to us as we ascend in life?

You showed that no matter your accomplishments in life, remain human, remain approachable.

We wish you were still here. It's our loss but heaven's gain.

Keep on resting in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ.

TRIBUTE TO MY MENTOR, ADVISOR AND TEACHER – THE LATE PROFESSOR EMERITUS EKUNDAYO ADEYINKA ADEYEMI
I am indeed greatly saddened by the news that Professor E.A Adeyemi had passed away on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. There was no sign of him departing from this world, when I went to see him in his country home on December 18, 2021. I recall my last visit revealed your entireness from Architectural education but alas! It is finally time for him to rest.
Prof, put my path in Architecture and made everything make sense in my world (at least he did for me). There is so much I can say about him as a person, but today, I choose to remember him as the mentor he was to me. I have the privilege and honour of being his Ph.D. graduate student in 2014. I can still vividly remember the time I spent with him in his office at Covenant University discussing my research work as well as other personal matters, I owed him what I am today. He indeed had a significant influence on my life and career.
I am sure all of us here interacted with him, in one way or another, in his capacity as an instructor. He actually got that assignment done extremely well. He kept reminding me of the importance of always showing up and doing your best in this life as a teacher because we have great impact on students. He warned me, never to fail any student even in my anger or displeasure because you may never really get to know the actual destruction you are doing. He also told me that everyone matters, so instead of just leaving a mark on them, leave a great mark on them. With the passing of Prof. Adeyemi, Architecture has lost one of its foremost visionary teachers who had the greatest total knowledge of Architecture training and professional interests in Nigeria. Apart from being a truly eminent scholar, a great educator, a man of vision, research integrity, extraordinary leadership, high dedication and tremendous strength. Prof. E.A. Adeyemi had a sensitive and warm approach to people and took a personal and keen interest in his students’ welfare, design and work.
I Though Prof. Emeritus E.A Adeyemi may have left this world, his legacies and contributions to Architecture will live forever Ciao my ever smart Mentor and legendary true scholar.
Sincerely yours,
A Forever Indebted Mentee

Pa, Ekundayo Adeyinka Adeyemi, the Emeritus Professor of Architecture, father of Sub-Saharan Africa Architecture, lover of youths and developer of Architecture.

You live a fulfilled life, I contacted you for advice during my professional registration struggle and you offered me fatherly, humble, non violent and dialogue advise that still remains fresh in my heart. Thus, your piece of advise finally led to my registration along with hundreds other qualified Architects who were registered as Architect. Your yearning for a higher number of registered architects in practice has been propelled by Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), as over 3000 qualified candidates were registered as Architect between 2018 - 2021 under the leadership of Arc. (Sir) Dipo Ajayi and his team which was unprecedented in the history of Nigeria Architecture. The legacy we pray it sustained.

Baba, you have contributed immensely to the advancement in Architectural training, research and practice. May your humble soul rest in perfect peace, amen.

TRIBUTE TO PROF.EKUNDAYO ADEYINKA ADEYEMI

I was deeply saddened about the news of the death of Erudite Prof.Ekundayo Adeyemi .A distinguished colossus of architecture in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The initiator of the PGD program in Architecture, and as a beneficiary of the program through the Federal University Of Technology Akure (FUTA),I owe him a huge debt of gratitude and so many others who took that route towards full licensure with the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON)under Arc.Dipo Ajayi's tenureship.

I refuse to mourn but choose to celebrate His life. A life worth emulating.

May your great gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

I would call you my Grandpa because I could see what a father you were. I cannot ever forget the way you and your family took me in and supported me at my lowest ebb. Your advise on how to get out of that dark stage still echoes in my mind. You did live a good life, impacting all that you came across positively. A father indeed you were and as you go to rest in the bosom of your heavenly father, I can only say, rest on Grandpa.

TRIBUTE TO A DISTINGUISHED ACADEMIC

We never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory.
It is a truism that life is a brief intermission between birth and death.
But death is not simply the end of life, it is the beginning of an eternal journey.

I pay this tribute to you, a distinguished Professor of inestimable value, a doyen of Architecture.
Yes, I knew you at Covenant University as a thorough bred academic.
You became everybody’s Dean and Mentor.
You were exemplary, you were soft spoken, you were gracious, you lived a good life.

As we grieve over your passage, we find hope through the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and the promise of life after death.
We are consoled that you lived a fulfilled life, preparing to meet your creator on the resurrection morning.

Rest in the bossom of the Lord, till we meet again!
Adieu Distinguished Professor Ekundayo Adeyemi!!

TRIBUTE TO A GREAT & WORTHY MAN

I first met Prof in 1984... wow that's almost 40 years ago! I had gone to ABU Zaria on the instructions of my late dad- Chief (Arc) Ebun Faturoti to follow up on my admission process into ABU. Him and my dad had been school mates and bosom friends from their days in ABU Zaria where they both studied Architecture in the 50s.

Prof and his dear wife- (who we all fondly called Mummy) welcomed me with open hands into their home despite meeting me for the first time. I was to spend my first year as a student in ABU in their home as I was unable to secure accomdation in the hostel. During the one year I stayed with them and for the whole of the 4 years I spent in Zaria I never really missed home because Prof and his family were exceptional guardians not only to me but to everyone who came their way. I used to watch with amazement then when total strangers would arrive at their doorstep from a far distance seeking admission in ABU, only to be taken in and hosted by this wonderful family for weeks and even months!

It is certain that Ekiti State, Nigeria and Africa has lost a great son who projected with pride a profession he loved so much. The story of Architecture in Nigeria and Africa cannot be complete without mentioning Prof Yinka Adeyemi.
He has left his marks on the sands of time and will surely be missed.

On behalf of the entire family of Late Chief (Arc) Ebun Faturoti we extend our heartfelt condolences to Mummy Adeyemi, Buky and her siblings. May the Lord comfort, keep and sustain you all in Jesus mighty name. Our consolation is that for a child of God death is temporary because we shall still meet one day on that glorious resurrection morning. Glory to God!

God bless,
Omokorede Fasoro (Nee Faturoti)

February 7, 2022

I have had several encounters with Baba, first in in 1979 when as an unknown student I entered his asking to transfer to ABU Zaria from Unife. Next was when he was my M.Sc External Examiner in 1987. I finally met him in 2015 at Covenant University as a P.hD student. Till a he died on Monday 23/1/2022 a few days to my defense on 4/2/2022, I was his last supervised student there. Papa was there to take me through thick & thin. We were still discussing my work on "Semiotics and Meaning in Architecture: A Study of Spaces and Built-forms of Southwest Nigeria" into the end of 2021. He was forever encouraging, an embodiment of emphaty and grace. Every moment with you was full of life, especially when reminiscing, I remember discussing your good relationship with your old friend Pa. Ven Arc. Segun Kuti, also one of your last achievements of being part of those who secured a University for Iyin-Ekiti. Despite your kindness you never compromised doing things right. I wish you were there to the very end, but you selflessly saw my thesis to the point of an enduring success. Rest in the bosom of your Lord, till we meet ot the resurrection of the righteous dear father and saint triumphant.

I don't have the opportunity to work directly with Prof Eku Dayo Adeyemi. However, with what the people are saying about him and from what I have personally read about him, I could see the burden in his heart concerning the Polytechnic graduates in Architecture. Worried with the frustrations being levelled on THE Higher National Diploma (HND) products by the NIA and ARCON, Baba became a major instrument used by God to establish the Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) program during his short stay AT the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). Many people that would have either be frustrated to sister professions or continue to practise the Architecture profession illegally are now proud holders of Architects Registration of Nigeria (ARCON) seal. I am a practical beneficiary of this gesture, except that the ARCON Council led by Arc Dipo Ajayi (PARCON) is still denying me my seal illegally, even after passing the recognised professional examinations, as captured by the ARCON Act and Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA) Constitution, and with all relevant certificates received. Everybody that has travelled through the PGD programme to professional registration in Architecture owe Prof Ekundayo Adeyemi a debt of gratitude forever! Please sir, continue to rest in the blossom of the lord until that resurrection night when we shall all meet to part no more. Adieu!

You made me believe in myself changing the tangentory of my life for good.

Thank you for You - Daddy. You were one lecturer & Dean whose doors were ever open. Thank you for all the fatherly advices & wisdom nuggets, prayers & Financial supports while at school.

ADIEU TO A DESTINY HELPER

In the journey of life, God connects us with people who play significant role(s) in our lives – I call such people, destiny helpers. The year was 1995 when our paths crossed; I was seeking admission into the university (FUTA), but I didn’t meet the cut-off mark for the course of my choice.

With my hopes fading, I received the news that I had been admitted to study quantity surveying – thanks to Professor Adeyemi’s kindness. As if that wasn’t enough, I spent the entire time in Akure living in his boys’ quarters, and he became my father and guardian. There were countless times when I’d be broke – with no money to feed, but I never went hungry. The care, love and kindness that I received from him and his family is something that I hold very dear and will remember for the rest of my days.

I had one of the greatest honor of my life, when he accepted to be the chairman of the day for my wedding.

Daddy was many things to people – a father, mentor, adviser, and so on. To me, he was all of those things plus a destiny helper. I say to people that if it wasn’t for his kindness, I wouldn’t have attended FUTA, let alone be a chartered surveyor – a career that has afforded me a lot of opportunities and privileges.

I spoke to him a few days before Christmas, he was his normal cheerful self, he shared some words of wisdom with me, and prayed for me. Little did I know we were talking for the last time. He leaves with fond memories, and for that I am thankful to God Almighty.

I will always be indebted to you, sir. Thank you for the opportunity you gave me. I pray that God grant your soul rest in His eternal kingdom; I pray also that God grants the family (immediate and extended) the strength and fortitude to bear this great loss, in Jesus’ name – amen.

*TRIBUTE TO PROFESSOR Ekundayo Adeyinka Adeyemi*

By Pastor Akin. A. Adeoye (Architect)

Apart from being the latest Uncle and Father in *Olabosoye dynasty* to exit this sinful world, I discovered very early enough that, *he was one of the most brilliant and receptive minds I ever met in life*.

*Professor Adeyinka Adeyemi* believed that *each individual should be judged by his or her own merits* and not by any external social indicators such as age, sex, or social class. True to form, he rather than prejudicing and capping abilities of his students, *he gave us free rein to the fields of academia*.

This University Scholar, his program was a culmination of the belief that each Architectural student, if given total academic freedom, could develop a curricula for himself or herself that would be both broad and deep - and ultimately more challenging and fulfilling that any core-course based curricula could ever be.

*Professor EA Adeyemi was a pioneer in redefining the goals of higher Architectural education in Nigeria and Africa*, and in inspiring students to take a broad range of courses and to love what they studied. As I look back now, that was implicit in everything he taught and showed us. *In an age of specialization and career-based education, this Professor Emeritus was a Renaissance man.*

*Professor E.A Adeyemi doors were always open for students, whether in Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU) Zaria. Federal University of Science and Technology Akure, (FUTA) or in Covenant University. His mind was always open for new thoughts and new ideas*. I always enjoyed being able to go and enter a debate with him over one subject or another.

*The only area we have disagreement was in the area of native intelligent in the affairs of settling local issues because of his always innocent gravitation to broad world views.* Professor Adeyemi focus and depth of his field in Architecture were amazing which he followed throughout with vigour. No dull moments.

*Death always bring to close so many unfulfilled wishes.* Many today, will regret that they didn't take advantages of Prof's open door much more amongst his students while alive. *Although, noticeably, and since I came of age, his body was never frail, his mind was always so energetic that I could never imagine him passing away now.*

Even at this moment of his glorious exit in service, *we are learning more about the man who was many all over the world to different people, a mentor, teacher, advisor, and friend*.

He was a man who loved his family dearly - the sadness and loss in the faces of his numerous sons and daughters cum grandchildren spoke more of their feelings towards him. *I learned that he was active in ensuring peace and harmony in the community of Iyin Ekiti as a whole, and in his capacity as a traditional chief- a vital force of peaceful resolution of issues.*

I learned that not only had he helped the careers of many students such as myself through his advice and warm support, but that many Doctorates, professors had become equally as indebted to him.

The world has lost a brilliant mind, his family a dear father and grandparent, a valuable professor and former dean, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and we all lost a dear friend. In his stead, Professor Adeyemi left himself in the lives of many people. *I see his warmth towards his family especially his Wife (Aunty Remi) and Children*. I see his compassion towards all his students reflected in the Professional Architects, Doctors in the the field of Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning and professors he touched. And I see his drive for a diverse, intense, and exciting education in the students whose lives in all the schools of Architecture he had helped guide.

*Uncountable will remember a man of great humor with the exceptional ability to listen and dispense sound wisdom in his career and personal life. It should not be surprising that in addition to his role as a professor of Architecture, environmental engineering and science and technology studies, he also served as dean of the faculty.*

*"He was Non-judgmental, a good listener, fair, diplomatic, calm, sensible." All these were 'YINKA' for you, permit to exemplify the way his uncle - my late father RABIU ADEOYE used to call him.*

*My sincere condolences go out to all of us in the family, especially, his Wife of inestimable value, Remi Adeyemi ( Nee Olofin), the sons and daughters* and to us many, many friends he made during his years where he had opportunity to serve all over the world.

He will be remembered by all who knew him *as a man who loved and devoted his career to making it better.*

ERIN WO! AJANAKU SUN BI OKE!! THE BUILDER OF BUILDERS;PROF(CHIEF) EKUNDAYO ADEYINKA ADEYEMI, THE ARO ARIWAJOYE OF OKETORO IS GONE!!!
It was a rude shock to me when I received the news of your death Daddy!
We were all expecting your quick recovery from that hospital bed, but that didn't happen
OMO AKIN! ARO ARIWAJOYE of Oketoro, you lived your name. Your life of contentment was second to none, you were not moved by material acquisition, your life of simplicity is a legacy you left for us.
I remember my visit to you in zaria August 1985, your house was like an hostel accommodating as many as space permitted, I remember the hospitality and warmth you and your darling wife( Mummy zaria) as we fondly call her showed me. I wont forget in a hurry my fated encounter with you in 1995, going for my NYSC in Benue State, your first words were "Bose ranti omo eni ti o n se o", the name "ADEYEMI " meant so much to you, even when you had several opportunities in life to enrich yourself you never did, You protected the name "ADEYEMI" till death came calling.
Your name opened doors even in an unknown land.
I'm very proud of you even in death Daddy!

EKUNDAYO ADEYINKA ADEYEMI: PROFESSOR, MENTOR AND INTERLOCUTOR EXTRAORDINAIRE

It was the third quarter of 1985 and I’d barely slept for three days preparing to defend my B Sc Architecture thesis. I’d prayed to be scheduled for much later in the day, so when the list showed me as Number 2, matters were quickly out of my immediate control. While sticking up my drawings in one of the seminar rooms of the iconic University Teaching Centre of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, I was fatigued, famished and fearful. I kept stealing glances at the external examiner; the famed Professor Adeyemi who cut the image of a sage with a sartorial simplicity that oozed elegance. When I commenced my defence stuttering through my initial statements, he sensed my fear and unease and promptly handed me his emblematic pointing stick that resembled a prophet’s rod or a magician’s wand. I do not know what was in that rod but I vividly recall what happened as I gripped it. My fear and fatigue receded, replaced by clarity and confidence. He even cut in once or twice to help elucidate a point I was straining to make. From that point onward, I knew the degree was already in the bag. I would face him again two years later but it was already a settled matter that I was standing before a brilliant, experienced and humane father who sought nothing but my utmost good. Thanks a million, Professor Ekundayo Adeyinka Adeyemi. Your memory will always be a blessing.

It was time for thesis topic selection. Everyone seemed to have an architecturally stunning or insightful topic/design intents except me. I kept searching for some altruistic subject and finally, I got one. A topic no one had done before in the department. Elderly Care Home.

It was dead on arrival with my supervisor and no support from my other friendly lecturers until I got to Prof. Adeyemi's office. He thought it was a thoughtful and interesting project . He gave me full support and wings to fly into an unpopular territory that has become my dream.

A child sees the now, A father sees the near future and A Grandfather sees beyond the future. Thank you Prof. Adeyemi for allowing me to stand on your giant shoulders to see beyond my years,

Rest on Papi!!!!

Prof.was an exceptional and a great teacher. He made many to love and adore architecture.I once asked Prof.if there was any mathematical formula that I could use in my designs. Both lecturers and students present laughed at me for asking the question. But Prof.smiled and said architectural
designs are products of complex, rational and critical thinking and that I would appreciate that later in my professional career.I did.He made many not to "CHANGE THE COURSE".Prof.was more than a teacher and a mentor. He was a father to all in true sense of the word.Prof.considered all his students as members of his immediate family.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

Baba Adeyemi was and still the smartest man I have seen working and walking so strong in his age, he climbs the stairs faster than many youths. He teaches with the simplest form of demonstrations. He encouraged me when I was down and frustrated in this field of architecture. I believe he's a perfect example of success considering the number of lives he has touched. The shoe he left I don't know who's fit to wear. What a selfless man he was, he wasn't moved with material things. May the Lord accept your soul and keep you in his eternal bosom. Rest in peace Daddy of Architecture.

Words are not enough to describe our departed father, an erudite scholar and great grandfather of architecture, Prof Ekundayo Adeyinka Adeyemi, FNIA. He was a very kind father, a caring mentor, an articulate teacher and the professor of professors.

Prof Adeyemi impacted many life. He was my M.Sc Architecture Examiner at OAU Ile-Ife, after which I continued to be privileged to associate and learn from him.
I had wonderful experience with him during my Youth Service at FUTA. I cannot forget in a hurry how Prof Adeyemi (a Deputy Vice Chancellor) would bring himself very low to my level and discuss with me in his office like a colleague while I was just an ordinary Corps Member.

I also had a rare opportunity to serve under him as the Scientific Committee Secretary of 2005 Africa Union of Architects (AUA) Conference, when he was the Chairman of the Scientific Committee. It was really a rare privilege to have opportunity to tap a little from his wealth of knowledge.

We will surely miss him. May the Lord console all of us that he left behind and may his gentle soul rest in peace. Amen.

THE BEGINNING

BIRTH OF AN ICON

Ekundayo Adeyinka (Yinka) Adeyemi was born to Chief & Mrs. Joseph O.L. Adeyemi on 27th February 1937 in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. His mother, Felicia Bolarinde, married at a tender age in the year 1933 and subsequently suffered recurring stillbirths and miscarriages until he was later conceived. Limited knowledge at the time led to the deduction that she was a victim of magic-animistic forces. This drove the need for her to be confined to a remote compound in Ilorin for protection until Yinka was born.
Yinka’s birth at 9:30am, at the Ilorin Native Authority Hospital, was significant to the family as a co-occurrence with the death of his grandmother, Olabosoye, a princess of Ido-Ani, a day after his birth at exactly 9:30am. She had lived to witness his birth; an expressed wish that was fulfilled in God’s time. This fostered a connection to his grandmother well into his later years; an innate bond that incited an awareness of his enriched heritage which led to formative years that birthed his identity as a leader and trailblazer.
April 9, 2022
COMMUNAL LIVING, PRIMARY SCHOOL, AND GROWING UP DURING WORLD WAR II

Yinka grew up in the Railway Quarters, the “Afonta” in Jebba, a city in present Kogi State. His father, Chief Joseph O.L. Adeyemi, joined the Nigerian Railway Corporation in 1919 and later became the Head Clerk at the Local Running Shed.

As an important official, often clad in a manner that befitted his position as the Head Clerk, he always attracted people who visited him at home seeking all manners of assistance. He was receptive to all, never refusing them but calmy rendering assistance; a demeanour that earned him the nickname “Dawodu” (Master) as a result of his unrestricted hospitality.

The Christian commune at Afonta enabled a peaceful, harmonious co-existence. Chief Adeyemi and his friends would eat from the same dish in a manner reminiscent of the Lord’s Supper with His disciples and trusted all with an open heart. Memories at the Afonta tended to drift into oblivion as Yinka once remarked. However, the strongest of memories that bore a  mental image was one of "loving and caring”. This experience greatly influenced Yinka’s lifestyle.

Yinka was born two years before World War II. In his book entitled “In the making of an architect …the Zaria days”, he reminisced on this phase of his childhood as impactful; eliciting memories of creativity birthed through a free spirit that existed amongst his peers and bearing influence in his formative years.
The war sensibility found expression in the children of that time in their everyday recreational life. They imitated military dressing and exhibited military idiosyncrasies. They would create symbols of military power by piercing fig leaves together and making them into belts. Such belts were slung diagonally across the shoulder and strapped round the waist to imitate military dressing. They even made caps of leaves, and when the dressing was complete, formed files, as the soldiers did on parade and marched to the orders of the child appointed as the commander. In perfect celebration of the British Sovereign power, school children feasted on Empire Day, which was May 24, and were made to parade the major streets of the Jebba town, eulogising the British Monarch: then King George VI, the Prime Minister: Clement Alee, and his wife Clementine.
His memories of the World War II era included his going along with other children to the railway station to catch glimpses of soldiers in transit, perhaps on their way to the war front where the war raged fiercest in Burma. The soldiers would, at times, come down from their coaches for a small drill on the station platform, but would often look out from the coach windows or accept drinking water from the children in exchange for hard-but-sweetened candies and tins of corned beef. Yinka and his friends were only too eager and happy to receive these gifts and thus, made it a duty to be present at the station with their buckets of drinking water during the parades on the platform.
Yinka began his primary education at the United Missionary Society (UMS) School between 1942 and 1943. Having concluded a part of his primary school education in Jebba by 1946, and upon his father’s transfer to Ebute Metta junction, (EBJ) Yaba, Lagos, he moved to Offa, where he completed standard III at the St. Mark’s school. By 1948, he moved to attend the African Bethel School on Lagos Street at Ebute Metta, Lagos. Although the memories of his days in Offa and Lagos were not as endearing as were the years of his childhood in Jebba, the surfacing of his natural talents started with his flair for soccer. At Offa, his peers would stand by to watch as he dexterously dribbled past opponents and applaud at each move he made, with an accompanying rhythmic shout of “zero” at each successful dribble. In Lagos, he spent more time in the classroom rather than on the field of play. His father then began to recognize his intellect, as he developed greater confidence in his academic performance.

SECONDARY SCHOOL: THE CHRIST'S SCHOOL YEARS

In 1952, Yinka passed the entrance examination into Christ’s School, Ado-Ekiti. While in Christ’s School, he had a thorough grounding in academics, social and spiritual matters. He studied hard with a view to being the best as the school itself was rated among the best in the country. His natural talents blossomed as a soccer player and as a literary enthusiast, but more particularly as a leader. He read all the Greek fables in the library, as well as the Arabian Nights, the Splendid Savage and a lot more.

He also acquired a capacity for drawing and painting, and together with Michael Adebayo Ajayi and late Abiodun Oso, formed an Art Club under the guidance of their Art Teacher, Peter Omo Erese. They named the club, the ERESON Art Circle; Ereson being an elision of the names Erese and Mason (the Principal of Christ’s school at the time). Both Bayo and Abiodun eventually gained admission to study Fine Arts at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology (NCAST), Zaria.

Yinka saw in his principal, Rev. Canon Leslie Donald Mason, a model, mentor and father. Through admiration, he sought to adopt his winning ways.Rev. Mason wrote a testimonial about him upon his graduation from Christ’s School in 1956:

"An excellent student in every way. A School Prefect and House Captain in his last year, offices in which he showed considerable power of leadership and maturity of judgement. A boy of keen intelligence and a thorough group of essentives."
