ForeverMissed

Emily Hunter's life philosophy can be summed up in three phrases:
  • May you be well.
  • Always be kind.
  • Never stop creating.
She was never happy unless she was making someone else happy, whether through her labor, her sense of humor, or her kindness. A firm believer in universal goodwill toward all regardless of who they were, people who met her were touched by her generosity and fierce devotion to their well-being.

Emily was raised in central Florida and moved to the Atlanta area to attend Oxford College of Emory at the age of 16. Nearly all the remainder of her life, she stayed in the Atlanta area. After college, she had a 17-year career in the printing and reprographics industry, creating blueprints and spec books for buildings all across Atlanta.

She left her manager position in 2010 to start her own business as a writer, but her deep dream was to become a business owner. 10 years later, that writing dream grew into a successful writing agency called Hunting For Words. With her life partner, Harry Coburn, they created a thriving company that will outlive her.

Creativity was a cornerstone of her values, because by being creative you leave a legacy to share with others. She would try any form of art at least once, from cross-stich, to painting, to even rare arts like pysanky and kumihimo braiding which she learned through her participation in the Society for Creative Anachronism. Emily was known in the Society as Stefania Zaffiro. She was also an accomplished clarinetist.

Emily left a trail of kindness in her wake, raising everyone's mood. It was a skill she strove to cultivate. We are all saddened by her passing.

For those who wish to pay their respects in person, there will be a memorial at her house on August 8th and 9th. Please contact Harry Coburn over Facebook for the address.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to any of these causes:

If you wish to help defray cremation expenses, please send money through PayPal to harry@huntingforwords.com. All excess monies will be donated to charity.

Dearest Emily,
I will miss our cracking conversations and wholehearted connection. You were so fun, amazing, cool and such a clever woman. I admired you as soon as we met as a brilliant writer and business woman! You were the only person I trusted with my little unedited story. Thank you Emily for being you, your loving energy and enthusiasm.
I know that Your Soul is still shining bright as the light all around us. You’re always in my heart and never apart.
With sadness and my deepest love,
Linda Yim xoxo

Lighting a candle because Emily was such a light in this world. We met through the SCA and she was a force in our local group. Beyond that she brought joy wherever she went. Her blend of positivity, humor, caring communication, always questing for better, and gift for kind words with a few salty ones mixed in for seasoning brought so much to us all. I enjoyed reading and watching her FB presence, but most of all just sitting and talking. I am so glad she and Harry got to go to Pennsic last year so they could share that magic. I am sorry I can't join Harry in celebrating Emily today. Missing her these last days I still tear up but also smile and even giggle at the memory of a story or picture or gem of wisdom she shared. Her light shines in our memories, and I hope her warmth continues to comfort us all.

Emily’s sense of humor was one of the highlights of scrolling social. I love well-crafted prose & a post from Emily would always stop me in my scrolly tracks to indulge. I don’t say that lightly: I’m a writing snob.

Whenever Emily posted, I knew I would find wit & wisdom woven within an earnest curiosity and passion for exploring ideas with friends. Hell, she could make writing on typically boring business subjects a compelling read. In fact, those were some of my faves because we work in the same field and I knew I would learn something & chuckle while doing it.

I admired Emily’s passion for her work & her genuine compassion for her clients fueled by her heartfelt commitment to their success. It seemed to me that Emily delighted most in the intellectual challenges and creativity of it.

Her curiosity, open mind and open heart were joys you felt right off the bat upon meeting her. She forged warm connections with people that always made them feel welcome. She listened with an authentic interest that we don’t often see in a world that’s “all about me”.

Her most endearing connection to see was the love she held for her partner, Harry. I saw their relationship from the distance of her writing and just a few in person meetings, but even through that small lens, the depth & breadth of their partnership was clear & a joy to behold. Witnessing Emily & Harry work together to build better lives for themselves and each other, together, offered hope that maybe something real really is out there for the rest of us.

Her stories of how they navigated their business, home life and achieving the goals they had for themselves as individuals and as business partners told of mutual respect, genuine love, care and support. They read books together and embarked on changing their lifestyle for the better and while the details were about mundane stuff like shopping, cooking & eating, it all sounded romantic as heck. True intimacy and connection lives in the paces of daily life.

Emily, your kindness, your caring, your curiosity and passions for creativities big and small will be wildly missed.

She was one of the most aggressively positive people I ever knew. She worked hard to see the best in everything and to ensure that everyone was included. I don’t know how to imagine a world with an Emily shaped hole in it.

Tell your friends you love them. ❤️

Years ago, we met at a convention in Tennessee. After leaving the convention I ended up stranded in Atlanta. You opened your doors to me and that was a kindness I will never forget.
From ren faires, to Ethiopian food, to visits, and random conversations, I always loved you and Harry.
I wish I could have shown you Alaska. You will be missed dear friend but you left a world that was changed by your kindness and care.

I haven't seen Emily in more than 20 years, but I clearly remember her patience and sweetness. She was also one of the smartest people I knew in school, and from what I've read in this space she only got smarter. As I look at the photo at the top of this announcement I see that same sweet spirit in her smile and in her eyes. Rest in peace, Emily; and I send prayers to all who love and miss her. It is clear from these postings that she was dearly loved.

She truly was everyone's cheerleader and a great addition to all families. And she introduced me to Sushi. How can you treat anyone better than that. Hugs.

I had the honor and privilege of working with Emily and Harry or several years. She was such a mentor to me in that her criticism was always honest and yet she always found a way to help me improve my craft. More than that, as a friend, she pushed me toward my dreams and for all that she did, I believe she made me a better person.  She truly believed in other people and was dedicated to bringing joy to others by helping them make their dreams come true.  You see it in everything she did.

I cannot imagine a looking at my communication panel and not seeing her light on there. I can only offer my heartfelt condolences to Harry, her family, and friends as she walks on toward the Beautiful West .

I met Emily through my husband, Adam Summerville. I later came to know her better through my job at a courier company who worked with the company she was working for at the time. She has always been sweet, sincere, and was always willing to do whatever she could to help those in need. She and Harry both encouraged and helped me to achieve my dream of being a paid writer. She always offered gentle, constructive criticism that helped me to better myself and my craft. She will wholeheartedly be missed and will forever be loved and remembered by myself as someone who saw talent in a woman who didn't believe in herself and helped others to shine brightly. A bright light has been dimmed but will forever shine in the hearts and memories of those who knew her.

I met Emily When harry brought her across country to meet up with family, and they stopped here at our home for a few hours. she was so amazing, sweet and incredibly intelligent that I was able to strike up a friendship with her and stay in touch long distance through social media over the years. She was forever doubting herself and struggling with her journey, but always staying positive and began sharing herself with the rest of us. WE LOVED THAT! She found she truly had a supportive network she could connect with, and all of us will miss her dearly! If I know her, she will still be around us in unseen ways supporting us to be happy and safe, because she loved doing that! So look for things that make you giggle, smile, and laugh, I just bet that is Emily saying hello.

Emily truly made a lasting impact on us all.

I first met Emily through the Society for Creative Anachronisms, just a few years ago. She made a definite impact on my life. I loved how she always seemed to make time for other people and listen to their stories, their concerns, their accomplishments, their ideas... their whatevers. She truly cared and was everyone's personal cheerleader! She always had a smile and a kind word to say, when she saw me and practically everyone else. She made a difference in our lives. Emily pitched in and supported our Shire, at both meetings and events. She was well known for her little quips, excitement for *all* the possibilities, her passion for connecting people, and showing sincere support for everyone else's accomplishments and life's journies. I will never forget her or the way she made me feel. My heart is heavy that she is no longer with us. Our world and our lives are much less, now that Emily has moved on from this life.

You have my sincerest condolences, Harry. I know you are devastated and deeply hurting. But, please know that your friends share at least a tiny bit of that burden with you! Emily is going to be missed very much, by us all. ((Hugs)) and wishes of comfort.

My husband and I met Emily for the 1st time at Meridies 40th Anniversary, I remember she gave me $20 to buy her some seasonings and herbs from Auntie Arwen's tent, when I asked her what kind did she want, she said "Surprise me"!  I did my best to pick out what a total stranger would like.  I hope she was pleased.  After several more conversations over time, she was no longer a stranger but a friend.

Now my husband and I have to have certain Auntie Arwen spices in our cupboards at all times as we use them almost daily.
