This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Gladys Leon. Please feel free to share any photos, stories and anecdotes you may have of Gladys. It would mean a lot and be a great comfort to the family.

Gladys Miguel Leon was born in Port au Prince, Haiti, on Feb 20,1944 to Maria Rousseau and Joseph Miguel. She attended primary school in Cap Haitien. The family then moved to Port au Prince where she attended high school at "Ecole la Sagesse.”  Soon after graduation, she migrated to the U.S. where she lived in New York City and worked for various African embassy delegations to the United Nations.

In 1969, she decided to return to school to study the sciences of Nursing. As a graduate and licensed Registered Nurse, she worked in New York and Florida, which had become her new and last state of residence.

She married Colonel Rene Leon [now deceased]. Both were devoted Haitian patriots. They had two children: Ronald and Thais.
Unfortunately, her health failed due to a long battle with cancer. Supported by loved ones, her courage and faith, she passed away on January 17, 2020 in Seminole, Florida.
She was vibrant, smart, jovial, friendly, spiritual, and compassionate. Always willing to offer advice and a helping hand to parents and friends on circumstances affecting them. She would always tell her adopted niece, “you pray for me and I’ll pray for you.” These markers defined her personality and spirit that will remain with us forever.
As to la Mere Patrie, HAITI, she carried her in her heart. She was deeply concerned about the amount of deadlock challenging politico-socio economic development in her native land.
Gladys is survived by three children: Richard, Ronald, his wife Nadine, and Thais; three grandchildren, Alexis, Logan and Khloe; one great-grandson, Mason; many cousins, nephews, nieces; and an impressive array of friends. She had two brothers: late Eddy and Stelio [Yoyo].
Gladys will be greatly missed. May she Rest in Peace and be our forever Angel.

Dear Gladys, je ne pourrai jamais oublier ta voix au telephone. You are the strongest person that I ever knew, you were so fun to talk to. While I was heartbroken with your illness, but you kept telling me that you were ready, whenever God decides, you were ready. You gave me the courage that I was supposed to give you. Goodbye a toi, we will see in the other world pendant que tu dors en paix dans les bras de Dieu.

Dear Glad,

You left too soon... we still had so much to share.
From the age of 12, carefree and happy adolescent girls, and throughout our adult life, our friendship was solid, built on sincerity and the sharing of the different blows and joys of our lives.

I always knew you were brave, but your bravery reached a peak during your illness, which you wanted to live alone. You did not want to bring this painful reality to any of your children, relatives, and friends. On the contrary, you didn't care, even mocked the sickness; we were baffled.
You said to whoever wanted to hear it: "I'm ready to go if Jesus wants me."

It is fortunate that he took you in your sleep, like a flower carried by a cool breeze.
You will be forever etched in my memory and my heart.

Your friend forever, Maggie L. Prophète

My Auntie Gladys!!

I still pick up the phone to call you, especially when I’m having a bad day! You would always ask me “how is your heart?” She knew how I felt just by the sound of my voice. I didn’t believe she was sick because her voice and laughter spoke life and hope!! She is with my Angels now,and I feel safer knowing that! Happy early Birthday my Queen!!
