My Aunty touched my life at most occasions we met. She continuously admonished me on my life plans, dreams and push for self sustainance. I visited her at home in VI when I had a need to break barriers with the then Delta state Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan. She wrote to the Governor, made calls and gave me clues on how to burst new grounds.
Aunty Grace was exceptionally generous with advice.
Her unique smile is today a memory for me as I ponder over my times with her.
In Warri, I have come across many who still testify that she gave them admission at Uniben. This includes my wife Maureen.
She will be missed and remembered for her good deeds.
I pray her soul rest in God's bosom in Jesus name. Amen.
I am brother of the same mother with Maureen(Money), Golde, Sweete and Chief Dan Awani who happen to be sisters and brother to her.

" Prof Alele Williams is a woman and so are you" , these were the words my father spoke to me as soon as I got into QC!! He said those words every visiting day and everyday he was taking me to school.
Orode I have never met your mom physically but I knew that I had to do well in life.
Those words of my father registered for life!! I am a doctor today .
Her great success as a woman gave me no choice but to succeed. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Dear Orode, I never met your mother - Professor Dr Grace Alele-Williams but I know her and was in awe. Her legacy is unmatchable. Her impact and inspiration continues to inform women and girls, people like 8 year old daughter who after she learned about the fact that she was Professor of Mathematics over 2 years ago, declared your mom her hero and decided that she too can become a mathematician! I wish she had had the chance to meet your mom. Your mom was a trailblazer and icon who paved a way for so many and her legacy will continue to influence untold future generations of women. In your own way too, Orode, you are your mother’s daughter and I am so proud to see your legacy unfold. Love , Kemi Babagbemi

A RARE GEM IS GONE
Prof Chief Grace Awani Alele Williams (Utukpa Iwere)! You are forever in our hearts . For the intervention of Mummy, I would not have been appointed to lecture in Uniben in 1989 after I was found appointable in 1986. But for her intervention again, I would have lost my chance to complete my PhD research work in University of Bristol, England in 1994. I remember how she introduced us female scientists to Third World Academy of Women in Science and she mobilised donors for a number of us young female scientists to go to Johannesburg in 1998 to attend the international Conference of TWOWS. To her credit TWOWS now OWSD, of which she was a one time Vice President (Africa), is waxing strong in Nigeria. She was the first Chairman of the Governing Council, College of Education, Warri and ensured it was affiliated with Uniben to give it a solid point to begin.
Mama was a pillar of strength and encouragement to me. She gave me very useful tips on how to function and succeed as a Chief Executive.
My Sisi Grace, Mummy, Aunty, I miss your calm voice, your push to excel, your counsel. I miss our late night chats in your room in VI. Rest in the Lord my beloved mummy. Adieu!

My aunty, my mentor, one of Awani's finest. I admired you so much and became a mathematician, recently I delved into Applied Mathematics so I could be like you. I promise to become the next female Professor of Applied Mathematics that the Awani family will produce.

Adieu great woman! May God rest your soul

Below is the message that I sent to two of the children of our late Sister:

Mr Williams

Greetings. My name is Charles Omagbanuwaje Awani, the Olori Ebi of the Awani Edo Family of Ajamimogha, Warri.

I learned of the passing on of your beloved mother a couple of days ago. Although she lived to a very ripe age, we all will miss her presence because she meant so much to us. She did our Family proud as a rare gem who blazed like a colossus. She was a luminary of luminaries, exuded strength even as she projected affability. We thank God for a life well spent.

The Family will appreciate it if you carry us along as you decide on obsequies.

I am also sending this message to the Family's Secretariat for them to liaise with you since I am presently not in Nigeria.

Once again, accept our sincere condolences on this irreparable loss.

Prof. Grace Alele-Williams,
You were a role model for not just the women, but for male admirers of excellence. Generations yet unborn will read about you and wish they saw your days.

You stood for excellence, and you achieved it. You didn't stop there, but encouraged others like my very self to do the same. This influence made me to pursue a Ph.D which I obtained after several years of lecturing, and eventually got to the position of professor of accounting.

It is hard to so easily forget your care and concern for your staff welfare of which I am a beneficiary.

May GOD grant your soul eternal rest, and may He also grant your family and well wishers the fortitude to bear your departure.
Adieu, Prof. Grace Alele-Williams!

In life, sometimes there are phenomenal people who you feel you know even though you never meet. People who you admire from afar, trying to glean whatever insights you can from the stories you hear about them to apply to your life so that you can become a greater you.

While I did not have the privilege of meeting Orode’s mother, I felt I knew her. Her brilliance, fearlessness, exuberance and her indomitable spirit were just a few of the traits that were the recurrent themes of Orode’s innumerable stories of her mom over the years. Beautiful in and out, her impact will be celebrated for generations to come. Her infinite love for her children and her society was evident in her words and in her actions.

May her soul rest in perfect peace and may she continue to inspire all of us to be better versions of ourselves. Imo and I are praying for strength for the entire family and thanking God for her wonderful life.

She was well admired and loved by many - who knew her from near or far - as already reflected in the many condolence messages from within the country and beyond, following news of her transition to glory. Evidently she blazed the trail, mentored generations and lived a good life to a ripe old age. So while mourning, I hope the immediate family and others will be comforted by that. Really, I feel that ultimately we should all be grateful for the legacies and celebrate her life.

My father was a proffessor in Uniben. He left us for another woman and expected that the university would throw us out of the university accommodation. Prof Grace Alele Williams said no, that my Mum and us could live there as long as we wanted. He had to find alternative accommodation. Even when he left the university and became an ambassador and people complained she still let us stay. After all my siblings graduated we left voluntarily. Over the years we have prayed for her and remember her with gratitude in our hearts always.
May the path of this wonderful and compassionate woman be joyful and blessed.
Amen

Her Life

Biography

March 26, 2022
Grace Alele-Williams (16 December 1932 – 25 March 2022) was a professor of mathematics education, who made history as the first Nigerian female vice-chancellor at the University of Benin and first Nigerian woman to receive a doctorate.

Early life and education
Alele-Williams was born in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria. She attended Government School, Warri, Queen's College, Lagos and the University College of Ibadan (now University of Ibadan). She obtained a master's degree in mathematics while teaching at Queen's School, Ede in Osun State in 1957 and her PhD degree in mathematics education at the University of Chicago (U.S.) in 1963, thereby making her the first Nigerian woman to be awarded a doctorate. She returned to Nigeria for a couple of years' postdoctoral work at the University of Ibadan before joining the University of Lagos in 1965.

Academic career
Her teaching career started at Queen's School, Ede, Osun State, where she was a mathematics teacher from 1954 to 1957. She left for the University of Vermont to become a graduate assistant and later assistant professor. From 1963 to 1965, Alele-Williams was a postdoctoral research fellow, department (and institute) of education, University of Ibadan from where she was appointed a professor of mathematics at the University of Lagos in 1976.

Her interest in mathematics education was originally sparked by her stay in the US, which coincided with the Sputnik phenomenon. Working with the African Mathematics Program in Newton, Massachusetts, under the leadership of MIT professor Ted Martins, she participated in mathematics workshops held in various African cities from 1963 to 1975. Highlights included writing texts and correspondence courses covering basic concepts in mathematics working in concert with leading mathematicians and educators. She taught at the University of Lagos from 1965 to 1985, and spent a decade directing the institute of education, which introduced innovative non-degree programmes, with many of the certificate recipients older women working as elementary school teachers.

Alele-Williams was appointed the first female vice-chancellor of a Nigerian university in 1985, and she believes her appointment at the University of Benin, which ended in 1992, was a test case to demonstrate a woman's executive capability. Among her honors are Fellow of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria, Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Education, merit award winner of Bendel State in Nigeria, and regional vice-president for Africa of the Third World Organization for Women in Science" (Science in Africa: Women Leading from Strength AAAS, Washington, 1993, p.174). It may be added that professor Alele-Williams was chairman of the African Mathematical Union Commission for Women in Mathematics.

She has held and served in various capacities. By serving in various committees and boards, Alele-Williams had made useful contributions in the development of education in Nigeria. She was chairman of the curriculum review committee, former Bendel State 1973–1979. From 1979 to 1985, she served as chairman of the Lagos State curriculum review committee and Lagos State examinations boards.

Alele-Williams was a member of governing council, UNESCO Institute of Education. She was also a consultant to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Institute of International Education Planning. For a decade (1963–73), she was a member of the African Mathematics Programme, located in Newton, Massachusetts, United States. She was also vice-president of the World Organisation for Early Childhood Education and later president of the Nigeria chapter. In 1974, Alele-Williams published a book titled Modern Mathematics Handbook for Teachers. After serving as the vice-chancellor of the University of Benin, she joined the board of directors of Chevron-Texaco Nigeria. She was also on the board of HIP asset management company limited, an asset management company in Lagos, Nigeria. Alele-Williams was a force to reckon with in the dark period for Nigeria's higher education. Then, the activities of secret cults, confraternities and societies had spread within the Nigerian universities especially in University of Benin. She made valuable impacts, with combination of courage, ingenuity and strategy that the growing tide of cultism was stemmed in the university. A task which many men had failed, she was able to make notable contributions.

She has a special interest in women education. While spending a decade directing the institute of education, she introduced innovative non-degree programmes, allowing older women working as elementary school teachers to receive certificates. Alele-Williams has always demonstrated concern for the access of female African students to scientific and technological subjects.

Alele-Williams was the first president of the African Mathematical Union Commission on Women in Mathematics.

Personal life
Alele-Williams married Babatunde Abraham Williams (b. 1932) December 1963, not long after returning to Nigeria from the United States. Williams was a political scientist who, at the time of their marriage, was a senior lecturer at the University of Ife, Osun State. As of 2017, Alele-Williams had five children and ten grandchildren. She died at age 89.

Awards
Alele-Williams received many awards and honours. She received the Order of the Niger in 1987, and was elected a Fellow of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria and a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Education. She won a merit award of Bendel State in Nigeria, and served as regional vice-president for Africa of the Third World Organization for Women in Science and was chairman of the African Mathematical Union Commission for Women in Mathematics.

On February 28, 2014, she received the centenary award.

10 Things To Consider When Mourning Your Loved One.

April 21, 2022
To Yetunde with the smiling eyes, Ayo, Senior Orode, and my dear friend Jemine.

1. Death takes, but it gives much more. Watch out for life’s many opportunities to be a better you.

2. The passing away of our loved one naturally brings families together, hold on to the togetherness and build on it.

3. Do not argue or fight over the will. (speaking from experience) You’ve already got yours, Mummy’s things are just “jarra”.

4. The process of mourning can be quite sneaky. Take care not to retreat into a place where your ability to give and receive kindness is off balance.

5. Eat well, get plenty of rest & look after yourself. Try to do the positive things that you really love to do.

6. If you have any health issues that has been on the back burner..., NOW is the time to address them.

7. Create a new legacy for Mummy and/or build on the existing one.

8. This is a good age (89 years) to move on to the next life. (Not Christian, this is what we believe death is about). This was a Celebration of Life for Mummy.

9. I can’t shake the feeling that there should be a “Future Library” building/structure in her hometown as part of her legacy. Possibly walking distance from my house in Warri “clears throat”, just like American Presidential libraries.

10. You guys all looked gorgeous. The funeral fashion was on point. I really enjoyed the “banga soup and starch” story (girl after my own heart) and I’m still in awe of the “WAEC by Candlelight” story.

This was a successful event and a massive thank you to the organisers. Sending all of you warm love and best wishes during this time. Igho X

I first heard of Professor Grace Alele-Williams when I was in Secondary School. She was friends with my Principal, Mrs Sulekha Osunde. Mrs Osunde was a Mathematician, and used her friend's story to inspire every student at Igbinedion Education Centre who cared to listen. She escorted me to one of the Award Ceremonies for a National Mathematics Competition, and as though there was something more important than receiving the prize, she said, "I'm inviting my friend, Professor Grace Alele-Williams, to the Graduation Ceremony this year. I will introduce you to her at the Valedictory Service and we will take a picture with her. She's one of the greatest female Mathematicians and Professors!" I never forgot that.

Many years later, I met Dr Orode and was surprised when I learnt she was Professor Alele-Williams' daughter. I excitedly shared my stories from Secondary School with her, and all the wonderful things I had heard about her mum. As we celebrate Mothers' Day today, I think of her family and send my deepest condolences. A mother who leaves such an outstanding legacy will always be honoured and loved. May her noble soul rest in perfect peace with God.
