James Irby “Jack” Carey, 81, passed away Saturday, February 23, 2013 at his home, 100 Maluli Drive, Oxford, NC.

Visitation will be on Monday 25 February, 2013 at Eakes Funeral Home, Oxford, NC from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.  A funeral service will be held on Tuesday 26 February, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Oxford Baptist Church and grave side services will be at 2:30 PM at the Crewe Cemetery, Nottoway County, VA.

Born in Richmond, VA, he was the son of the late Irby and Mabel Carey and was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernell Brooks Carey and his son, James “Jimmy” Douglas Carey and his oldest sister, Christine Glascock.

Mr. Carey is survived by his wife, Jeannette Maynor Carey, his daughter, Susan Carey Frank, husband, Robert, Grandsons, Scott Frank (Tracey), Steve Frank (Shonna), 3 great grandchildren, Step-daughter Felicia H. Robinson (Mark), Deborah H. Reynolds (Phil), four step grandchildren, and four step great grandchildren.  He is also survived by two sisters, Alma Carey, Burkeville, VA and Ruth Lewis, Salem, VA, 2 nieces and 1 nephew.  Every day he showed his love for his family creating a lifetime of memories for each of his loved ones.

Jack retired from Central Carolina Bank as Regional Vice President.  After his retirement from CCB, he formed Granville United Bank which opened in 1990.   Mr. Carey served on numerous banking boards and organizations.  He served two terms as Granville County Commissioner, two terms as Oxford City Commissioner, Burkeville, VA Town Council and Mayor of Burkeville, VA.  He served as chief of the Oxford Auxiliary Police, Chairman of United Way, Chairman of Chamber of Commerce Board, and member of numerous Civic organizations in Oxford.  He was also a member of Kerr Tar Council of Government Loan Committee.  Mr. Carey will long be remembered for his many contributions to his community and his passion to make his community and city a better place.

Jack was a long time member of Oxford Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons and numerous committees of the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oxford Baptist Church Music Department or Oxford Baptist Church Restoration Projects.

Jack Carey served the citizens of Oxford as City Commissioner for 8 years. He was open and honest in his duties to the citizens. He was never afraid to voice his opinion and take a stand for right even though he faced fierce opposition from those who would do harm to the citizens and employees. Jack was my mentor for how a City Commissioner should conduct the cities business.

He will always be remembered by me as a friend who loved his lovely wife Jeanette and his family. Jack was a veteran who served his country with honor. Rest in Peace Brother.

I just read the obits and learned of Jack's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you. He was a fine man. He gave me my first loan to buy a car. Even though I was a single mom he taught me how to do finances and I have learned over the years just what he meant. He will be truly missed. My deepest condolences. Tammy Hicks O'Briant

I wanted to share some encouraging words from the bible. It tells us at Isaiah 25:8 that God will swallow up death forever. John 5:28 and 29 says that those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out. And then it says at Titus 1:2 that God cannot lie. Mankind can and does lie but God cannot. So we will see our loved ones again. What a wonderful hope. Remember how much you loved

I had the good fortune to work with Jeanette and her daughter Debbie Reynolds over the years. My wife, Nancy, and I also had the opportunity to meet Jack a few times after he and Jeanette were married. We always enjoyed being in their ccompany. We would like to express our sympathy to them for this loss.

Jack was a dear friend and advisor that helped many companies through this five county region acquire the financing they needed for their new business. He guided not only our applicants, but our staff and the other members of our review committee, with a stern hand, but with a wonderful sense of humor and fairness that spread to us all.

We met Jack in 1976, Jack worked for Central Carolina Bank. We were buying a farm in Northen Granville County. I requested that CCB finance my loan. It was a Friday and We filled out the necessary paper work. Jack said he would let me know by Monday but i doubted that would happen over the wekend however Jack called us on Monday to say our loan was approved. Great Man, great friend. RIP

Jack gave Joe and I our first loan after we where married. He taught us so much about how to handle finances. Over the years he became a dear friend to us both. He was always there during times of our family lost and sadness. We will miss him dearly. Our taught and sympathy go out to his family; but they can feel comfort in knowing that so many people cared so much for him. Linda and Joe
