Jerome E. Turkel
(1931-2022)

Jerome E. Turkel passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2022. Jerry was a kind and loving man who stood tall, yet remained humble. He was 91 years old.

Jerry was born in Brooklyn, NY to Benjamin and Sadie (née Rosenhand) Turkel, and was the youngest of three children. After graduating from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, Jerry earned his B.S. in Economics from Brooklyn College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before embarking on a long and successful career as an accountant. He headed the New York office of the State of Tennessee Department of Revenue for 31 years. In addition, Jerry prepared income tax returns for numerous clients over several decades.

In 1964, Jerry met his future wife Marlene (née Zollen) at a dance. He was the tallest man there, and she was the tallest woman; they were destined to make a connection. Jerry and Marlene settled in Far Rockaway, NY, where their children Susan and Ben were born. The family moved to East Windsor, NJ in the early 1970s, and stayed for nearly 50 years. Jerry and Marlene lived with their son Ben and his family in West Deptford, NJ, for the last three years of his life.

Some of Jerry's hobbies included reading, following current events, and discussing politics. He also enjoyed going to the gym and volunteering with a local preschool. Jerry will be remembered for his good nature, his love of family, his wise advice, and his sense of humor.

He is survived by his cherished wife of 57 years, Marlene, his children Susan and Ben, his daughter-in-law Kimberly, and his granddaughter Hannah. One of the great joys of Jerry's later years was spending time with his beloved granddaughter, Hannah, who called him Poppy.

Jerry’s family is grateful for the compassionate care he received from Angelic Hospice, West Deptford, NJ. Memorial services will be private. Those who wish to honor Jerry’s memory may donate to the Parkinson's Foundation at www.parkinson.org
