10 years. Doesn't seem possible. I can't believe I have not been able to see you or talk to you in so long. Time may ease the pain but never fills the void.
So much has happened over those years, I hope you were watching - enjoying the good times and praying for us in the bad.
You were such a good man, with such a great heart - we are doing our best to carry on that tradition. You would be so proud of your grandchildren!

We still miss our Pastor Sam Johns at Hosanna Lutheran Church. James was the organist there from about 1989-1993. Not sure when the church closed. We loved him so much and always enjoyed his humor and his personality.

Sorry it's been so long since I posted. Not that I haven't missed you, I'm just not sure what to say. Here we are in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I realized you never saw anything like this. Goes to show how short a human life span is, and how important is it to make good use of the time we have. You sure did! Always thinking of you.

Happy 80th Dad! Wish you were here - would have been fun to get all 80 candles on the candle and lit!

It's been quite a year - hopefully you enjoyed it from afar!

Happy belated birthday Dad! It's not that I forgot, but I did not put anything on here, just Facebook... sorry.

So I went downtown in front of the Majestic Theater and cleaned your brick! It was very dirty - you should take better care of it :)

Thinking of you always!

Four years. Hard to believe so much time can go by without someone you thought you could never live without. Odd how the memories start to fade - even though you don't want them to. I will always remember you - you were such a fantastic person - I still aspire to become as good a man as you. Love you Dad!

Sam was such a good man. All of the family enjoyed Sam. It does not seem 3 years since we lost him. Hope you all think of him in the good way and remember how wonderful he was.

Happy Birthday Sam, you and all the family in Heaven can celebrate your day as we here on Earth remember you. I last saw you when we buried Aunt Berdine in Texas and I posted a couple of pictures from that day.

Carol and family,
Next to my father, among all the other pastors I know, Sam was my number one role model for ministry. The year I had the privilege to intern under him in Pennsylvania was a true blessing. He taught me much about pastoring, and modelled grace, love and integrity. I regret not keeping in touch. Love and peace to you all. Doug Kranz

Carol and family,
Jimmy and I were very saddened to hear of Sam's passing. He was such a great friend and an amazing pastor. We enjoyed our time at Hosanna so much! It was so funny how we arrived at Hosanna on the very day the organist was leaving to return to school.. and Jimmy was looking for a job as organist since we had just arrived in SA!

I will always remember all the awesome Thanksgiving feasts at Gina's, where we would meet up with Sam and Carol's wonderful family. Two great families coming together, "breaking bread". We could count on Sam's lively conversation, and we could count on him to give a spiritual "blessing" for the abundance of food that everybody had brought! I will very much miss my friend, Sam.

I remember the day I met Sam. I felt a kinship immediately & he gave me a hug. I had just started dating Stephen's father-in-law. I commented over supper that he looked so familiar... Come to find out I had known his sister, Ann, for years at my previous job with Dr.Quigley. An ahh-haa moment for me. I felt his presence with us the day after he passed. He will be missed so much. Robin

Dear Carol, Aaron, Greg, and Stephen,
Word of Sam's passing made it across the Pacific to the Garden Isle. When I heard wonderful memories of Rural Valley came flooding back! I was blessed to have him as an intern supervisor, and for the last 33 years my ministry has continued to be shaped by him.

So sad to hear of Sam's passing. I have such great memories when the John's family were at Saint Paul's in Coudersport. I think back often when I met you in SanAntonio when I was there for Trienniel. I laugh when I remember coming home from work and kept hearing someone call "Donna" and could not see anyone and then Sam appeared from along the river waiting until I got home from work.

Carol, Stephen, Greg and Aaron, I am so sorry for your loss. Sam was a great guy who loved to call me and do the Howdy from Texas greeting. I was so thankful for him being there for us when we buried Aunt Berdine and Rick and I were talking about his wedding and Sam being the one who did the service. I could go on with all the memories but I will stop. Love to you all. Vickie & Don

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
Although I never had the pleasure of knowing Sam we are all part of the same family and as such I share in your sadness over his passing. I know he will be greatly missed, but take comfort in knowing that he's with God now.

Carol and family:

We were very sorry to hear about Sam's passing. Please know that all of you are in our thoughts and prayers. Sam was always there when any of the family needed him. When Deb and I were married Sam was our co-minister. Deepest sympathy. Ernie

Please add what you can to this memorial. I am sure I don't know half the people who consider him a friend and would love to hear from them.

Trout fishing in April In Pennsylvania

April 6, 2015

We are just a couple days away from opening day of trout season in PA.

My dad would never miss this.  I have vivid memories of getting up before the sun to the buzz of an old, white alarm clock that flipped the numbers, packing up the fisihing gear, and heading off.

We would always fish under this one rail-roal tressle (which I have a picture of and a railroad spike from in my house).  I remember being so cold, but dad was always so excited and had so much fun.  I remember, much to his pain, getting my line caught in trees/bushes a few too many times.

Those where the moments that as I kids you would roll your eyes, but later you come to realze just how important they were. Simple quality time, no agenda, no rush, just being together and sharing an experience.

Sled

April 14, 2012

My parents were pulling me in this sled and after awhile thought it seemed light.

It was - I had fallen out and was head first in a snow drift.

I was quickly rescued.

I still have the sled.
