I met Joe through our children, and though I only knew him for just over a year, he had become a very special friend. We shared many a moment at the school gate or in the car park (Joe was always first to arrive and secure the best parking space). Infact I used to arrive early for school too, as I so enjoyed our time to chat and Clemmie and Chomba'a time to play hide and seek. Joe's smile always brightened my day, it sent me off to work with a positive spring in my step.

Joe was such a special man. His love of life and laughter were infectious. He was a wonderful role model and Chomba is a testament to that.

My love and prayers are with Janet and Chomba. Joe's light will always shine bright and I know he will be watching over us with a glint in his eye and a smile on his face.

Rest in peace my dear friend who was taken too soon. Xxx

Joe was our dear friend at the school gate, always welcoming and friendly and the voice of calm in our hectic lives. He was first at the gate to collect Chomba and it was a pleasure to see Chomba run into his arms at the end of each day. We were also lucky enough to spend time with Joe watching Chomba and Sam play rugby on a Saturday morning where Joe would always make us laugh no matter what the weather was like or how muddy the boys got.
Joe’s wonderful nature shines through in Chomba who really is the little light of the class, caring for all the other children and with a huge smile on his face at all times.
Joe was taken from us too soon and his loss has left a huge hole in in so many hearts. It was a privilege to know you Joe, we miss you deeply already but know that you are watching over us all and will always remain in our hearts.

I met Joe in September 2015 when our children started school together. I wasn't working at the time and my days revolved around drop off and pick up, as did Joe's. So we saw each other plenty and nods of the head in the early weeks developed into much longer and funnier conversations as we got to know each other better. He was a school 'mum', one of us. At ease with both the mums and the dads and absolutely devoted to Chomba. I got to know Joe better on a parenting course which the school ran on a Monday night where we managed to escape the day and drink free red wine and talk about the trials and tribulations of parenting 3/4 year olds.

I will always remember Joe, his black gilet, beanie hat and smile.

We'll miss you Joe xx

A polite, witty, thoughtful and very supportive friend and colleague!

Well – that is who Chomba will always be to me.

We talked a lot. Bounced many ideas off each other and even at times laughed at some funny moments in our past and even at times managed to surprisingly get introduced to each other.

Chomba has always had the gift of imparting his wisdom without imposing himself. He has always been that person one knows they can talk to about issues in confidence. I will miss our long phone calls, his ever infectious laughter and his obvious pride and solid commitment to his family and friends too.

May God bless and give his family and loved ones peace and strength as we all celebrate the gift of our mutual experiences and moments with Chomba.

I have known uncle Joe for as long as I can remember. An addition to the family that seemed like the missing link we never noticed was even missing. Always able to make you laugh even when you didn't want to! Definitely a dad that loved his son with all his heart. One of the most dedicated parents I know. But more a loving husband. The thing about Joe is I always thought he was an angel who managed to pass for a human being here on earth. It was probably true. Joe couldn't walk into your life and leave you the same. He would leave laughter, a smile but more wisdom. He always knew what to say and when. You will be missed. But more your memory will be treasured. Much love.

I knew Joe in 1981. But we didn't call him Joe. To us he was Chomba. Chomba was my room mate in Kagumo for four years and my friend throughout secondary school. We came from totally diverse family and social backgrounds but Chomba got along with everyone and we struck a very solid friendship.  We kept in touch when he worked in Mombasa and when he went to London. I never saw him sad one day in his life and I remember him for his never ending humour and laughter. We were age mates, almost born the same day, my birthday being 4th August 1967. I have lost one of my oldest friends and a true brother.

Joe and I became friends through our children. Our boys are best friends at school, and I have never seen them falling out - mostly because of Chomba’s kind and peaceful nature that always finds a clever and positive way to turn difficult situations around. While sitting and observing Chomba and Nico, Joe and I shared stories, reflected on our children’s happiness, and spoke a lot about life in general - and Joe was so full of it! It did not take long for me to realise that Chomba’s approach to play was a direct reflection of Joe’s approach to life; they were very much in tune with one another.

Joe was an incredible man and father, and I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to actually express my admiration for him in person. His departure was premature, challenging our understanding of life itself. But we remain, and the people who Joe loved the most are the ones that we need to care for right now. May his legacy of kindness and love be multiplied amongst us, and directed towards his family.

God bless you all!
