6/1/2013: Eulogy by Derick & Patrick Wilson

Joyce Veronica Wilson: Born Joyce Veronica McKenzie

Other wise know as Joyce, Joycee, Jice, Mama Joyce, Grand Ma, or as Derick and I called her Ma

Joyce is the daughter of Alan Alfonso Mckenzie and Lelia Baldi

Sister to Kenneth Anthony, Silvia, and Pearl

Joyce came into this world on October 25, 1939 in Kingston, Jamaica at Jubilee Hospital

She spent her early childhood in Savlamar, Jamaica with her mother

She then returned back to Kingston, specifically 36 Rouseau Road where she attended Rousseau Primary school and Half Way Elementary School.

Upon complete her high school she wanted to go to nursing school but alas her path laid elsewhere. Joyce began an apprenticeship with the late Cislyn Daley as a Hair Dresser where developed a loyal following from the nurses at St Andrews hospital

In 1962, her eye caught sight of a scrawny, bowlegged bashful man, by the name Errol Wilson at her father’s bar.

On February 27, 1965 Joyce married Errol and in May that year they had their first child, Patrick Anthony. Obviously there was a time anomaly which allowed for the 9 month pregnancy to happen in 3months.

1 yr 7mo 8 days later Joyce gave birth to their second son Derick Dean.

Shortly after Joyce Immigrated to Canada on a sponsorship as a caregiver/nanny in order to provide a better life for her two boys. This came at great sacrifice, as she had to leave her new family behind until she could secure the proper papers.

In December of 1969 Joyce’s family joined her in Canada were they began a new life together.

Joyce worked at several manufacturing jobs in which she excelled to the top of her position at each one. Notably, of these jobs was Air King where she worked some 20 + years before she retired at the young age of 65. Some would say she was greater than the CEO.

Joyce’s life was for her 2 boys. She often said “ them two boys, I would do anything for or to protect them”. She loved to attend their hockey games and school performances and as a result learned how to drive in order to get them where they needed to go. A true Hockey Mom

On Feb 13, 1993 her son, Derick got married to Andrea Wright and union produced Joyce 3 granddaughters, Akailah.  Adaijah, and Alaiyah.  Her granddaughters quickly became the joy of her life, so much for the sons.

She easily transitioned from Hockey Mom to Sccocer/Ringet/…. GrandMa.

Joyce also spent quite a bit of her time devoting her time and energy to her church and their services. As a devote Christian she believed in helping others help themselves and find themselves. If their was someone needing help you would always find Joyce willing to help

One of Joyce’s biggest accomplishments at work and in life was her ability to make long lasting friends and to make everyone feel welcome and loved. You all are a testament to that.

On May 17th, 2013 Joyce Wilson lost her 16 month battle to cancer. She is survived by her husband Errol, Sons Patrick and Derick, her sister Sylvia, her brother Ken, her grandchildren Akailah, Adaijah, and  Alaiyah, Nieces Paulette and Sandra, Nephews Delroy and Devon, Step daughter Dawn and Step son Earl, and lots of other relatives and friends.

As she loved us all we loved her and will miss her dearly. Sleep on Joyce and rest in Peace.
