ForeverMissed

It is with great sadness that we are sharing today that Karen Gilliam has passed away. She was admitted to hospital shortly before Christmas and sadly lost her valiant battle with her illness last night.
In addition to her direct family and friends, many in the WildEarth family will know Karen as she has been an integral part of WildEarth since the very beginning. Her dedication to Wildearth and, especially, the WildEarth community was second to none; she lived and breathed WildEarth like no one else. As the WildEarth family is a global and online one, we've created this central place to allow everyone to offer their condolences, or share a thought or story.
As we deal with this loss and wonder how to fill the gap she's leaving, our thoughts are also with her family, friends, and loved ones.
If you would like to share a memory, or leave a message or condolence, please do so. No doubt her family and friends will find some solace in seeing what she meant and did for so many in the WildEarth family around the world.
Please keep Karen and her family in your thoughts.
Karen's family has created a GoFundMe campaign to help with the service and arrangement costs here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/karen-j-gilliam
Her memorial service will be held on February 4th, at 2 PM EST. More details will be shared once they become available.
More info on the memorial and an obituary can be found here:

My condolences to Karen’s family and close friends. Karen was our absolute WE champion! Her amazing knowledge, past and present, of our beloved characters and remarkable sightings, the vids collections, helping to resolve any tech issues or questions, making sure chat stays fair and fun…these are are just the bits I know about. It was clear Karen’s heart was with WE and the wildlife. Rest in peace and know you are tremendously missed … may your soul be surrounded by the African wildlife forever! Thank you, Karen!

I am incredibly sad to hear about Karen's passing. I missed this information and just became aware during a search of the Wild Earth website.

WE has become such an integral part of my life. I found it during COVID and never turned back. During this time, Karen helped me on more than one occasion when I had any problems with the website. My impatience never impacted her professionalism and kindness and ultimately finding a solution to my problem. This was also seen when Karen acted as the mod on the daily safaris.

Rest in peace dear lover of our natural world.

My deepest condolences to Karen's family at this most difficult time. Karen was a true friend and colleague, always willing to help out or lend an ear where needed. She was passionate about WildEarth and Africa and dedicated herself to helping bring Africa and nature to the many viewers around the world. Anyone could contact her and she would take her can-do attitude and find a way to make it happen, such a special gift.
She will be greatly missed by one and all and we will do our best to live up to her expectations and continue the good fight.
Rest Easy Karen, thank you for everything. We will make you proud.

First and foremost, my condolences to Karen's family and friends. Thoughts and prayers to you all in this very difficult time. Our WE family has lost the biggest piece to our puzzle. Our hearts ache, our minds are scrambled. We all know you want us to go on and be the best we can be. You know the Mod's and Zoomies you framed us all into. We will do our best to make you proud, we all know you are not far (you never were). And YES, I'll still raise my hand and say "I did that" Karen (sorry trouble follows me). And yet you treated me (us) with the utmost respect. Fly high our angel, you are truly missed!!! RIP Karen, we've got it from here.

Karen will be sadly missed. She brought me from the eagle cams to Djuma and I never looked back. She was stern as a mod but she was always fair. My heart is with the family today. We have lost a great soul and no words can be said to fill or replace her ever. Her family should be proud of all her efforts and the welcomes she gave to new people. Now she is in peace and smiling at us all. Thank you Karen glad you were my teacher.(eaglesprey)

i offer my prayers for comfort at the unreplaceable loss we experience when a loved one or a friend inevitably passes away from our current reach. I selfishly appreciated Karen for all her dedication and labor of love she contributed that made it possible for me to also enjoy what Karen valued so much., the amazing beauty of God's creation in Nature and our human responsibility to value it all and to preserve it, by her untiring work to make the WildEarth community a welcome privilege for all to benefit from... For people around the entire planet.
That is quite a significant contribution and legacy by which Karen will always be remembered.

I grew up thinking that Karen was my actual aunt. Her and my deceased Dad Robbie Williams were life long friends. Karen has always been a part of our family and my heart breaks that I wont get a message or a phone call from her anymore telling me to take a yellow and purple chill pill! Rest easy Aunt Karen, I know Dad and Momma Dixie was there to meet you so you could join the party. Until we meet again...

I don’t know how to start … this is just so sad. Karen taught the chatters a lot about the lineage of all the animals, she had an extremely sharp memory that way. We loved it when Karen would get into a silly mood in the dam cam chat - she had lots of wit and would joke about scenarios of where the animals were when the dam was quiet. She stopped us from strangling each other and was quick to defuse online bickers with simple logic … and I would like to think she taught a lot of people about being respectful to each other and online manners.
The passion this woman had for Wild Earth was second to none. She worked extremely hard because she believed in the mission. I can’t imagine the loss Emily, Graham and the entire WE crew past and present, are feeling right now. I am so sorry to her family for losing their precious Karen. Sending love to everyone who knew her.

I looked forward to chatting with you again in the future, but now with great sadness, that won't be. Rest in peace dear friend I hope you are with our favourite leopards now passed. My heart goes out to your family, many friends, colleagues and all the viewers of WE and especially the dam cam. We will all miss you greatly. The bark still remains, the branches and leaves still wave in the breeze, but our beloved tree which graced all of WildEarth and Djuma is hollow.
Karen has been our Tree of Knowledge for so many years it will be easy to agree that no one will be able to wear her shoes quite as masterfully as she.
Yet, as a hollow tree becomes new habitat for new life the knowledge she so graciously shared can be encouraged forward for all nature enthusiasts!
Blessings to her family, closest friends and for all whom she touched. She will be deeply missed by more than she ever knew! Thank you Karen!

Her Life

Karen and WildEarth

Many in the WildEarth family will know Karen as she has been an integral part of WildEarth since the very beginning. Her dedication to Wildearth and, especially, the WildEarth community was second to none; she lived and breathed WildEarth like no one else I know. She would often mention the intricate set up she created at home with multiple PCs and screens so she could keep an eye on everything. Be it leading the zoomie and moderation teams, monitoring our social media, recording the histories or lions and leopards, or helping people through our support system; nothing was ever too much. If anything, it seems she was frequently looking to take on even more!
James Hendry, our Head of Naturalists says: ‘Karen had a knowledge and love of our WildEarth characters like no-one else. Not only that, but her willingness and desire to share this passion was always a wonder. She worked tirelessly to create and maintain a database of our characters which will continue to be helpful to us for years to come.Africa’s wildlife lost a passionate champion last night and we are going to sorely miss Karen’s generosity of spirit. . We will remember her fondly and with enormous gratitude.’
As we deal with this loss and wonder how to fill the gap she's leaving, our thoughts are also with her family, friends, and loved ones.
Please keep Karen and her family in your thoughts.
