This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Matt Adams. We will remember him forever.

Matthew Christen Adams, Matt, 56, unexpectedly passed away on Friday, November 27, 2020, at his home in Dunwoody, Georgia.  He was born on February 22, 1964, in Massena, New York.

Mr. Adams was the founder and President of FM², a facilities engineering and management consulting firm he established in 1995. He helped more than 200 schools and nonprofit organizations gain more than $600 million for facility renewal.  Matt was very humble about his professional career but was a leader in his industry.  He published numerous articles and books and was a frequent speaker for APPA - Leadership in Educational Facilities and many other professional associations (please see his full professional biography under “Life”).

Mr. Adams was very active and enjoyed many sports, including golf and water sports.  He was an avid skier all his life.  He joined the Cataloochee Resort Ski Patrol (120 members dedicated to promoting safety, providing emergency care and transport, free of charge) in the Fall of 2010.  As his skiing and first aid skills improved, he quickly advanced from a Basic Patroller to a Sr. Patroller and was currently working toward Certified, National Ski Patrol’s (NSP) highest level of accreditation. While working on his skiing and first aid skills, he also completed NSP instructor courses.  As an instructor for Outdoor Emergency Care, Toboggan, and Instructor Development, he encouraged and assisted fellow patrollers in advancing their knowledge and skills.  To this goal, Matt was serving as Dixie Region Senior Program Advisor.  Mr. Adams was also a terrific leader who had served as Assistant Team Lead, Assistant Patrol Rep. and was currently serving as Cataloochee Ski Patrol Representative to the Southern Division of the National Ski Patrol.

Mr. Adam was an advocate for the Boy Scouts organization earning the recognition of Eagle Scout as a young man.

Mr. Adams was an active member of Dunwoody Country Club where he enjoyed spending time with fellow members, was an active golfer, swimmer and served as a member of the board of governors.

Even though Matt enjoyed his work, skiing, and golf, his main passion was being Nick’s Dad.   You could never spend any time with Matt without hearing him talk about his son Nick.  He was one of the proudest Dads you would ever meet.  His favorite pastime was going on the many vacations they took together.

To Matt’s friends and family, we will miss his ever-present smile, his amazing sense of humor, his generosity, his listening ear, his tremendous grace, his love of country, his friendship, and most of all, we will miss our friend Matt.

He was very generous with his time and volunteered and organized events for various nonprofit organizations.  Matt also started a nonprofit organization that advocated for the rights of single Dads.

Mr. Adams graduated in 1986 with a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was President (Consul) of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He was a member of Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering Advisory Board and was named to the Academy of Outstanding Engineers in Georgia.

Matt graduated from Bradshaw High School in Florence, AL, in 1982.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Beverly Welsh Adams, his son Nicholas Adams, and his uncle, Jerry Welsh. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. William J. Adams.

I got to know Matt through committee and then later via Board work at Dunwoody Country Club. He was undoubtably one of the most thoughtful and intelligent people that I have had the privilege to have served with. I will miss seeing his infectious smile around our clubhouse. Peace be with you Matt and prayers for your family.

I met Matt this past summer at DCC as he swam with the DCC Masters, as I coached. He was so sincere, humble, kind and generous, and in that period of short time, he made an impression on me. We not only connected thru swimming but also thru skiing, Cataloochee Resort in NC, scouts, and teaching. He was a wonderful stand up guy. I am deeply saddened by his passing. He was taken too soon, and we will all miss his wonderful smile around the pool deck next summer. My sincerest condolences to all of his family.

I met Matt through husband Joe. We crossed paths several times at various official events, but the one I remember most was the time he and his parents invited our entire family to the "lake house". Our son and daughter were teenagers at the time, but Matt treated them as adults. He asked them each about their lives and what was important to them. As a mother, I appreciated that he cared about my "children" and was impressed that they had such a good time even though they weren't with their friends.

I met Matt when I was new to Georgia State University and he was at ISIS back in 1990. He was so full of energy and good ideas, and helped me learn about higher education. He visited my house once, and based on the wildlife in my backyard we dreamed about making bird feeders that would fool squirrels - flinging them off of course. Of course we played many rounds of golf over the years, the last at his club a couple of years ago. We met up at many GAPPA, SRAPPA and APPA meetings. I remember one dinner at APPA in Boston when he tried to buy a live lobster to set it free; didn't work but he tried. At another dinner we dreamed about an APPA manual to set maintenance staffing levels - that did happen. I last saw Matt over dinner in Atlanta in 2018; we talked about old friends and of course that latest on his son's progress. He did love his son so much. Matt will be greatly missed!

So saddened to hear about Matt. We had not spoken for a few years and I was shocked to hear the sad news. Matt and I spent some great times on the golf course and on the phone discussing our kids. We were both single dads and had many long conversations about how to be the best dads we could be. I know he was very excited and passionate about being the best role model he could be.

I will miss my workout friend. I was hopeful we would get to do a ski run this year!
Matt always had a smile on his face. He would light up when speaking about his son Nick, and was so proud of him. He thoroughly enjoyed skiing and being outdoors.
Matt's smile was infectious and I will miss him! <3

Matt you left us way too soon. So many great memories of the many years golfing and skiing together. Thanks for being the one to get me involved with Cataloochee Ski Patrol. I will always be thinking of you when up there! I will forever miss your laugh! Nick & Bev, I am so sad for your loss. Know that we are all here for you and ready to help! Be strong and know what a great man your father/son was and how many people he positively impacted while he was here with us on earth.

I have worked for Matt for about 8 or so years . I got to know Matt just before his dad passed away. Matt and I became good friends and when I would come by his house he would not have it any other way than have me come in and sit at his table and just talk. We would talk about everything from his properties to his skiing trips and, of course, his son. He always made me feel like I was an important part of his life and would always thank me for my help and friendship.

Mrs. Adams, Bev, I know the hurt in your heart right now from the loss of 2 of my sons. I am so sorry for your loss. You and your husband raised a good man. I will surely miss Matt in my life.

Our first meeting of Matt Adams was through his mom Bev. We met on a number of social occasions, one of which was at the Dunwoody Country Club. As new immigrants from South Africa, he was genuinely interested in getting to know who we were and where we came from. He oozed warmth, generosity and sincerity by opening his house up and hosting my US Citizenship party 5 years later.
He is instrumental in making Nicky the confident young man he is today.
Matt was a genuine "mensch", loving father and friend who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Even though I had only recently gotten to know Matt, the short time I had with him greatly impacted me. His empathy, humility, kindness, and ability to truly listen was extremely admirable. His time among us seems far too short. I believe he had much more he wanted to give and share with his friends and family ... I know he cared greatly for all of them. God’s plan is not always easy for us to understand, and I pray for all of us who are grieving his passing.
