CADILLAC — It is with heavy hearts that the family of Michael Grant Townsend announce his passing on Thursday, April 3. 2014, at age 64. Mike bravely faced his diagnosis of metastatic melanoma with quiet resolve.

Mike was preceded in his death by his father, C.G. Townsend. Mike leaves behind his mother, Mary; brother, Jeff; sister, Julie (husband Jack Fady); children (grandchildren): Joshua (Maddox), Kristen (Jordan), and their significant others.

Mike lived his life in a reserved and humble manner and made an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew him, known for his extraordinary kindness, sense of humor and humility.

Michael was born in Cadillac, graduated from Cadillac High School and attended Ferris State. He served our country in the U.S. Navy, in-country in Vietnam from 1970 to 1972 and six years active Naval Reserve.

Mike returned to Cadillac and the Cadillac Printing Company, which he eventually co-owned and managed. He was well-liked and loved by his employees and clients alike.

Mike was committed to Cadillac’s future for he served as a valued board member for Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau. He also held a board position at Cadillac Country Club, where he had long held membership.

Mike’s real passion was spending his days on the water fishing. We know he is now fishing the rivers of heaven that are filled with healing waters (also steelhead and trout).

Donations in Mike’s memory can be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation as every hour of each day someone will die from this disease.

A celebration of his life will be held in May.

A life Well Lived

Please join me in sharing your stories, tributes and memories of a great man I am proud to call my brother. I spent much of this past year growing closer to Mike as I joined him on much of his journey once diagnosed with Metastatic Melanoma.

Thru Mike's journey I have learned so much. Life is a test and nothing is insignificant in your life even the smallest indicent has significace for your character. Mike displayed such a growth opportunity for me as I recognized the real strength of his character. My life will be so much richer and in the moment with all I have gained from this experience. Mike so bravely faced his challenges with this disease as he faced his death. He was at peace and not afraid as he knew he had a beautiful journey ahead.

A man is a success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much.
