A Time To Be Born

Mrs. Slemon Davis Hightower was born March 24, 1919 in Salem, Alabama to the late John and Sallie Alderidge Davis.

A Time To Worship

She confessed Christ at an early age at the Mountain Springs Baptist Church in Salem, Alabama, under the pastorate of Rev. Wright. “Tump”, as she was affectionately called, served as a Sunday School Teacher, Missionary, Usher, Choir Member, Deaconess and Church Custodian. Upon relocating to Hampton, Virginia, she joined New Grafton Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. Michael L. Sumler and later united with First Baptist Church Jefferson Park under the pastorate of Dr. Reginald C. Woodhouse. Regardless of where she worshipped, “The Mountain” was always her church and Rev. Rampey, who called her frequently, was always her Pastor.

A Time To Love

She was united in holy matrimony to the late Deacon Frank Hightower. To this union, one child was born – Lucille Hightower Winston (Roosevelt) – who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Eric L. Winston, her siblings and one great-great-granddaughter, Jazmyn. Although only blessed with one child, Slemon loved children and children just seemed to gravitate to her. No one called her by her name; she was either “Tump” or “Granny”. She was a die-hard Atlanta Braves fan and a very competitive domino player. She loved everyone, but loved Jesus most.

A Time To Work

Slemon served her community by serving as a member of the Fairfax Civic Club, a member of the Community Improvement and Street Naming Committee and the Rehoboth Heights Community Action Committee. She was employed with Head Start and later retired from West Point Pepperell.
