We are sorry to announce that Niall Kirkpatrick was tragically killed today in a road traffic accident. He was cycling, and was hit by a car.
He was an exceptional man and a great doctor. He has influenced and trained many colleagues over the years and was very very active in BAPRAS.
Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time, and there will be a virtual book of condolence for those who would like to share their thoughts and feelings.
He will be greatly missed.

Niall, I’m utterly devastated to hear that you are gone. You were a mentor to me and hugely influential in my chosen career, but more than that, I considered you a friend. A supremely talented surgeon and a generous, warm-hearted, gentleman. Plastic surgery has lost one of its finest. May your legacy live on in your family, to whom my heartfelt condolences go out, and in the many, like myself, who you have inspired. Rest in peace.

I am stunned to learn of this news. A gentleman in every way, Niall was an outstanding leader and individual. Talented in his chosen craft and giving back to those in need. Always made time to go out of his way to offer a helping hand. Dr. Niall touched the lives of many and in particular those in underserved Vietnam and Africa. It has been an honor to serve alongside of you through the Facing The World Charity Foundation. May you rest in peace.

Dearest Niall - Your kindness touched so many people and we are all in shock and numb at the devastating news. The world is a much darker place without you and has left a void that can never be filled. I was lucky enough to know and work in the same practice as you many years ago - once met, never forgotten. I remember how you gave your time so freely and welcomed a young boy from Facing the World (who shared his birthday with one of your sons) to join in the party. This child was over in the UK for facial surgery and had never had a birthday party.  I remember how you would buy all the staff lunch on a Friday because the practice was so busy and we didn't have time to take a lunch break. I remember how generous you were not only with money but with your time. A beautiful person both inside and out. I send strength, courage and love to your family, friends, patients and colleagues who I know will all be heartbroken at losing you. Rest in peace Niall xxx

What a tragedy and loss. Niall was an outstanding senior registrar at GOS and it was wonderful that he returned recently. He also made a big contribution to BAPRAS. He was a warm and charming man who has clearly been a big influence on many people. He will not be forgotten. Brian Sommerlad

Unbelievably sad and tragic to hear of Niall’s untimely passing. We were contemporaries during training and appointed consultants at the same time. He was always uniquely talented surgically which stayed with him during his consultant career but equally his personal qualities of warmth, kindness and generosity of spirit shone as a beacon to us all. He will leave an indelible mark on Plastic Surgery and on all those whose lives he touched. Heartfelt condolences to Anahita and the boys. May you rest in peace Niall.

Niall was truly inspirational. He was my registrar at Charing Cross, and together with David Floyd, we were a close knit bunch, getting through the challenges of life. I remember the celebrations, when the boys got their exams, at “Floydy’s private club”! Throughout my career he has been an incredible mentor and friend. He was delighted when I got my consultant post at EG. As already mentioned, this rarest of gentlemen; with his compassion, humility and incredible talent; has touched our hearts and made us better human beings. We have all been so privileged to have him in our lives. Heartfelt condolences to Anahita and the family. May you rest in peace, Niall.

I had the great pleasure of being Niall’s last NHS registrar. Initially I thought someone couldn’t be as kind, thoughtful, humble and friendly whilst simultaneously being one of the most talented surgeons I have ever worked with - but he was. He was an inspiration then, and years later as a consultant I strive to be as compassionate to my patients as he was with his. Niall’s passing is a massive loss to the plastic surgery world, but not nearly as much as the hole left in his family’s lives. I hope they know how much of an inspiration he was to those he work with, and how proudly he spoke about his children. May you rest in peace Niall

Such a very tragic loss. I met Niall when we were both at GOS for 6 months. We shared an office on the old Tiger Ward, many years ago. He was always thoughtful, smiling and gentle; and highly qualified (one of the few dentally qualified plastic surgeons). His genuine care for his patients was obvious and was reflected in the smiling faces of the children as they interacted with him.
Niall you will be hugely missed.
Heartfelt condolences to Anahita and all your family.

We grew up together as trainees and contemporaries sharing dreams and facing the same challenges. As with many of us we never saw enough of each other. Such terribly sad, tragic and shocking news about one of the most talented surgeons of his generation. Niall, studied Dentistry before Medicine, and so our paths crossed at many points in training and beyond. Generous in spirit and always willing to help in any way he could. His patients adored him and realised they were fortunate to be under his care. Heartfelt condolences and thoughts are with Niall’s family.
God bless

I met Mr Niall Kirkpatrick four times in my life and each time I was greeted with not only professionalism but warmth, and kindness too.

I was going through a very bad time due to a painful and unsuccessful cosmetic treatment elsewhere, and unlike many other surgeons I met, he showed understanding and most of all genuine empathy for my situation. He has always stood out to me as one of the last genuine and caring surgeons who seemed concerned for every aspect of my well-being. He was so much more than a surgeon.

Today is a sad day not only for the world of medicine, but for humanity as a whole. He was the last of a rare breed and the world has lost a very special human being in Mr Kirkpatrick. My condolences to those who were lucky enough to have his continuous presence in their lives. You are in my thoughts.

A truly inspirational man.

I first met Niall when I was a medical student and I undertook a 3 week special study module in plastics. This allowed me to shadow both his nhs and private practice. We found a shared love of music and art as we talked as he operated. He was so welcoming, humble, honest and really gave me the confidence to follow my dream. I doubt he would remember me, but having recently become a Plastics Consultant myself, I really wanted to thank him. I’m so sorry I will never get that opportunity. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very hard time.

Unbelievable and am shocked

I just found out about your passing. We communicated just last year and you had told me to pop into your office for a catch up after Covid was over. Little did I know that was the last time we would have spoken. I am devastated to say the least! I have know you for more than 20 years. You had performed 7surgeries on me and each and every time your smile and demeanour put me at ease. You changed my life more than I can say. I am in utter shock. I will truly miss you. They say God takes the good ones first. HE isn't wrong. I pray you are resting in peace-can just see you smiling over all of us. My heartfelt condolences to his wife and children. Such an extraordinary man-gone way too soon.

"Oh I don't imagine I will do much more than suck soup threw a straw post surgery" He put his head down on the desk between his hands and howled with laughter....and I saw the man. I would watch him practically danceing into reception.....and I saw his passion. He got to see me post surg at 3 months ....but not what he helped me achieve at 6 months.....this breaks my heart.....Dear Niall please please don't ever be too far away from us all because you clearly will never be forgotten.I wish you love and a safe new journey. Niall was just a lovely colleague with a great smile and a twinkle in his eye.  One of the very best trainees we had in the early years at the Charing Cross who exemplified the saying "if you wanted a job done give it to a busy person".

Niall informed me that both he and his brother had both managed to be expelled from Wellington School (a great plus in my eyes!) and also that Roy Orbison had the widest range of singing voice of any pop star, so we played his CD ad infinitum when operating together.

During his stay with us one of his family had a very serious illness and he bravely took unpaid leave of absence to care.  This was a very difficult decision decisively taken by a very caring man.  Personally I also owe him great gratitude that when my wife was ill in The Marsden he took time out to console me.

"The best often go first" is a truism.  This is a very great sad and tragic loss not only to Anhita and family but to us all.  My sincerest condolences.  Dai Davies
p.s. I very much hope that BAPRAS, given the pages of condolences, a fund will be set up to commemorate Niall's great standing
